  1. I think this is exactly what they're going to do. This has been their MO in recent years (2006, 2008) and I have a feeling the rights for Corigliano's music might be out of their league. He's a big-time sought-after* composer these days. They might be able to use one Corigliano piece and weave it amongst other things to portray the theme they want. As always, idle speculation. * OMG double hyphenated adjectives?
  2. Drum corps should be military. Just 6 great pieces of music and precise, symmetrical drill. No prancing, no themes, no theatrics, no comedy, and absolutely not freakin' magic tricks. Except when those things are ok.
  3. Yea modern corps staffs are such lazy ########. They just sit on lawn chairs on the sideline for 3 and then BAM! Jim Ott! Especially with Cadets.
  4. Um, no? WTF? They're probably taking one or two from guard, one or two from the percussion (does one less snare and one less rack player in the pit really make a difference?)...nothing too drastic. Not like 1986 when they drastically sacrificed the guard for 84 horns.
  5. Thanks Mikey. I remember Gino wanted 66 in '06 but it didn't work out. You prolly don't remember me but I had a set next to you in The Garden, hehe. Jon Hollis Cadets Tuba '06
  6. If you read the actual article on YEA.org, they say some interesting things about the show design and why they are marching 80 horns: http://www.yea.org/site/News2?page=NewsArt...ws_iv_ctrl=1021 To summarize, the corps will be split in 2 sections for the 2nd piece (I'm guessing a rumble? Speculation) and five sections for the closer (Speculation again, but maybe "Tonight" with each section playing something different, like the original; i.e. Tony and Maria singing about their love, Jets and Sharks singing about their love for stabbing each other, etc)
  7. Actually, I believe the 2007 corps had 66 horns...can anyone confirm? Interesting stuff... I lol'd at loud noises, even though Steve Carrell is not funny.
  8. These eyes....cry every night...for you... <wah wow>
  9. Boo, just brass warmup. I have done that enough times in my life, I don't need to watch it.
  10. Some worsts: In 2004 we (Cap Reg) rehearsed at F.L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kansas. Our morning block was on a lower football practice field that had ditches 3 inches deep for yardlines, complete with water in them. The rest of the day was wisely moved to the parking lot. Later that summer, our field for the Lynn, MA show was unmowed grass with several large, deep holes, which we marked with orange cones. Even better was when a (literally) crazy old man with a walker made his way diagonally across the field in the middle of rehearsal, oblivious to all of us. Our finals rehearsal site in 2006 (Cadets): The grass was extremely long and thick, and after spending a lot of time on turf that summer, it was pretty brutal. In terms of shows, Fairfield, OH is pretty crap. The field is bumpy with long grass, and the stands are about 5 rows high. What's the point? Some bests: Invesco Field at Mile High and Columbus Crew stadium. Major hype on the nice fields and I think Invesco was one of the best finals stadiums ever. Douglas County HS in Castle Rock, Colorado--rehearsed there for a few days before Drums Along the Rockies in 2006. Brand new school and turf field on a bluff overlooking Castle Rock and the town; you could see for miles behind the field and watch distant thunderstorms rolling through. The stadium at Tennessee Tech in 2006: They still had the old-school carpet turf, and it was one of the nicest, easiest surfaces of my marching career. We got to rehearse there (show site for Masters of the Summer Music Games) and it was a big hype, and we had a great rehearsal. We put down masking tape for tick marks and some drill spots, and when we got on the field we noticed that we could still see where they had been! The masking tape left residue. We joked about being disqualified for cheating...too bad we got rained out anyway.
  11. Not that I agree with the other guy but jesus Perry S, the THIS!!! NOT THIS!!! is getting really old.
  12. Casa Bonita, Casa Bonita, food and fun in a festive atmosphere...
  13. And even George Hopkins--yes, that GEORGE HOPKINS, the worst person who ever lived, the Joseph Stalin of drum corps...said that having the pieces seemlessly transition between each other was not worth sacrificing the crowd response time, and was ultimately a mistake.
  14. So true. I mean, no young people were passionate supporters and volunteers for Barack Obama.
  15. One more vote for "DCP is a joke." In 2005 one of my friends had DCP show reviews sent to her so we could read them on the bus and LOL.
  16. Yea, I was basically saying what Godzilla thought I was saying. People make blanket statements like "drum corps is too theatrical, I hate all that stuff" but at the same time go ape#### over shows like SCV '89 and Spartacus, etc. It's the problems with making big broad statements like that.
  17. Every drum corps audience HATES themes. Unless they're Phantom of the Opera. Or Spartacus.
  18. I don't think a show has to stop every 3 minutes for applause to be effective/appeal to the audience. Just because the crowd didn't/couldn't applaud doesn't mean they didn't enjoy the show/get anything out of it.
  19. There aren't enough roll-eyes smilies in the internet to properly respond to this.
