CD recording issues?

However, the complaint is very much warranted that the 2nd disc is much, much louder than the first. I fully expected to blow a speaker when Phantom started (was hoping to, really :P ), but didn't even really rattle my windows. Crown and BK, though...well, they did the trick.

Blue Devils, Cadets....turn down your amps. It's pretty bad when Season Pass gives me better audio to pick out the p-mf brass parts. Blue Devils entire opening backfield brass stuff is overpowered by the pit ("Dah, dah da daaa daa GACK GA GACK GLONG GLONG GLONG da GAK GAK...and then the backfield soprano barely comes through ), as is most of the opener for the Cadets.

There's a guy at the board for a reason..when the keyboards aren't the melody, they don't need to be on "11".

Cavaliers amps weren't as bad as I'd thought they'd be...'Coats got it about right (soloist and steel drum groove = tight)

I can't say if it was the amps, or just the recordings. As you pointed out in the first paragraph, the second CD offers far more brass presence than the first. Crown and BK are tremendous! But for disc 1 the hornlines all sound kind of neutered. There are brass parts even in the Cavaliers' ballad that simply cannot be heard, even without any amps present. Interestingly, the vocals in Cadets ballad are almost inaudible as well. I wonder if perhaps there was an issue with mic placement, because it's not just that the amps are loud in certain shows, but that the brass is almost edited out of certain shows.

I noticed mics in the same location as ever other year.

Each time I listen, I'm increasingly disappointed in the difference in overall volume between disc 1 &2. There is such a big difference, I'm surprised they were shipped this way.

You could try importing the cd into itunes (at the lossless rate). Right click on the song(s), select "get info" and then click on the "options" tab. There, you can adjust the volume and eq settings. Then, just burn another copy of the cd.

How do you get the "lossless" rate?

Select the "Edit" dropdown menu, then select "Preferences." Then go to the "Advanced" tab and then the "Importing" tab. Then click on the dropdown menu under "Import Using." There you can switch between mp3, aac, or Apple Lossless Encoder. The latter still uses compression, but much less than mp3 or aac, and is not supposed to impart any compression artifacts that can actually be heard. (i.e. it's still supposed to be "CD quality.") Windows Media Player has a similar option as well.

[quick note: I've adjusted the volume and eq on mp3 files before-- I haven't done this with the lossless format, but I'm assuming you can still do the same with it as well]
