With an admitted bias, VK 1984. The culmination of five years of hard work to go from inactive to finalist.

The story behind the 1976 Guardsmen is truly inspiring and one of hard work that paid off. Even though the performance you hear of the Guardsmen on the '76 recording is laden with obvious errors, and without a doubt the 12th place corps of more recent years are light years ahead of that now, when you hear the story of the Guardsmen making finals that year and listen to their complex, musically challenging show, you have to give them credit. There is a picture floating around somewhere of them reacting to the announcement of their score that day in Philly and the realization they had made DCI finals for the first time. It speaks VOLUMES when you see the looks on their faces, and hear the details of the chaos that ensued for the rest of that day as they prepared to go on for their first DCI finals performance ever just 5 hours later.

A tremendously "full sound" and the beginnings of what would be a powerhouse hornline of the late '70's is all there. I give a hat tip to the Guardsmen's 12th place show. Certainly not the cleanest or "best" 12th place show ever, but probably one of the best "cinderella story" 12th places.
