Crown is Going to Win
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to ajlemm's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Hmmmm, let me think about it..... NO! As we used to say back in the day; the East is nice, but WEST is best. -
What defines a Drum and Bugle Corps?
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to Mello Dude's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
HA! "silvertrombone", bet you wouldn't say that to their face. -
In your opinion...

Would you really leave the activity
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to Elmo Blatch's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
If they allow woodwinds I wouldn't leave Drum Corps, it would be Drum Corps that left me. -

The center Rifle you speak of is Katie Hill. She was, and I'm sure still is, absolutely gorgeous. -

Anaheim Kingsmen Rifle Line, 1977 Dang, somebody did not waste any time. -
Big drops by the guard

May I take this opportunity to say this was a fate never suffered by the Anaheim Kingsmen rifle line.......? Thank you very much. -
Ugh! I just came to this realization...

The "Greatest Marching Band in the History of the Universe" (e.g. University of Southern California) would never compete in DCI because their Director, Art Bartner, hates Drum Corps. Oh, and you forgot to add the Kingsmen to the top three. -
Stanley Knob is really spelled Stanley Knaub (RIP). Stanley taught SCV - both guard and M&M, helped formed WGI. His ex-wife Debbie marched SCV and taught 27th during the winter of 76-77. Staney also marched with the Kingsmen as a mellophone in (at least) 1970 & 1971. He left Kingsmen and went to SCV in 1972 (opps). He taught the Kingsmen guard at various points. The opening flag/rife OTL file the Kingsmen guard did in 1973, and in 2007 by the Kingsmen Alumni Corps, was designed by Stanley. He was taken far too soon.

Does Drum Corps Build Character?
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to steelchops's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
No, it reveals it. -
I remember people complaining back in the mid-70's when uniform inspections were done away with. Those who march and instruct now should dictate what the style and rules are. It's their activity now and up to them. And up to us if we want to watch it, or support it.

Your attitude is coming across loud and clear, but probably not the one you intended to convey.

Not all of us, just the rifle line.

Blue Devils - Great Job

I'm shocked they did not win. I guess 5th place in drums was their downfall. Nevertheless, congratulations to Phantom and their fans. -
HOLY NAME CADETS to return in 2009

I understand, but I like it nonetheless for the reasons stated. -
HOLY NAME CADETS to return in 2009
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to JerseyBoy_'s topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
How refreshing. In an age where most segments of society outside the church do everything they can to distance themselves from God and any form of religion, the Cadets embrace it. Even if it is only for one year, and a symbolic gesture, I applaud them. -
Why are the Corps bashing?
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to KiltieKemo06's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
It is the nature of ALL open Internet message boards in general where competition is involved. Anyone can be brave hiding anonymously behind a keyboard. -
I’m knocking on the door of being 50 years old and I attribute my various bouts of skin cancer due to my years in Drum Corps. Too many 10 to 10 practices in the hot sun wearing only cut-off Levis, tube-socks and tennis shoes caught up with me. DCI should have Banana Boat, Coppertone, or some other sun screen manufacturer as a corporate sponsor.

Do 50 straight fan-spins on the left arm, 50 on the right arm, then do it again. Progress to 100 on each arm. Beginers need to get that down because all rifel work starts from there.

To me, most "rifle work" today looks like baton work.

Parents Speak Up
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to kathymom's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
There is a sizeable faction of drum corps fans who believe the director of your son's corps is hell-bent on ruining the activity. As a result, they take it out on his corps from the stands. Sending an e-mail to Mr. Hopkins instead would be the mature thing to do but............well; those people you are describing are not that. If this is the worst thing that ever "happens" to your son, he's gonna have a pretty good life. He could be in Fallujah where threats to his life are real instead of imaginary. -
I’m on the outside and I kind of like it actually. I marched in the Anaheim Kingsmen in their 70’s-glory days and the Kingsmen Alumni Corps last summer at D.C.I. It was a privilege not many get, and to relive my youth and put that uniform on again I’ll be forever grateful. On the other hand, it was a HELL of a lot of work and I was sore until Christmas. Maybe if I were single I’d drive up and join the Renegades.

Lesser Known Corps
greggmanX-Kingsmen replied to Dylan Ford's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Ohhhhh, I feel old. Blue Stars "lesser known".....! They almost beat us in finals in 1972. Anyway, good luck and may you get to march with whomever you choose. -
Does it make sense to keep increasing the size limit of corps when the number of corps overall is decreasing, and expect the activity as we know it to remain healthy? Increasing the size of corps is good if you’re a top-tier corps, but not-so-much for everybody else. The rich get richer and the poor, poorer. Who is going to want to join a local in-state corps if they can join one of the perennial DCI contenders? The local in-state corps are how drum corps began. If you eliminate them by making it attractive to go somewhere else what will we have left? Soon it won’t make sense to have DCI prelims; go straight to Finals because there will only be seven, or eight, 225 member corps. Then the argument to allow woodwinds in drum corps will grow even stronger because “they” will point to the need for more members to be allowed into the activity. It is very transparent to me.
