John H
why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? mellO, thank you very much plural: mells cause any more than 5 letters all together confuses us
Just Another Sop
I think it could also stem from the pronunciation of Mellophone. Properly it would be Mell-O-phone but many people pronounce it Mell-UH-phone or Mell-EE-phone or most common mell-IH-phone. Thus Melli (or Mellee) could make sense. As for me, I prefrer to call one a Mell and plural being Mells. Edited November 21, 2006 by Just Another Sop
ResQ51Kmg365
Seems the term melli is quite popular here in western PA (as that is the only place I've heard it). It makes me cringe and some of the older guys even have melli on their corps jackets. When whoever is in front of the line says "Melli's at measure 14...." I never put my horn up :P But then again, I like to live on the edge B)
G-horns
I call 'em midrange. Probably because I'm hopin' to hear a couple frenchies in there with 'em. All I know is there are a few mellophone players that have to register with the local constabulary because they're using a lethal weapon. Mssrs. Nalls and Lawrence come to mind immediately. Neither of those guys ever met a lip trill they didn't like. b**bs

camel lips
By the way, It really grates on me whenever I hear Soprano's referred to as "Trumpets"! Yuk! :sshh: Off topic but if they are playing a trumpet then call it a trumpet. Never give a trumpet player the satisfaction that he is a soprano player unless he is playing a soprano BUGLE! ^0^
