BRASSO
The continuing licensing issue will even more accelerate the importance of the Visual Design ( and Guards ) to Corps scores & placements. With the show Music expected to come increasingly from self written music, the music will not be highlighted, the Visuals will. Plus, it sure will make things much easier for fans in the offseason when we inquire to find out the music inspiration to be drawn upon by all the Corps for the next season's show and they all read simply 2 words.......: " Original Compositions ". I want this to be a slippery slope...but it's not that far from reality. I haven't read the entire thread, but has anyone mentioned the use of music already in the public sphere? Any Bach's left to lay claim to music rights?

On a more serious note, I would imagine that most Corps will not totally abandon the music thats out there in the public square. There is still lots of good music out there that doesn't cost a Corps an arm and a leg to utilize. Some of it is of course from Music written eons ago ( ala Bach ) and so forth. We'll probably see a combo mix of the public square music coupled with that from the Drum Corps self written original compositions realm over the coming decade, imo. After that,.. who knows. Jeff Ream
Not picking on or at you, Jeff. Just posting the following link for general info on the matter... http://law.freeadvice.com/intellectual_property/copyright_law/copyright_statute_limitations.htm ok so say the court goes $30,000.....remember, that's per violation. now look at the number of songs performed in DCI back to 1972. now multiply that by $30,000. thats oodles of money
HornTeacher
You wimp! You're not the first who have wished to render that assessment, G. Get in line and wait like everybody else.

wonker
of course that would just be the penalties on the complaint..........and would still include everything being taken down.. Then the cost would be in play if DCI ever tried to rebuild the archives or Fan Network for streaming. Then, all streaming rights would need to be acquired and paid for,
Jeff Ream
but if the information that was posted is correct, they could only go back 3-5 years to collect. still a lot of tunes. Now remember.....this is for all forms of licensing too......arrange, sync, etc
wonker
but within that 3-5 year range, most if not all licenses should have been acquired properly and should be up to date. Only exceptions would be the few cuts already known and in place for material that would never be granted permissions anyway.
