  1. FYI, the Cavaliers pit book is written by Eric Johnson. Eric left for about a year and is back. Great book!!!
  2. I wish the corps had won at least 1 championship with John (Brazale), Marty Hurley, and Mark Glascoe still around. Was Mark still with the corps in 1996? Anyhow, those men had a lot to do with the success of Phantom Regiment. Oh yes, I cannot forget Dianne Brazale either.
  3. First of all, I am a former drum corps member, who marched in the late 70s. I am currently in my 24th year as a band director/ composer/ arranger. I have much respect for the drum corps activity of the early days (pre DCI), as well as today. Many of the current designers, instructors, etc. were members of drum corps back in the 70s, 80s, etc. I believe that we need to respect the old drum corps all the way to today. If it hadn't been for the old timers, there wouldn't be an activity today. If it wasn't for today's drum corps, there wouldn't be a future activity for tomorrow's kids. Just my 2 cents worth.
  4. Didn't Ray also arrange 1977? I know Jimmy Elvord was doing the hornline, so I figured Ray wrote the book. Either way, I liked the 1977 book. I believe Dallas Niermeyer did the 1979 book.
  5. I'm sure you never saw the 1978 show which even members will say is the worst the corps ever done. I actually liked last years' show. My wife, who isn't really into drum corps, is a Billy Joel fan and she loved it. Sorry you didn't like it, but some did.
  6. You got that right. In 1978, the corps didn't make finals and then in '79 made 11th. A lot of people felt that the end of the Cavaliers was near. Now look at them, several DCI titles and always a contender. Didn't the same thing happen with the Cadets back in the 1970s? Scouts will be back.
  7. How many of you remember the Nee Hi's from Iowa. I remember seeing them in the very early 1970s.
  8. This whole problem could have been avoided if Sal Salas had been left in charge of the corps. When he left, they lost a great instructional staff and many many vets. It seems to me that they are having a difficult time finding their identity. They are not the Scouts of previous years when they were feared on the field. Hopefully, in time, they will become the Madison Scouts that we once knew.
  9. Are the commands in latin? I know they were back 81 and 82. I'm sure the arrangements are great!! But, I have to admit, that I really think James Wren did an awesome job with the horn book back in 1981 and 82.
  10. I voted for Cavaliers. Why? A large number of veterans and of course I believe that with David Bertman teaching that line, they will definitely be a contender.
  11. Is there a problem with the DCI Fan Network? I just went there and was hoping to watch 1979 Guardsmen. I noticed that the only thing I can play is audio. There were no links for the video part, except to purchase. Is this a change to the site?
  12. There have been many that I can think of. Here are a few of my all time favorites: 1977, 78 Bridgemen Soloists- Pagliacci, Land of Make Believe 1977 Phantom Regiment (Pete Bond)- Pagliacci 1980 Crossmen (Jack Miraculous)- soprano ensemble 1979 Guardsmen Soloists during "Tiger of San Pedro" 1979, 80 North Star soprano soloist during "Ole" 1980 Blue Devils soloists during La Suerta de la tontos 1995 Madison soloists 1982 Cadets (Al Chez) There are countless others that were great. One other that I want to mention was Dan Moore (Geneseo Knights) soloist during 1985 Jesus Christ Superstar show. Excellent player who did a great show every night.
  13. I'm sure it will be great. I really loved the 1981 and 82 versions of Spartacus. I think the corps didn't get the credit they deserved for that show. Also, I think Jim Wren and Marty Hurley did an awesome job with the music. Of course, John Brazale wrote some very good drill for those years.
  14. In the DCI video "Brass Roots" , there is much discussion from the early founders about the start of DCI. I don't know if you have this video, but it is excellent information. It might be available still from DCI.
  15. Contact Richard Saucedo at the Carmel High School Band website. He has replied to me before. I believe he would help you out. If you don't contact him there, try Hal Leonard. He writes for them. Best of luck!
  16. Great stuff! My only complaint is that they don't have the 2007 performances available to watch. Otherwise, great value. Dennis
  17. Agreed. When I didn't make my first choice back in 1979, I marched with another corps that I wasn't as familiar with. Turned out to be a great decision. That corps turned out to be the Cavaliers. I'm proud of my short, but memorable time with such a great organization. Only regret is not marching longer. I wish I could have marched another 2 years. My advice to those who don't make their first choice is to try another. Time flies by too fast and you will never get those years back.
  18. I would also have to agree with 1993 Star of Indiana. My other two corps that I think are worth mentioning is 1980 27th Lancers, and 1989 Phantom Regiment. All great shows!
  19. Still no Marty Hurley. This is sad too. I'm a big fan of Marty and his accomplishments. He had some great lines with Phantom Regiment and did much for the future of marching percussion. Hopefully, next year this will happen.
  20. I cannot believe that Marty Hurley is not in the DCI Hall of Fame. He had some great drumlines with Phantom Regiment and several other corps. What gives? Any ideas?
  21. To DCA corps directors, How do you pay for your arrangers and designers? Do you have a legal agreement? Do you pay them cash, check, wiring money? What is the procedure that your corps uses? Thanks, Dennis
  22. Hey guys, Here is a link to a mp3 of the arrangement I did for the Presidents. If any of you are from the Tennessee area, including states next door, please consider joining them for the summer. The music is fun and they are a great group of people. Enjoy! Dennis Eveland composer/arranger Dixie/Rocky Top
  23. I would like to add that with the way gas prices are, college expenses, etc., it might be very reasonable and logical to march with a DCA corps. The Presidents gives many of you who want to march, but cannot afford a DCI corps, the opportunity to do so. The next practice will be Saturday April 19th. Dennis
  24. Wow, a lot more than I paid marching. Of course, that was 29 years ago. Inflation.
