Scores Needed in Allentown for Corps to Move Up in Ranking

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I got bored and did the math.

Every year, DCI determines the Prelims line-up by averaging the scores from San Antonio, Atlanta (if present), Winston-Salem (if present), and Allentown. If a corps is at both Atlanta and Winston-Salem, they average those scores.

Below is the ranked list of every World Class corps, their current regional average, and how much higher of a score than the corps in front of them they need to outrank them; for example, if Blue Devils score a 95.000 in Allentown and Boston Crusaders score higher than a 98.250, they will be the #1 rank for Prelims. For certain tight groups (2-4, 5-7, and 17-19), I'll also list the score needed to jump to the top of that group; for example, if Boston Crusaders score a 95.000 and Carolina Crown scores higher than a 95.463 and scores higher than Bluecoats, Carolina Crown will jump both of them and become the #2 rank. As we saw last year with 11-14, performance order doesn't fully matter, but it's a fun thing to look at.

Blue Devils - 62.300 {0.000}

Boston Crusaders - 61.217 {3.250}

Bluecoats - 61.138 {0.238}

Carolina Crown - 61.063 {0.225} {0.463 for #2}

Phantom Regiment - 58.983 {6.238}

Mandarins - 58.979 {0.013}

The Cadets - 58.888 {0.275} {0.285 for #5}

The Cavaliers - 57.871 {3.050}

Blue Stars - 56.850 {3.063}

Colts - 56.225 {1.875}

Troopers - 56.221 {0.013}

Blue Knights - 54.179 {6.125}

Pacific Crest - 53.983 {0.588}

Crossmen - 53.267 {2.148}

Madison Scouts - 52.325 {2.825}

The Academy - 52.313 {0.038}

Spirit of Atlanta - 52.050 {0.788} {0.825 for #15}

Music City - 51.550 {0.788}

Genesis - 49.250 {6.900}

Jersey Surf - 46.892 {7.075}

Seattle Cascades - 46.150 {2.228}

Why are these numbers so low?

I built the Excel sheet to already have Allentown built in, so each corps has an effective 0 for a third score at this time. I could've done it /2 but I was lazy and already have all the regionals built in to the format.

Confusion for me is if they will average Atlanta/Winston Salem like they did to determine Allentown, or if they'll do a straight average of all four if you attended both of those events.

That will actually determine 3/4 for Carolina Crown and Bluecoats.  If they average those two scores before plugging Atlanta weekend into the total average, Bluecoats are seeded 3rd and Carolina Crown 4th.  If they just do a straight average of all four events, then Carolina Crown is seeded 3rd and Bluecoats 4th (#### Atlanta PENALTY LOL)

Atlanta/Night beat is supposed to be averaged first. Then you take that number, and plug it in with the other two numbers. So 3 numbers are being averaged for the prelims
