Off the top of my head and random:

Phantom or SCV, please look at "The Black Maskers" by Roger Sessions, especially the last movement of it. I think that's a piece that can provide ideas for an entire show in and of itself.

Cavies...if you're going to keep doing the original music thing, try using more of McTee's pieces as starting points for rhythm.

BD...I'm sure Mr. Downey is working on a brass book that will be far far far from 4th place, a la the difference between 90 and 91. No suggestions.

Crown: Symphonie Fantastique. You've taken us to heaven, now take us somewhere else.

Crown: Marriage of Figaro

Phantom: Music of Bartok, Prokovfiev, and Dvorak

SCV: Anime kinda show would be cool... Think Blue Stars 2004. Cool show.

Cadets: Dream Theater.

Blue Devils: Something brassy, but take a year off from jazzy. James Newton Howard music.

Cavies: Matrix would be cool.

I did mention this in another thread as a suggestion for Crown, but I'd love to hear someone delve into Carl Nielsen's "Aladdin" suite. Not necessarily as a whole show, but maybe. You could get 11 minutes of drum corps material out of it, or it could be part of an Arabian Nights or perhaps a Silk Road themed show.

Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings.

Perfect for either the Mandarins or the Nashua Spartans, IMO.

Here Here!!! although 04 was amazing and i love listening to 05...... go back to the esoteric shows which made me fall in love with Vanguard

Dear God, no. I pray that they stay with the listenable sort of romantic/symphonic SCV music that made *ME* fall in love with them. Or else the grand storytelling style of the late 80s and very early 90s. That's what says "Santa Clara Vanguard" to the majority of fans over the age of 25, at least. There's a reason more people show up for the symphony when they play Shostakovich or Copland than when they play some god-awful esoteric modern noise.

And P.S. I've said this before, too, but my one real hope is that the Blue Devils return to some really in-you-face, knock-down drag-out BD-style power jazz ... the past two years they've really put too much thought into what they're trying to do. Just arrange an enjoyable straight-ahead brass book, man, and let the rest develop out of that. Leave the winter guard shows to WGI and give us what you know we want from the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps. [/rant]
