Harmonicas in drum corps?

Recommended Posts

Maybe someone can answer this for me. Based on the rules that DCI uses right now regarding pit instrumentation and amplification, could a corps legally use a harmonica in their show (I'm thinking specifically about a blues-style harmonica)? Thanks.

Southwind used kazoos during their '97 show. Entire hornline on the field played them.

I wouldn't consider a kazoo to be an instrument independently. It's basically an attachment for the voice, to change the tone color. The voice is an instrument that is legal in drum corps.

What about juice harps? Why don’t we ever talk about juice harps? I would love to see a corps march a juice harp line.

I would think that (juice?) harps are legal because they're actually just a percussion instrument and the performer uses his or her mouth as a resonating chamber for it. It's not a wind instrument. Has any corps ever used a jaw harp (as I prefer to call them)? Troopers could have used them last year in part of their show, it would have fit!
