  1. Pretty well said. I am particularly of the opinion that the microphone stuff is repulsive. There have been many soloists through the years that certainly did not need microphones. If you can find a good recording of the Royal Airs playing "It was a Very Good Year" or "Shadow of Your Smile", give it a listen. Listen to the soloists. Go ahead, laugh, but not until you hear it. Of course that was a while back. The point being that if those guys did not need mics why do the folks need it now? If we are using this opportunity to spout our opinion, then I have another thought. The ballad-give me a break. I wonder how thousands of dollars of battery equipment is doing nothing while the horn line and guard do their thing. What a waste of money and talent of the battery players as they march around doing who knows what. And last, but not least, and here is the one to get someone riled. Drum line. Line it up on the sideline on the '50' and 'throw it down'. This is drum corps! I know the response, "It's now the flow of the music transitioning from one segment to another via percussion". I don't care about the flow. I want to see the guys flail. Get the pit out of the way for a minute and let them display their skills. Of course, the members are not responsible for the product. But, the members are to be commended for their hard work. They do well. It's the "evolving" and design work that I speak to. And there is my rant. All done now.
  2. And speaking of the season...Is there a phone umber I can call to ask if there are any decent seats available for the championship on Labor Day weekend in Rochester? My email: snarexyz@yahoo.com Thanks.
  3. Have to really appreciate that guard uniform. I tend to like the traditional look.
  4. Yup. Warm up fine on basic instruments. Then hit it. Well said.
  5. In my humble opinion, there's nothing like hearing the Cabs rip a Spanish tune in a year when the horn line is at the top of their game and squeaky clean with punch.
  6. Yeah, that's a lot of ground to make up to be honest. The short season does not help matters.
  7. Well, interesting placement. Even though there were just 3 corps the Cavaliers placed last. Wonder if the Cavies have ever placed last in a contest? Sheesh.
  8. Not any big deal.... but....the very first Blue Star photo is not from the 70's. It's 1969, the beginning of the Odd Couple. One snare played a 4 count standard 'ride' on the big cymbals and another played a pattern on snare and triple drum and then the song started. The lone snare is me and I played something at the start. Another one of those 'big' 3 man snare lines. Good photo sequence someone put together.
  9. Well said. Thanks. My dad fought with the 83rd division in Europe, WWII.
  10. Not much of a show with 3 corps. I wouldn't go. I don't get it anyway...this g7 thing.
  11. You beat me to it. Anyone remember their orange sticks at McCormick Place? I'm pretty sure I saw orange sticks that day. Of course I could be wrong.
  12. 1965. Viroqua, Wisconsin. I was there with the Blue Stars to perform in exhibition because we were a parade corps our first year out. Eau Clarie Boys were there. Cedar Rapids Grenediers were there. Seems like I remember the Grenediers having a rather large snare line that year. Eau Clarie Boys played 'Tie me Kangaroo Down Sport' if I'm not mistaken. Gosh, so many corps in those days. What fun. Hope I'm right on this with Cedar Rapids.
  13. I think that might be Rod Goodhart. And the other I think would be Bob _________ ? gosh, can't remember. I'm almost absolutely certain it's him. Used to wear fluorescent socks at prelims. I was there watching that night. We were a first year parade corps and competed the next season (Blue Stars). I remember visiting the Chicago zoo and the museum before the show.
