The FN Janual vids are pretty interesting. Two posted deal directly with "fan experience". In one, Jaime Alvarez Calderon of Crossmen and Matt Harloff of Crown do a decent job of saying what the meeting topics were - the fan "experience" - but give very little information about what sorts of ideas were being bantered around. They do say the whole "event" (DCI week in total, I suppose) is the "whole" show ("...with drum corps going on..."), and "Jumbotron" was mentioned a couple of times.

In the other vid, DCI BOD advisor Steve Auditore talked about a balance between "freedom" for the show designers and DCI's "revenue objectives". He then discusses (very interesting) the "disconnect" between what focus group fans (Friends of DCI in '07) were expecting when attending a show vs what DCI is actually delivering. Specifically, he said the results of that study showed fans were expecting to be entertained by the musical experience but programming was trying to force fans to be entertained by the visual aspect of the show.

Which brings two distinct thoughts: All DCI has to do is, in between shows, show historical footage of the next corps on the jumbotron. Do a corps vignette that gives some flavor of what we're about to see and hear. Get the fans vested in the significance of the next corps. And stop the cheesy Miley Cyrus crap and smoke machines. Use a little freakin' muscle to get the custodians paid for an extra hour or two so we can see a classic retreat (and penalize corps the following year for repeats of 2008!!). Shove your electronics, voice, and other "advancements" down everyone's throat to entice the youngins, but keep a SLIVER of tradition to keep the Legacy fans coming back. I couldn't WAIT to hear AoC blasted at full force. That sound, done well, was the perfect pinnacle for the evening!

Thought two: ...is one tossed here many times: music vs visual. I don't have a strong opinion that many here seem to have, but I find it interesting that they have focus group data that suggests the disconnect is very real from '07, but that there still seems to be no resolution as of yet.

I've had the chance to talk to Steve A. a few times over the years, and every time he leaves me thinking about more than I came in with. And that's always a good thing.

"Janual" stands for the January Annual Meeting, which used to be known simply as the "DCI Annual Meeting." Someone who works in the DCI office coined the term.

I think the word is corps-liscious.

I don't know why Corps have electronics, voice and other "advancements" but I can asure that its not for the youngins. I'm a youngin' and I can tell you that none of thoses things "enticed" me when it came to drum corps.
