tommytimp
Sop-Jim Brady Mello-Bonnie Ott/Barbara Moroney Bari-Dave Lang French Horn-Pepe Notaro (sorry) there's also the SCV sop soloist for 'On the Town' the first year, 1983. He had a great Harry James sound to his brief solo.

Interesting that you say it that way...I've always thought the best "Harry James" sound was a sop solo in 90 Madison "City of Angels"...2nd chart, I think. Jazzycat1
Jerry Noonan - 1979 North Star - I dare you to find someone better. There may have been a FEW as good - but NONE better!
madalumni
For baritone I'm voting for the soloist from Madison Scouts 1999. Amazing tone.Edit for my amazing job of typing. A yes. Dave Newcombe. One of the best. for soprano I would include Jim Centerino, Jeff Keivit, John Schipper and Shawn Owens. All have great range and incredible tone quality. ducttapedgerbil
I'm not trying to be a homer, but...I'll have to go with Carl Allison of the Freelancers--late 70's to early 80's he did some awesome solos on bari. On mellophone, I forget the guy's name, but '84 Freelancers in What Is Hip?--fairly intricate work with great tone. There are only a few mello soloists who stand out IMO--so many have a very unsupported and hollow sound. The soloists that most would agree on are the '88 Scouts guy, and Barbara Maroney On soprano--there are way too many to list. It's also impossible to define a single "characteristic sound" when dealing with a wide variety of musical styles. contrajedi8
Best soprano bugle soloists of all time: John Schipper and Shawn Owens of the Madison Scouts I dig the trumpet soloist from 2002 BD, House of the Rising Sun 1998 BD Mello soloist featured throughout 1998 Madison Scouts Contra solo is good too
Hrothgar15
Just making sure everyone is staying on topic here...we're not naming our favorite soloists, but those who had the most characteristic sound on their instruments. Thanks! :)
