2015 vs. 2016 - Daily Year over Year Comparisons

Recommended Posts

I was really interested to see these comparisons the last two days. Good stuff.

One note though, Music City's score drop was an error. It has since been fixed by DCI.

Fixed!

2016 - Quite a few changes from Atlanta to Allentown now that the full regional is complete with 12 of 22 corps finishing in a different place.

  • The Cavaliers has moved into #5, with The Cadets moving to #6.
  • Blue Stars has moved into #8, with Phantom Regiment moving to #9.
  • The Academy has moved into #11, up one spot.
  • Boston Crusaders has moved into #12, up two spots.
  • Madison Scouts has moved into #13, down two spots.
  • Troopers has moved into #14, down one spot.
  • Oregon Crusaders has moved into #16, up two spots.
  • Mandarins has moved into #17, down one spot.
  • Pacific Crest has moved into #18, up one spot.
  • Spirit of Atlanta has moved into #19, down two spots.

Answers to Allentown night 2 questions:

  • Have Boston Crusaders entered the top 12? Crossmen hold head-to-head lead 18-1 this season. Will that continue? And where do both corps stand compared to The Academy's strong performance on Friday? Boston Crusaders are top 12 in Allentown with a .0500 lead over Madison Scouts. Crossmen finished in the #10 spot for the third regional in a row with The Academy moving up to #11.
  • Where do Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cadets and The Cavaliers finish? On Thursday, the 3 corps were separated by 0.550 (separate show for The Cavaliers). Based on head-to-head records, it should be Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cadets, The Cavaliers. Santa Clara Vanguard won out with The Cavaliers gaining the #5 spot over The Cadets. The margin is tight with only 0.500 separating the the three corps.
  • How does Carolina Crown fit into the Bluecoats/Blue Devils story? If the corps followed Thursday night's results, we would see Carolina Crown in third place for the second regional in a row, but within a point of the lead. Carolina Crown came out just behind Blue Devils and within 0.400 of Bluecoats. The fact that the placements are the same as Atlanta belies the closeness of the current situation in #1-3.

Regional to Regional to Regional:

  • Top three corps in San Antonio to Allentown improvement: The Academy (+10.025), Boston Crusaders (+9.362), Pacific Crest (+9.049).
  • Top three corps in Atlanta to Allentown improvement: Boston Crusaders (+5.725), Phantom Regiment (+4.463), The Cavaliers (+4.300).
  • Bottom three corps in San Antonio to Allentown improvement: Spirit of Atlanta (+6.262), Madison Scouts (+7.075), Mandarins (7.163).
  • Bottom three corps in Atlanta to Allentown improvement: Spirit of Atlanta (+0.925), Pioneer (+1.475), Troopers (+1.900).

2015 - Genesis had the largest score increase (+1.675) while Pacific Crest lost the most ground (-3.100). Blue Devils B gained the most in the rankings (+3 to #18) while Pacific Crest fell (-3 to #21).

Year over Year - In 2015, only 5 corps finished in a different placement in Allentown than Atlanta. In 2016, that number is 12, more than half the corps in competition. Gold returned to the top of the "most improved category." If the season ended today, the corps would finish 5 spots higher than last year at #29. Two corps are tied on the opposite end of this story: Madison Scouts and Vanguard Cadets. Madison Scouts is currently 5 spots lower at #13 and Vanguard Cadets are 5 spots lower at #21.

2016 - The top 3 were head-to-head and the results match Allentown's two-night comparison with Blue Devils cutting the gap to 0.050. The largest score increase from Allentown was Madison Scouts (+0.200) while the largest decrease went to Boston Crusaders (-1.800). The Cadets regained their lead over The Cavaliers for the #5 spot. Blue Stars moved ahead of Phantom Regiment in score, not head-to-head competition and the same was true for Madison Scouts and Boston Crusaders in the crucial fight for #12. Blue Devils B come into the open class preliminary round as heavy favorites. Four corps will be eliminated from open class competition tonight although they will get a chance to compete again on Thursday.

2015 - The Cavaliers had the largest score increase (+1.850) while Pioneer lost the most ground (-2.500). Blue Devils passed Carolina Crown in first place with no movement at or near the cut-offs for top 25 and top 12.

Year over Year - In 2015, four corps (Bluecoats, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, The Cadets) left Allentown within 1.0 of the gold medal but after the Buffalo show, that number was cut to two (Blue Devils, Carolina Crown). In 2016, three corps (Bluecoats, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown) left Allentown within 1.0 of the gold medal and all three remain after Buffalo. Gold remains at the top of the "most improved category." If the season ended today, the corps would finish 5 spots higher than last year at #29. On the other end of the spectrum, Vanguard Cadets would finish 5 spots lower this year at #21.

2016 - In open class preliminary competition, there was only one change in placement with River City Rhythm passing Shadow for #12. This was a significant spot to see movement as it meant River City Rhythm earned the last spot in open class finals. Scores were way up for these corps, on average 2.464 points. Vanguard Cadets led the way (+4.350) to pull within 0.600 of Blue Devils B for the open class title. Impulse saw the least gain (+0.075).

In world class regular season competition, Mandarins gained a spot on Oregon Crusaders in head-to-head competition. Carolina Crown closed the gap to Bluecoats down to 0.150 and The Cadets defeated Santa Clara Vanguard for the first time since July 21. The greatest improvement in score went to Troopers (+1.300) while Blue Knights decreased most (-0.800). Heading into world class prelims on Thursday, there is clearly a three-way race for the gold medal and then a three-way race for #4-6. With last night's scores, it appears that Blue Knights do not have #7 locked and there's now a group of corps from #7 all the way to #10 within about 1.5 points. Add in the story line related to The Academy's push for a finalist position and the race for #12 between Boston Crusaders and Madison Scouts and there's quite a lot to learn this week. The comparison between open and world class corps right now seems a bit convoluted with huge increases in scores at open class prelims that are unlikely to hold up on Thursday. However, as the scores stand today at face value, three world class corps (Cascades, Jersey Surf, & Pioneer) would miss the cut for semifinals making room for a total of 5 open class corps to participate. Last year, the top corps dropped 3-4 points from open class finals to world class prelims as a point of reference.

2015 - Bluecoats pulled up to a tie for #3 with The Cadets in head-to-head competition. Vanguard Cadets came out on top of open class prelims with a 0.325 lead over Blue Devils B. The largest score increase went to Rhythm City Rhythm (+4.350); 7th Regiment was the only corps to decrease in score (-0.250). River City Rhythm and Les Stentors both gained 4 spots in the rankings to #29 and #34 respectively.

Year over Year - At the end of the regular seasons, there's quite a fight for the gold medal in both 2015 and 2016. Last year, four corps were within striking distance and that's true for three corps this year. There are now three corps tied for the greatest placement gain year over year: Legends (+5 to #20), Gold (+5 to #29), and Raiders +5 to #31). Spirit of Atlanta is poised for the greatest decrease (-5 to #23). These stats will likely change a bit as the week goes on and open and world class corps come together in competition.

Wouldn't Pioneer also miss the cut?

2016 - In open class finals competition, there were no changes in placement order at all from prelims competition with Blue Devils B expanding its lead over Vanguard Cadets and winning all captions. In fact, Blue Devils B had the biggest score increase (+0.537) while River City Rhythm saw the biggest decline (-2.100). It will be interesting to see how the open and world class corps line up once head to head on Thursday. As it stands now, two world class corps (Jersey Surf and Pioneer) would miss the cut for semifinals while five open class corps would be in (Blue Devils B, Vanguard Cadets, Legends, Genesis, Spartans). As a reminder, last year the top open class corps dropped on average by 3-4 points from open class finals to world class prelims though so only time will tell for sure.

2015 - In 2015, there was quite a bit of movement within the open class placements from prelims to finals although Vanguard Cadets held on to win the title over Blue Devils B.

Year over Year - The top open class corps in both years finished finals ranked #16 overall. Three corps are now on track for an improvement of 5 positions from 2015 to 2016: Legends (#25 to #20), Gold (#34 to #29), Raiders (#36 to #31). Spirit of Atlanta is looking at the greatest decline year over year (#18 to #23).

2016 - Here we are. All corps competing together. In the end, two world class corps missed out on semifinals competition (Jersey Surf in 26th and Pioneer in 29th). Madison Scouts edged Boston Crusaders for the #12 spot with one night left to earn the last finalist position. The only change in the top 12 from Allentown was The Cadets moving back into the #5 spot over The Cavaliers. The top 3 are still within a point although Bluecoats opened up the lead just a little bit. The biggest score improvement over last performance went to Cascades (+4.088), coinciding with an improvement of 3 spots in the rankings to #22.Colt Cadets saw the greatest decrease (-3.905) to #38.

2015 - Prelims saw Carolina Crown edging out The Cadets for the #1 spot. Blue Devils fell to #4 with a penalty. Legends barely edged out 7th Regiment for the final spot in semifinals.

Year over Year - The top open class corps in both years earned the #15 overall spot in world class prelims. finished finals ranked #16 overall. Three corps are now on track for an improvement of 4 positions from 2015 to 2016: The Academy (#15 to #11), Blue Devils B (#19 to #15), Gold (#34 to #30). Madison Scouts (#8 to #12) and Vanguard Cadets (#20 to #16) are set to have the greatest decline year over year.
