tradition vs. new stuff

  1. 1. being somewhat biased, I'd like to submit this poll...do you favor the new "style" music, or the traditional style music...

    • I like the old stuff...malaguena, west side story, etc...emotion and soul...

    • I like the new stuff...incredible difficulty...songs that make you think "how did they play that"?

I think very few shows have made the top 12 without having "emotion and soul" in the last 15 years.

I'm actually going to disagree with that - I think it is more accurate to say that very few have made it without being highly technical lately. However, there are many older traditional pieces that were incredibly technical as well.

I have to admit that I can't vote either. I hate traditional (though I'm not sure what that is) and current drum corps. That's why I spend all my time here on DCP. Hahaa! j/k

Obviously, my favorite era is the mid-80's through the mid-90's because that's when I became a fan and marched. I love the old 70's stuff and there were a lot of quality horn lines even then. I also like some more recent shows also.

My favorite DCI corps of today are corps like PR, SCV, and Kiwanis Kavaliers (whom I had never even heard of until I joined DCP in 2002).

I've never really been into the visual aspect of the shows; I'm into the music, especially brass. When the brass can stand alone in a chart without huge holes for percussion I am happiest.

I like both.. have been and have managed to continue to be entertained by both and see no reason to choose between the two.

There's no third option: "Both are equally appealing to me", so I can't vote.

I won't vote ..... Both have a place in my heart.

I think almost all music is technical, but I could be wrong. Some charts are more difficult than others. But I agree with what you're saying. WWS is not as easy as some would think, add to that Folk Song Suite, and Variations on a Korean Folk Song (of course the Cavies made it really easy by arranging it in a friendly key). Another set of charts that are highly traditional, although 91 Star pretty much defined them, are Pines of Rome and Pines of the Appian Way. Then add to the list what the Muchachos did in the early 70's with Copland.

Some lesser performed charts that are extremely demanding include Ruslan & Ludmilla (84 Xmen), Colas Bruegnon (83 Scouts), PT's Finale to Symphony No. 4 (99 PR).

Candide comes to mind

I like both.

Corps past and present have done both things very well while others, both past and present, haven't sold their shows or style so well.

And why can't the current type of music not have emotion and soul?

I don't like every show today but like most.

However, in the past I didn't like every show either.
