Open Class corps in World Class Semis

Recommended Posts

It's very possible that either BDB or SCVC could crack the Top 15. BDB is more likely, given that they placed 15th in 2 of the past 3 seasons and they have not yet been defeated by SCVC this season.

And I agree that there will be 4, possibly 5 corps from Open/International Class in Semifinals. My prediction is that Music City and Legends will be the other 2 from the US, and as mentioned above, if The Company places 25th or higher, they too will be in Semifinals.

The Company is an all-age corps.  Will they allow them to compete for a legitimate spot in finals?

They compete under the international rules set. They can make Open Class Finals, but cannot displace another corps to do so. For example, if they make finals, Open Class would have thirteen in finals instead of the normal twelve.

I'm not sure how the rules are applied when it comes to World Class prelims/semis, but I'd guess it would be a similar situation. If they make it to Friday, DCI would likely just add an extra corps.

There have been 4 the last two years, right?  BDB and Vanguard Cadets are locks.  The others had been Legends and Genesis, but now that Genesis has moved up, looks like Music City may take that spot.  Well, until my Guardians get into their groove...  :bluedevil:  My only-slightly-informed guess is 4 again.

Absolute maximum of 4 Open Class corps in Semis again; there's no way Scades or Genesis will be topped by 7th Regiment, Louisiana Stars, or Guardians.

Two battles lie ahead in terms of Open vs. World: BDB & SCVC vs. Troop/Crest/Spirit/OC, and, the big one, in my mind: Surf vs. Legend & Spartans for the last Friday spot.

Music City seems to have wrapped up the third Open Class spot in Semis; they've stayed steadily ahead of Legends for weeks now. I believe they'll land in 24th when all is said & done --- below Cascades & Genesis, but above the last corps to make it in on Friday. In terms of that last corps, Legends is certainly set up the best right now to snag that spot. I don't think this year's show is as lightning-in-a-bottle as last year's, and I'm sure almost folding while on the road took a toll on the corps' morale (which was then built right back up, I assume). I like Surf's show and I'm always rooting for them to do well. They finally seem to have found a good entertaining-yet-competitive vein for their design after a few years of searching, and I'd like to see them clean up enough to grab the 25th spot --- the show is certainly there at this point. Spartans always come out of their quiet season stronger than anyone anticipates, making Semis the last 5 years in a row. Their visual prowess has been the caption that has vaulted them over Surf the last two years. Below that, we will have Pioneer, Louisiana Stars, 7th Regiment, Southwind, Guardians, & Gold all within 3 - 5 points of Semis.

The battle that more people seem to be interested in: BDB & SCVC vs. world class. In my opinion, these two corps' placements within world class vary year to year based on the skill of the non-finalist world class corps, not on SCVC & BDB themselves. Those two corps are always terrific and max out their smart designs year after year; their placements change from year to year based on how clean and well-designed the world corps are. This season, I believe 16th is the max for BDB, although I predict 17-18 is where they will land. Colts have a MUCH stronger show than last year's snooze fest and prop mishap, and they're focusing and vaulting near the top 12, not staying ahead of BDB. Mandarins, Scouts, Academy, & Colts will take us down to 15th place, and all will be pushing to play on Saturday night.

So, the battle, to me at least, will be between BDB, Troop (I hate that i'm typing that), Spirit, OC, Crest, & SCVC, giving us places 16 - 21. I've said it on other threads, but OC, Spirit, and Crest are taking a page from BDB & SCVC's playbook this year: designs that were smart and engaging from the beginning that are matched with the corps' current abilities in order to be cleaned & maxed by Indy. In the past few years, Oregon usually still has a dirty, but entertaining, show at Finals; this year's design is perfect for them. Spirit struck gold as well this season and has a terrific show in every aspect that is just right for the members. While PC's demand levels are usually within their reach, they have a much smarter design this season. Troop is, of course, a more talented corps than BDB or SCVC, but falls in this grouping (in my opinion only) based more on the belief that the groups below them with better visual design choices will pass them up, or at least rise to their scoring neighborhood, by Indy.

This week and next week is when we see a good number of Open Class shows and corps that have not faced each other yet go head to head. Though Music City and Legends have scored higher than Spartans, I have a feeling Spartans will give both a run for their money and in years past there has been a bit more movement in OC than we see in WC.  So while I think there is little question that SCVC and BDB will be in semi's, as other posters have mentioned, how many other OC corps in finals remains to be seen. Last year we had five, but one was Genrsis who is now in WC. It does seem likely Pioneer may be bumped, with  another possibility being Surf though I could see Surf being a late bloomer based on the potential I thought I saw earlier in the season.  Cascades seems to be safe at this point as does Genesis. If I had to guess, I would pick Spartans as the corps that will place 3rd in Michigan City and make semi's.
