  1. You know what would be cool? Maybe combine the threads with opening and have a pinned 'corps openings' thread. Not trying to infringe on the mods territory here--but this could be a big help. Lots of corps still have opening this time of year.
  2. <open pontification> I really think amplifying the pits is OK, because it enables the pit to play with a more "concert" sound, but beyond that, not a fan. I'm one for thinking that it's ok for BOA and DCI to be different. </end>
  3. I think I agree with the concept, but I also think you'd be surprised at how many kids come in with NO experience.
  4. In my experience, most corps (that don't have a show sitting on the shelf in November) do a movement per camp, with the percussion book trailing by one camp. Finishing usually in April or May. I know some top 12 corps wouldn't get their closers until move-in in the past.
  5. Nice. I thought Freddy Martin was working with Spirit. Good get for Boston
  6. Yeah...sometimes it bugs me when they just link back to their facebook pages. I mean, if I'm already on fb, what's the point of trying to bring me back there?
  7. Was sitting here wondering--who has the best and/or most active Twitter accounts? And do you prefer it to be marketing/redirecting/advertising, or just random thoughts and updates?
  8. Maybe it's just me, but it strikes me as a "countdown" for the summer. Coming to theaters around the time that corps are either having their last camp or getting ready for move-in, it's a nice prep to signal the long winter, devoid of drum corps performances is coming to an end, and we're "counting down" the days until the first show. But that could just be me. I'm a fan.
  9. My .02? It won't make a difference. But shame on any of you for finding fault here, only because what it says to me is that DCI is making an effort to listen to and respond to the fans' concerns, which should be appreciated. They're doing what many have asked, begged, demanded. Give them just a little bit of credit, please! Or don't. Your call. But when you incessantly complain about one scenario, and then complain about the opposite, your argument loses credence and you just seem like a complainer.
  10. I thought I read in another thread that Boston was only fielding 30 kids. Oh well. I guess we'll find out on June 26. Good point, OP. Makes sense!
  11. I can't believe no one has suggested this yet; this thought came to me last night when I was watching Evgeni Plushenko's short program. Wouldn't it be interesting if he took his minute of warmup time before the music started to do some flips and other flashy tricks that aren't allowed...just to win over the crowd. And then do his required elements. Sound familiar? :-)
  12. Thanks for answering my question re: John Hord. I appreciate it.
  13. Excuse my ignorance, but what's the Gulf War/Bluecoats piece? Thanks!
  14. Strongly agree. What I don't understand, and with all due respect to Mr. Becker, is why folks feel like we have to "evolve" past the military roots. Showing some form of tradition does not mean you are backwards, or anti-progress.
  15. Space chords can also help teach how to tune a dissonant chord. We are used to hearing major triads and open fifths, but you can tune dissonance, too. Donny is right--that it's incredibly easy to play them not well, but just like controlling soft dynamics can help you play louder dynamics, controlling dissonance can help with consonance. It also sounds pretty #### cool.
  16. Audiodb, I think craiga was just saying that we might look through glasses that are a bit too rose-colored sometimes when lamenting the loss of ### corps. Based on your rebuttal(s), I'd bet you two pretty much agree that the fault is somewhere in the middle. One thing though; Jersey Surf, Academy, and a handful of the CA World Class corps do not participate in the full tour and they have an equal voice to any corps in the top 12, according to the current DCI by-laws. If you were referencing the past DCI structure, then you are correct.
  17. Good for Madison for having the cojones (can I say cojones?) to put that video up. Not bad playing either--you can hear hints of what this will become, and that's all you need in December. Again, good for them.
  18. Bump for a Merry Christmas! They played this at midnight mass last night and I thought of this recording.
  19. Thanks for peeing in the Cheerios. You're right, there are a couple bad attacks, and some intonation issues--good for you for pointing that out. I'd put it in 9th place of all the Christmas tunes corps released this week. I bet you're the guy who criticizes stick heights on June 19th too, eh? Now we know how you feel. I think it's great that a corps did something for the fans, and in the spirit of the season. I will listen to it again, and enjoy it. Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks Boston!
  20. You're right--they'd probably melt through them anyway, what with their heat and all.
  21. Alaskan Heat - the original endorsers of the plastic mouthpiece.
