Time for top 14 on sat night

Recommended Posts

I don't know. I think Broken Arrow played Shostakovich better than The Cadets last year and Broken Arrows version wasn't as watered down as you would think.

But this is also another can of worms even I don't want to crack open.

i've never watched a BOA show in my life, but i just looked up that show on youtube for fun to see if the claim held any water.

it didn't.

not even a little.

that pit wouldn't even be able to play half of what the cadets brass played last season.

open any can you want, but you'll sound like a dilettante.

If you want top 14 then how about just say (insert sarcasm here), "If you get a qualifying score of _____, then you make finals." Then we might get 15 or 16! :poke::shutup:

Or, 8. Depends what goes in the ____.

There's always someone who's going to have to sit. Its just the nature of the beast. If the fear of losing money, is greater than the potential rewards, you don't go gamble at a casino? right?

While both played well, it just is what it is.

Does it stink to sit out? yup. Will those two programs do everything possible to not do that next season? yup.

I don't believe expanding the finals night pool, or giving them a consolation performance is the correct way to handle two very good ensembles not making the cut. Sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to.

Now we just need to get Thursday up to 51.

I wonder if the format could be like the NCAA men's basketball tournament, with a "play-in" contest on Wednesday. LOL

If placing "25th" meant what it used to, none of this would be an issue.

For those of us old enough to remember; there used to be this thing called "the top 25." With the vast number of corps that competed at DCI in those years, placing 25th was a pretty big accomplishment. Placing in the top 17...even bigger. And then the top 12.
With all that being said, I still think the top 12 should remain as is. It's not broken, no need to fix it.

6 is also a 'magic number' in that sequence; in fact in the history of DCI only the top 6 from Prelims have had a shot at a medal; so would it not stand to reason that if Finals are the best of the best then 6 should be the number of corps performing on Saturday?

To paraphrase a sacred tome:

Then, shalt thou count to twelve, no more, no less. Twelve
shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting
shalt be twelve. Thirteen shalt thou not count, nor either count thou eleven,
excepting that thou then proceed to twelve. Fifteen is right out.

Pretty sure that's happened at times in DCI's past: corps who had done well enough at earlier regional events didn't appear until "Quarterfinals", which were preceded by "Prelims" at which other corps competed to play-in as you describe.

I don't know how old one has to be, but I thought I'd pick a round number and look back to thirty years ago.

According to Corps Reps, the DCI championships in 1986 featured 62 corps in all:

29 -- World Class

13 -- Class A

20 -- Class A60

This year, there were 38 corps at the championships:

22 -- World Class

16 -- Open Class

(In both years, there were corps who did not compete in DCI's championships, and while I haven't checked, I assume there were more in 1986.)

But as for determining a top 25, more corps competed head to head this year than did so 30 years ago.

In 1986, 24 corps, including 5 corps from Class A and 2 corps from Class A60, competed in World Class quarterfinals. From that group, 14 corps moved on to W.C. semifinals, where they were joined by 12 corps who had been seeded in based on performance earlier int he season.

In 2016, all 38 corps noted above competed in W.C. prelims.

So the years are arguably comparable.

Anyway, how much in the way of boasting rights does a corps deserve for being top 25 then vs. now, if the former largely means having defeated more corps that don't even break 60 points?

Is it any less impressive to have been the 25th-place corps from 2016, the Spartans, than the 25th-place corps from 1986, Connexion Quebec?

I can't find video of the latter, but a few minutes of the show from the 24th-place corps, Canadian Knights, indicates that their performance was no better than what this year's Spartans presented.
