  1. I personally saw the raw cut finals week, and from what I hear, this more recent cut is on another level. Very engaging, effective, and it captures drum corps right on, but in its own unique, and sophisticated way. From what I heard from people directly involved, it's very top level, high quality stuff. The makers of this movie took it very seriously and have really immersed themselves in it, and from all I have heard, it has really paid off.
  2. Wow, very cool, very nice pick ups for the Bluecoats, Michael Grey is amazing, he's a true artist, just what Blue and DCI need in there. The new colorguard guy, if he can do what he did with SCV should be amazing, and while I don't know much about the drill writer, I'm sure he was highly recommended. Very cool Bluecoats, very excited to see what they do next year.
  3. North Austin here, a couple miles north of the other Bari Steve
  4. The ballad moment in itself puts 08 ahead of 07 in my opinion. I think there are several aspects of this years show that are of higher quality than last year. I'm more excited than worried, Blue does better as the underdog, 05 corps was up to 4 points behind The Scouts at one point at a head to head contest, didn't beat them until finals night. I'm excited to see the Bluecoats the last couple of weeks of tour (especially finals week). BTW, Nobody talks about that ballad moment, I thought it stood out substantially as the best moment of the night on the Madison Webcast, it was simply jaw dropping. (yes, I'm a big homer)
  5. Live Iguanas would do the trick for sure, also performing at night would be a big help. Without a night performance, it's only "Iguanas", the Scouts need to score higher to perform later, to make real the Night of the Iguana.
  6. The show is OBVIOUSLY a hybrid of the two movies Rocky III and On The Waterfront, they use music from both of them, so OBVIOUSLY the show has to be about these two movies. There is also a little bit of 'A Mighty Wind' with the folk music and the singing n such. So basically, Rocky III, On The Waterfront, and A Mighty Wind. I hope this clears things up.
  7. They are scoring very well with what they need to (GE), and they have tons of room to grow in another caption (visual Ensemble), and I have a feeling that once they start judging visual performance, Blue will do well in that caption, just a gut feeling of mine. Anyway, when the show cleans up, that already high GE score also gets exponetially(sp?) higher, as well as the Ensemble score getting higher. Blue has set themselves up perfectly for the show to grow and carry them along with it. Can't expect them to do the same old thing and expect a different result, Blue is trying something different this year, the scores reflect that, I personally like where blue is sitting right now. They have good scores where they need it, and they have plenty of room to grow with an excellent staff that knows how to get them there. Lots of corps doing lots of great things this year, not here to say so and so is going to beat so and so. All I am saying is I see Bluecoats low vis scores don't bother me at all right now, I'm more impressed that they are conveying that high of a GE score with the drill as dirty as it is. That actually makes me excited. Steve
  8. 1 The Cavaliers 78.600 2 Phantom Regiment 76.700 3 Carolina Crown 75.400 4 Bluecoats 74.700 5 Spirit 69.200 6 Glassmen 69.000 7 Colts 68.700 8 Madison Scouts 65.600
  9. A little light on the Bluecoats commentary, but other than that, I really appreciate you doing it, thanks.
  10. Buddy Holly, last years leads were pitiful, especially that ginger that marched, you know, the guy on all the Bluecoats Uni logos, that big ginger was awful. Thank god they are better this year.
  11. To each their own, we all have our own motivations to be successful, nobody is wrong and vise versa IMO. Just glad so many organizations are finding success this year.
  12. Wow Crown, sounds good, no doubt they will be successful this year, such a well run organization, but set apart by its extremely talented and intelligent design staff, way to push the envelope and try new (relativity) things, 1812 is going to be incredible, I just simply can't wait to hear it.
  13. Wow, that sound extremely interesting, tons of potential, very excited to see it.
  14. I know this is very OT, but I showed The Cadets 07 show to a class of 4th graders (I'm student teaching right now for All-Level music certification) and they absolutely loved it, nobody said anything about the narration, although they did laugh when that goofy guy in the balled says "DRUM CORPS" all awkwardly, but other than that, one student expressed "I didn't know marching shows were about things." This doesn't reflect my personal beliefs, I'd rather they just do a show with playing, but not a single child complained. They also learned how to do across the floors doing a roll step playing recorders, it was too much fun.
  15. Haha, wow, I have a feeling this show is going to be amazing, these guys know how to pick their music.
  16. Wow, very cool picks for Phantom! Now I'm really looking forward to hearing this show.
  17. Lets see if I can remember, I think I voted as follows Cadets 05 (Wow, Phenomenal drill, phenomenal arranging, great performance) Bluecoats 05 (my age out which also happens to be my favorite year for Blue) Phantom 06 Bluecoats 07 (Gotta give props to some amazingly talented members) Crown 07 (my favorite show of the year) Devils 07 (Ultra Intense, super cool opener)
  18. Compared to early recordings of years past, this is VERY good. I'm impressed, should be cool.
  19. Is King Low Brass worth that trumpet/mello sound? IMO, no, it's not. Crowns hornline improved drastically in 2007, I believe with help from Yamaha. I understand the King Euphs deliver a great, deep, pure sound, but thats about all King has going for it. Dynasty Percussion for Phantom, probably to help alleviate some of that debt, Dynasty offered better sponsorship I'm assuming. Now Phantom switching to Jupiter Horns, hah, that'd be interesting.
  20. Late 90's SCV for sure, Intense music, drill, visual approach, IMO just some great drum corps.
  21. Really good question, of that list, I would have to go with the Music Shows, but idealy, If somebody could put together a show about that told a story and had a general idea (phantom 05, since that show was used an example, was close to that), I think that would be ideal. Crown this year kind of told a story and also had an idea, and the music itself also sort of told a story (that one may have been a stretch), I think Crowns show design was a very good balance of all those ideas. Shows that contain consistent ideas, as well as arranging the music as to where it can tell a story, combined most importantly with high performance standards will find themselves most successful. Once again, very cool thread to start.
