  1. Oh, really, they're using capes this year? Just opened the link above. Fascinating.
  2. "SULTRY, SULTRY, SULTRY, on a Saturday night, it's big, bad and BLUE"
  3. I agree wholeheartedly. I bet there are some happy faces on the bus tonight. I hope they can't WAIT to get to the practice field!
  4. Usually, finishing 13th is only bad if you've been in Finals for several years beforehand. However, there are several corps that have recently fallen out of finals and have made it back in, and stayed on an even financial footing. I think that it was more a kiss of death in the 70s and 80s when corps were operating on a TOTAL shoestring - so 13th might be the difference between earning X amount of dollars and Y amount of dollars the next year - meaning that it was impossible to pay for anything, meaning... DCI corps are generally - GENERALLY - on better financial footing these days.
  5. You ain't kidding. .025 between Cavies and Cadets? That's unbelievable. Hey, how excited the Colts must be to be in 10th. Very nice for them. They are not all that far behind BK, and I really enjoyed BK in Hershey. I hope they're able to maintain.
  6. Flag, Rifle, Sabre, Drum Major, Dr. Beat, Drill, Pass-Through, Company Front, Follow-the-Leader, Soprano
  7. Umm...OK. Brandt says he's done every year since 1972...with the exception of 1982(?) So why do we not believe him? Why would he lie?
  8. I love Paul, too. Just for the record, his last name is spelled "Cain" He was known as "P.C." in his tour managing days with Xmen.
  9. CAROLINA CROWN, are you listening? Actually, I think BD could do a kick-butt version of this, too. They have that angry loud sound. They've actually quoted Barber's Medea I think more than once, but 96 in the closer is what I can remember. Frankly, I think Star defined Belshazzar's Feast. I frankly can't imagine any hornline being better able to "vocalize" the choral sound of that piece. It is one of the most stunning interpretations in drum corps history.
  10. Something to remember...1992 was the summer after the "Patriotic Celebration" World Championships which themselves followed a quick-and-easy Persian Gulf War. In fall 1991 the idea of a patriotic show might have seemed like a slam-dunk. Other patriotic shows in the recent past - Cadets 1995, 2002; Bluecoats 1995; Boston 2002; Troopers, well, every year... Also, guard did not have its own caption back then, as many of you well know...
  11. This is tough. None of these shows stood out head and shoulders above the other championship shows. I picked Star 91, but 94 Devs and 95 Cavies are very good as well. I think the high votes for Phantom 96 and SCV 99 are sentimental.
  12. Hottest day on my tour was... Stillwater, Minnesota in August. 105 if it was above freezing.
  13. Actually, the rabbit was here this year as well. Wonder if it was the same one? Maybe he really likes drum corps?
  14. This is a broader problem in society. I have heard it stated that it is because people have lost trust in the idea that truth can be arrived at by a shared appeal to reason. Debate on the basis of reason used to be the way that politics, religion, etc. were discussed. With the loss of trust in reason has come appeals to emotion and the manipulation of words to arrive at a pre-determined conclusion which is actually arrived at by non-rational means. This is often a disguised power-grab for whatever version of justice you happen to agree with. Notice that the word "rhetoric" is now a perjorative. It's no longer something that can employed to appeal to or reveal the truth, it's a manipulation of your thoughts for some end, usually power. Rhetoric is also exclusively what the other side engages in, or "spin," while your side is always speaking what really is happening. :)
