Maestro767
Several corps used characters to push the theme of the show this Summer... Madison: Carmen Phantom: Gene Kelly Cadets: The 4 Schoolgirls ... is this a trend? And if so, is it a good thing or a bad thing? Vote and Discuss. mello4life
I think it depends as well. Scheherezade was a wonderful character who added to SCV's show in 2004, as well as Carmen in Madison's 2005 production. I don't think the Fred Astaire character or four school girls served a major purpose.
bawker
1986 SCV: "Magician" 2004 SCV: Scherezade 1990 VK: The "Hollywood Traveler" IMO, it's nothing new really, it's just all in how you use it. Where as these older shows weren't as "literal" in their storytelling, the 2005 shows were. It's just updating an old trick with the visual rewards of the moment. :) Edited August 18, 2005 by bawker
Galen
Suncoast Sound: "THE Girl" from 1988. Wonder whatever happened to that girl, anyway?

Since the show used the song "An American in Paris," that's what the guy's role was. He basically WAS the theme.
SkyRyder_FMM
You can go even earlier in time to find use of characters. Anyone remember the Bridgemen? :-) Madison's Alice in Wonderland show in '71? Sky Ryders OZ and West Side Story productions? Velvet Knights bull fight in '88 (freaking hilarious!). Use of characters is simply nothing new.
Watch & Listen
What about VKs shark and "Fat Lady/Viking Woman"?? I said depends - it always depends B)
mobrien
Done for laughs (VK) or at least in a light fashion (PR's soloist this year), who cares one way or another. Done for SERIOUS DRAMATIC EFFECT (no names, they know who they are... :P ), cringe inducing...
