I was HIT by a thrown baby at Allentown in 88. Ouch.

Just another peril of being in the pit percussion. . . (the others involve golf carts: navigating traffic in downtown Atlanta and being chased by police for driving through a Dairy Queen pick-up window)

ok, keep it coming....and if this is the case....is it international? Our friends up north, do you throw babies, eh? or down south (if there are any Mexican corps) ¿usted lanza a bebés? (insert country and language joke here)

They used to say babies were being thrown at us. Or their first born male would be thrown, etc.

I heard it many, many times in drum corps, the first time we layed down while spinning our rifles they threw babies. George B. used to say that during Danny Boy woman were throwing babies! So yes, it's here in the North East...and I remember it in the early 70s, I believe it's an old saying!

Charlie used to use that phrase when he taught us at 27th. What a great guy to have as a caption head!

The officers chasing you were on foot, right? Otherwise, it sounds like an entry into dumb crook news!

:P

Is it said because someone in the crowd thinks that you are so FREAKIN good that they want to give you the best thing that they have?!?! Their own child?!? Or did babies become the preffered projectile because hotel room keys, hot dogs, and money were too hard to divy up among all of the corps members?

------or is it more of a "take my child and make him one of you" kind of thing, like Moses getting put in the basket or something, to provide a better life for him......?!?!

I always took it to mean that the show (or some moment in the show) was so (expletive of choice)'in good that it made people throw their arms up and cheer no matter what was in their hands at the time -- including babies.

Amen! to the person with the post below.

Mom

Akachan o nageru no?!?----Japan, though it seems to be an odd phrase for them to comprehend i bet......

Holy throwing babies party....I have heard it a lot....

My question is:

WHo is bringing their baby to a drum corps show anyway?!?! I'd throw someones baby if it was whining during Carolina Crowns ballad this year- (that whole show is deserving of all sorts a baby throwin) -I would have probably thrown the parent too....

Any thoughts?

By the time finals rolls around the sometimes say 'make them throw burning babies'.

Never burning babies...that is a new one to me

Yes! So #### good you have to throw something, and if you have baby in your hands launch that sucker.

My Mom threw me a few times as a youngin, too bad it was never at a drumcorps. I definately heard the throwing babies thing during the late eighties on the east coast.

Did anyone hear about the baby thrown at SCV in '86? I heard the cymbal line raised him and the kid aged out this year. Can anyone confirm this?
