  1. "Connubial eloquence" is my new favorite phrase. I'm going to use it all the time.
  2. Yes, both the Rockford and Meadowlands show starts were delayed.
  3. I heard from a highly placed source that The Cavaliers scored 102, Blue Devils got a 55.9, Crossmen got 12 bonus points because they're from Texas, Blue Stars scored Pi and SCV received a negative 4. (Points to be deducted from their first score which exceeds +4.) Phantom did not receive a score, but were awarded a donkey as a consolation prize. It's going to be an interesting season!
  4. That's exactly what many already do. Start? Where have you been? So Cal bands have been predominantly parent funded for decades.
  5. Burt Bacharach and Hal David were a very popular and successful songwrinting team in the 60/70s - well before you were born.
  6. Teach both timing and technique from the beginning. Kids learn differently and some take time to get things figured out. If you wait until they can achieve one before you start teaching the other your limiting their time and some may never get to where you want them. Every time you work marching fundamentals mix in exercises that focus on timing and technique so they get some of each. Gradually they will start to integrate the two. As for watching the DM, I would first talk with your music staff and find out whether they emphasize watching or listening (to the battery) for time. Then build the technique program around whichever method they'll using in the show.
  7. I don't see the problem here. And, in my experience, most drum corps kids are much more motivated than most bands kids. The fact that it's a generalization and not quantifiable doesn't make it untrue.
  8. Prior experience as an acrobat or clown isn't the issue. You do need people with some working knowledge of what the activity is and what the interests of all the different stakeholders are. Since there is no "real world" parallel to our little club, that perspective needs to come from the inside. (I'm not saying that leadership needs to be restricted to insiders, but there needs to be a presence among the governing body.)
  9. And Jamey Thompson is back which should do a lot to stabilize the visual package.
  10. Yeah, it's really wide. I can see about 2/3 of the page at a time. It looks like your header type may be the problem. Make it about half the size it is now and see what happens.
  11. But you still get to see BD and SCV late season, along with pretty much every other corps. In California there are years that we ONLY see California corps and ONLY in late June/early July. That's it. There is NO late season drum corps in the west. I fully understand the cost issue, but there are far more opportunities to see drum corps in the eastern half of the country than there are in the west.
  12. Check out SongMarker in the iPhone app store. It allows you to set and name marker points in any song in your iTunes library. It will save you tons of time scanning through songs to start at the point you need. Very cool app!
  13. I believe fsubone was referring to rankings (in this case, most likely between 8th and 9th place), not scores. And, yes, it is true that as rounds get smaller the number range tends to expand, meaning the top usually goes up and the bottom goes down. It has to do with contest dynamics and it's been going on for decades.
  14. a) there is no new "division". B) How can there be slotting or competitive advantage in the off-season when there is no competition?
  15. You seem to be saying, with certainty, that TOC corps have been granted a competitive advantage over non-TOC corps, which is something that can't be "known" until after the season is underway (or over). I think some people are making this TOC thing out to be more than what it is.
  16. 2(Vis GE) + 3(Vis Perf) + 4(Vis Ens) + 4(Guard) = 1? Really? I think it probably had more to do with the fact that they won every music caption, except for a 2nd in brass.
  17. Music for All Summer Symposium, presented by Yamaha June 20-25, 2011 Leadership Weekend Experience: June 18-20 Ball State University, Muncie, IN The drum corps show is on June 24.
  18. In those days corps did not travel all summer the way they do now. In fact, it was The Cadets who introduced the "all-summer" touring model around 1984/85.
  19. This is totally irrelevant to a discussion about uniforms. There's no need to dredge all that up again in here.
  20. Actually, in this case, it is not tax-deductible. In the eyes of the government, it is the individual member who benefits, not the 501c3. If you donate to a general fund it is deductible.
  21. It would be a radically different look from the military-ish type of uniforms we're accustomed to. Acceptance would depend on people's desire/ability to let go of certain expectations of what drum corps is/isn't. I'd rather see a group really go for it than the kind of hybrid Crown wore last year. A shirt and vest with a shako never looked right to me.
  22. just curious-what aspect(s) went too far for you?
  23. I believe he was referring to comments made by people he knows personally, not posts here on the planet.
