SunAndrea
10 out of 16 open class getting in is a good number.any more than that, and you're the NHL where everyone makes playoffs. if anything needs to be expanded, it's Class A. if it's going to stay at 10 or more, at least give em 5. or submit a rules proposal. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I totally agree. 10 out of 16 is just under 2/3 of the Open corps. As for Class A... I would have loved if it was 3 in finals last year (mumblemumble). The ratio there is pretty good. But still, I like this whole "focusing on the little guys" idea. Maybe bump that up too. Props to Jeff.
cmdiddle
Well, seeing as though greater than half of the corps at DCA are not from the NE area and require additional travel time, these should not be major issues. GCS left Wednesday night, returned the following Tuesday night, and still fielded a full corps. There are ways to get around these issues. sorry but i guess you've never worked for a company that insists you have to have one day in around a holiday weekend in order to be paid for the holiday.i.e. you have the choice take Friday off or Tuesday off but you can't take both off. also you have parents who are willing to have their child miss one day of classes for drum corps knowing that the Friday before a holiday weekend they aren't going to miss much, but they won't have them miss Tuesday as that will be considered a real school day with work, homework, sports practices, etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Under eighteen years of age members require participation of a parent or guardian. Of the 48 (I think) we put on the field, we had nine or ten under eighteen. SunAndrea
may i ask if you have an age limit for members? i.e. can't join until they are 18 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think this year our youngest was 14. Last year in the colorguard, I was the oldest at 18. We had a few girls around and under 12 whose fathers were marching or teaching the corps. I don't think anyone did an average age of the members this year, but I would highly doubt it would be much higher than 22 or 23.

Sun isn't the only corps in that situation with younger members.

But of course non of the schools started until after Labor Day. The corps also assumed that the parents were OK with the child marching corps and didn't ask the parents consent. Then again I never saw an insurance waiver until 1977 or so (talk about a different era).

I'm not going to let this thread stray too much, but I will say that all of the corps from other parts of the country have had to deal with problems such as these from their beginnings. We all had to adopt a "nationwide" mind-set from the start in order to succeed. The NE corps are just beginning to have to deal with these same issues. All I'm saying is that as challenging as these all are, they are not insurmountable. Flexibility, creativity, and a lot of advice from your friends across the country would help.
