Wow again. I did not expect Bluecoats to be that close to The Cavaliers.

And nice debut by the Crossmen!

Cavies were a little flat yesterday, and they have their ending on the field now. They've added a baritone solo before the percussion interlude in Pressure. I dont see this show as being done yet!

The Bluecoats are on FIRE! They also have guard uniforms and a COMPLETED guard show. There have been many tweaks to the show since last week. Both corps are really great!

I was suprised by the fact that the stadium wasn't even close to being full!

Glassmen were a BIG step ahead of Crossmen. I honestly had Crossmen about 2 pts ahead of Troopers and 4-5 pts behind Glassmen.

Crossmen have some HUGE ensemble spreads in this show, which offers a high level of demand. They are moving quite well but they are hauling. This is heavily effecting their playing ability. I mean it was plain as day OBVIOUS they were timid and not focussing on balance, blend, tone quality or even intonation. Low brass was fairly good, but mellos and especially Trumpets were in a world of hurt.

Wow, I agree with you!

What's scary is the fact that many more tweaks and improvements are coming in the 'Coats show. I think that the guard program is still incomplete. I could definitely be mistaken, but that's the indication I got after seeing them rehearse at the housing site on Saturday. Quite the total package! If they place even higher in August, they will have certainly earned it, although competition is going to be very tight within the top six. I couldn't even begin to call placements, even being the gigantic Bluecoats homer I am. :) What an exciting year thus far!!!!

I see...didnt know about the 88 thing. For the record, they also beat phantom last year a few times early season (like everyone else). Im still thinking that beating the cavaliers would be a lot more impressive than beating the cavies in 88 (no offense) :P

No offense, Cavaliers "only" took 3rd place the year before. And the year after. Incidentally, Steve Brubaker (legendary Cavalier drill writer) wrote the drill for Bluecoats in 1988.

The guard book is definitely not completed, and it is becoming more exciting with every show! Can't wait to see it in Allentown!

does this pattern look familiar to you? Good, im sorry you took my post as an attack on your personal marching career, i thought it was clearly not meant as such. Even so, the fact remains that they are not only the most dominant they have ever been, they are the possibly the most dominant any corps in dci has ever been.

Ok here's my take on the show- keep in mind that I'm a brass guy!

Legends- not too bad for a little corps. The hornline really put out some nice sounds for being unbalanced as far as actual instrumentation goes. The staff seems to have a pretty firm grasp on solid educational principals with these kids, and I'd expect to see them do well in the D III ranks over the coming years, if that's the route they choose to go.

Troopers- a pleasant surprise. First of all, coming back from a year of inactivity, and to field essentially a full size D 1 corps is impressive feat by the staff. I enjoyed the choices of music. Doug Thrower's arrangements for the brass were great, and leave a lot of potential for some nice musical moments. I would have liked to hear a little more "punch" from the brass, but obviously that will come with added endurance, and overall comfort level with the product.

Southwind- ok. The brassline packed some real power with their sound at times. Personally, I was not a big fan of the original music, but that's just me. I think that original selections on the field can be a real crap-shoot. That being said, they performed very well with what the staff gave them.

Crossmen- nice debut. This show has the potential to be solidly in the mix come finals night. Lots of little "snippets" of good tunes and good use of the entire field. With some minor tweaking of impact points to add a little punch, things should come together very nicely for 'bones as the summer progresses.

Cavaliers- Fun! As always, the cavies visual package is very exciting, with some very innovative body movement from the corps. The show is very entertaining in all aspects. The first big hit of the show really knocked my socks off. The manner in which the arrangers intertwined songs like And So It Goes with Joel's Invention #1 was quite effective, and ingenius. If you haven't heard Billy Joel's classical piano album, check it out! Some serious stuff. Billy Joel is one of my favorite all-time artists, second to Britney Spears (JUST KIDDING) I tip my hat to the staff for putting together a very nice program.

I have to disagree completely with that. I was with a friend and both of us were having problems with the show. The music was over arranged to the point where one had to really listen to know what piece they were playing. The drill moves were okay at best. Cavies have done much better moves (I know it's also early in the season). I can't believe that I'm pining the shows like Framework and Spin Cycle for both musically and visually exciting shows. This show is very beatable.

In regards to the hornline, do they know how to play above a forte? There were times I had a hard time seperating the different pieces of the show because of the arranging. I was insulted as a BJ fan by how badly "And So It Goes" was presented. Did they take cues from late 90's BD? There were times where they were hard to hear above the pits (combination of both pit being overaplified and corps not playing about a mezzo-forte. If I had known that the balance was this bad I would have purchases these ear amps from DCP. DCP_EarAmps.jpg

Cavies make me wish for G bugles badly. Maybe that would help with the sound projection.

Oh, and that goofy bowlegged, duckwalk marching has to go.

Bluecoats- Let me preface this with saying that yes....I'm a complete 'Coats homer. :) That being said....WOW! This show is darker, angrier, and just bad-###! There is a ton of potential for this show to do very well and place VERY high. I can't wait to see the finished product. I was skeptical, as were others I'm sure, of the new uniforms. However, seeing them under the lights, I thought that they really enhanced the visual portion of the show. They look like "big boys" now. The prison jump-suits with the guard were a very nice added effect as well. Very sexy, when they stripped out of the jumpers. I couldn't help but say ####! That horn book is unreal, and yes.....this may be one the best contra..er...tubalines in DCI..period.
This show was fun from beginning to end. In fact 'Coats should have won, IMHO. They showed that you can be very loud and still be enjoyable. This show is the breaking deal IF I would get the CDs of 2007.
Glassmen- good show. Those of you that have played/taught Robert W. Smith's concert works have come to expect somevery challenging, yet very LISTENABLE and Theoretically sound music. This show was a great example. Some execution problems as far as drill sets at impact points, but those problems will correct themselves as the summer progresses. All in all, a very nice product.

Are they done yet? It was a very uninspiring show (which was to be expect considering the past decade of shows).

It's definately down from the previous years (even after the DCM removal). I bought general admission tickets (around 20 yard line) and could have easily found 40 yardline seats it was that empty).
