  1. First of all, congrats on forming a corps in Mobile. There is definitely a practically untapped talent pool there and there is a LOT of potential for growth, both junior and all age. I wish you the best of luck and success. I have to agree with Sam here. A key rule of marketing is to differentiate yourself and IMO, the term "Magic" could easily be confused with the other Magic. Besides, there are other names or references from Mobile's culture and history (besides azalea) that could be used to name the corps. Sam also made a great point about Magic's financial woes being a matter of public record. Something to think about. Again, congrats on forming the corps and may you have great success. In case you missed it in John's posts, here is the corps website. Magic of Mobile
  2. No problem and no need to keep your mouth shut. What are some of your selections? There were a lot of West Coast corps during your time who couldn't afford to travel to DCI. Which ones had shows that would have made an impact if they could have travelled?
  3. I got the point and understand yours. I went by shows for individual years and from a member's standpoint, such as the rookouts from these corps from those years. Just wanted to make sure they were counted.
  4. To name a few... 1978 Boston Crusaders 1978 Anaheim Kingsmen 1979 Crossmen 1981 Defenders 1981 Memphis Blues 1982 & 1983 Geneseo Knights 1982 & 1983 Troopers 1983 Avant Garde 1987 Dutch Boy 2000 Southwind 2006 Colts There are more, but this is enough for now.
  5. The placements were interesting. I was surprised the 2005 and 2007 champions placed so low in the fan judging. The sneak peek was nice. I'm looking forward to seeing this year's Spartacus show. The first tune they are playing is one we played in 1982, Mourning/Uprising. Didn't recognize the ones toward the end. Also, in the video snippet from our 1982 show, I'm in the arc, second to the left off the 50.
  6. My all time low score was with the 1978 Bleu Raeders. On July 4, 1978, in Schaumburg, IL, the Guardsmen's home show, we scored a whopping 17.50. Our drumline zeroed out. The horns didn't fare too much better. The worst I ever placed at DCI was 16th in Class A, again with the 1978 Bleu Raeders. We scored a season high 28.45 that show.
  7. Elsa's Procession To the Cathedral and 1812 Overture from 1983 and 1984...using the old bugle parts.
  8. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if two corps tie for 12th in Semi-Finals, both corps would be allowed to participate in Finals. There was only one runoff done to break a tie that I know of, and that was for the 1982 DCM Championship.
  9. I doubt that change will happen. Remember, both of the previous Spartacus shows pulled it off with all girls. But having guys in the guard will add a needed element to the presentation.
  10. I remember marching like that. As good as it looks when done right, my knees are happy it's not required anymore.
  11. How about that! We competed in that show. Scored a whopping 27 that day.
  12. That quote was only from the movie and was never part of the story when we performed Spartacus, but I hope they do win with this show.
  13. As am I, but still don't remember seeing any video cameras that day.
  14. Wish I could have been home to see WGM in the Mardi Gras parades.
  15. Hey, I used to be a RadioShack manager. Those crappy wappy tape recorders were pretty reliable. Back when I was still in junior corps, I used them to record drum corps shows, too. Finally got some of those recordings digitized a couple of years ago. Reliable, yes. Did they create a good quality audio recording back then....uh, no. Actually, the recordings on my 1974 model sound like the gain was set way too high. My next tape recorder was a lot better, but sadly, I lost many of those recordings.
  16. Actually, several years ago I e-mailed DCI about this subject (wish I still had the e-mail). A representative of DCI replied and stated in no uncertain terms DCI had no intention to sell copies of the old Ken Lobold recordings. But this did happen several years ago and for all we know, DCI could be reconsidering this issue. Otherwise, audiodb has a good point about licensing. Because of the money involved, it would take some investment to get permission from those who own the rights to the original tunes to sell the recordings. If that can be done, releasing them as APDs is a great idea. Over the years, there were some great performances and audience response in contests other than DCI Finals, Prelims, etc. For example, I would love a recording of our 1982 DCM Run-off performance. Now that DCI has had commercial success with the APDs, this is an opportunity whose time has come.
  17. This was discussed on several threads over the years. The old audio recordings you're talking about were not DCI recordings, but Ken Kobold recordings. We used to order them from him directly. After Kobold died, he left all of his recordings to DCI. Several times since DCP came into existence, drum corps alumni and fans asked DCI if or when they will sell copies of these recordings and the word is they have no intention of releasing these recordings for sale. You're welcomed to ask DCI again if you'd like.
  18. Louisiana Southernaires. We formed in April 1981 and won the 1981 DCI Class A Championship. The corps went down from there, 42nd in Open Class in 1982, to not fielding a corps in 1983.
  19. There were quite a few rehearsal ticks. Wish I could see them in Rockford.
  20. They will release their exact repertoire when they do. They haven't told us alumni anything either and having performed in the 1982 Spartacus show, I'd love to know exactly what they're playing, but have to be patient. I do look forward to seeing them, regardless.
  21. Gotta show some love to my corps brothers and sisters, Phantom Regiment 1982 and 1983.
  22. It seems we all know somebody who lies about their corps experience, IF they even have any. This is sad. I guess some people want to try to be more than what they think they are and they believe lying about their corps experience will do it. Sad.
