How did Santa Clara win in 89?

Recommended Posts

I'll elaborate a bit more.

Phantom 89, for me, was like Phantom 96 for many...you lost sense of time. the perofmance sucked you in...the power and the passion.

SCV wasnt as good as 88 as an overall show...many to this day contend SCV should have been gone due to the overage controversy. I see their point as well as SCV's.

Phantoms drums..well, ok they weren't all that. SCV's had some audible dirt as well.

However, how SCV got some of those visual numbers with members bumping into each other at finals in amazing.

GE...IMO, a tie. both shows pulled our hearts.

Phantom by .3 on brass and visual.

Thanks Jeff!

Someone sees past the blinders..

FYI, to those who may have felt slighted w/ the '78 Regiment, they should be happy they got to finals that year in 2nd Place..I have it from one of the judges from Prelims that PR had a 5 yard mistake in alignment in the opener that was never spotted by the Execution judges or the the M&M GE judge. He commented on his sheet, and was somewhat ostracized by the others.

Kinda makes you wonder!

Still think both 89 shows were awesome.

Pat

After seeing Phantom Of The Opera in the theatres the other day, it prompted me to watch SCV 89 again, and after watching this, and then seeing Phantom's show from that year, I don't understand how SCV won. SCV 89 is probably one of my favorite shows (gotta love the company front of Music Of The Night), and I love Santa Clara, I hope to at least try out for the corps, but it seems clear that Phantom should've won, and I know many others agree. Santa Clara alot of problems just musically (I can't help but notice all of the fracked notes which actually ruined musical moments).

As a member of SCV 89 I think the reason we won was because our drill was insane and we still managed to march the #### out of it and play!!! But, I won't pretend to be a musical expert since I was a member of the colorguard. I do know for a fact that I've never worked so hard as when I was under the instruction of Wes Cartwright. That man was a genius. We'd also won every show (except Concord) up until that night. I don't think we were suddenly thrown into first. Just my opinion, but of course I'm bias. One way or another I still have a ring.

Welcome Marymouse and I agree with your post. Congratulations, years later for a well deserved, hard-earned victory. What an emotional rollercoaster of a show.

I especially loved the guard during "wishing you were somehow here again" , the guard with the see-thru black silks, kneeling on the ground...what an emotional moment......thanks for the memories.

Funny thing. On the PBS broadcast, during "Wishing" there is a closeup of a guard member. If just so happens that that guard member is Marymouse!!!!!

Back then I heard that the guard staff staff from Union High School did Santa Clara's guard starting in '89. (There certainly was a noticeable difference in style and presentation from the '88 guard to the '89 one.) True, or just a rumor?
