N.E. Brigand
i've never watched a BOA show in my life, but i just looked up that show on Youtube for fun to see if the claim held any water. It didn't. Not even a little. That pit wouldn't even be able to play half of what the Cadets brass played last season. Open any can you want, but you'll sound like a dilettante. Just fyi, last fall this discussion happened: Why is this HS band show better designed than half the 2015 top 12? Broken Arrow was the focus (this was a few days before they won BOA--deservedly). Some interesting commentary followed. Eventually that thread meandered too much and was closed. I'm willing to leave it thus, with that "can" opened no further, but I agree with you--while still having enjoyed B.A.'s show very much. There is something to George's original point: some good BOA shows are more enjoyable, albeit far less proficient, than some top twelve DCI shows--and as I noted then, I think the reason is that the need to demonstrate enormous proficiency gets in the way of designing interesting shows.
