For all you trivia and historical buffs, this is not exactly a new idea

Better yet...

give 'em all the same show, and see who performs it better!

In 1956 the Waterloo Music Festival was still considered the Canadian Championships for all kinds of "musical groups" including trumpet and bugle bands. Three elements were evaluated for both the junior and senior divisions: a parade; a "test piece" that was given to each "band" several weeks before hand; and a "fancy drill" presentation.

By 1957, however, many "bugle bands" had more or less adopted the American style M& M field show. They decided to form the Canadian Drum Corp Association and hold their own "championship" on the same day as the Waterloo Music Festival. Some "bands" (notably, Preston Scout House, the reigning Canadian Champions) opted to stick with the Waterloo Festival so in 1957 the Leaside Lions "Jungle Kings" actually became the very first Canadian "Drum Corps" Champions.

In 1958 virtually everyone agreed to join the CDCA and the Toronto Optimists won their first of eleven consecutive Canadian Championships. Scout House finished second and De La Salle "Oaklands" placed third in their very first year of competition. Several years later De La Salle was a founding member of DCI and was, in fact, the reason for the "I" in DCI.

So I say - Bring back Powerhouse!

Funny you should say that.

At Cap Reg in 04, almost ALL of our staff came from the Cadets. Either they marched with them or taught with them (the exception was our Tuba tech...who was a Cavie! Boy did he ever ger jabbed!) right down to the designers, Bocook and Saktig, and we were basically taught Cadets technique and we did everything Cadet-like.

It got to the point where we started calling ourselves the Cadet Cadets, or B Squad, or Junior Varsity.

It was not uncommon after we finished performing at a show to hear myself or someone else remark in mock enthusiasm: "Come on guys! Lets go watch Varsity Team!"

Ah. Good times. :)

Murph marched Cadets? I know he did a camp or two, then he went back to BD
