  1. I've had dozens of horrible sunburns from drum corps, some of which were so bad I couldn't even put a shirt on, so this is pretty much guaranteed for me if this video is real. Is there any way I can prepare?
  2. I was wondering what the rules on instrument keys are in Drum Corps Japan and Drum Corps Europe. Are corps still required to use G bugles in those circuits?
  3. The status of the DVD has changed. Seems whatever problem they had has been worked out. http://www.box5productions.com/content/shipdates
  4. Not gonna happen. There's a slight possibility that the Spartans could edge them or the Cascades out, but that's still unlikely.
  5. Well like I said probably not a good idea, just something that has run through my head a few times. I don't know why people don't pay attention to the whole post sometimes.
  6. Thanks, but I'm looking for one of just the DCA logo. No year, no championship, nothing but DCA.
  7. I've actually put a little thought into this and structured it a little differently. Basically it would be the same as the old Div I/II/III set-up, but slightly different in how corps are classified. DCI would be split into perfect thirds to make up the classes. The top 3 corps in II and III would move up a class the next year, and the bottom three in I and II would move down a class. That way the classifications are about competitiveness, not money and other stuff. As an added side effect, it would prevent the same corps from consistently medaling in II and III so those groups get more competitive and interesting. That's just what I thought of though, probably not a good idea and definitely not gonna happen. Other than BDB and SCVC dominating every year and never thinking about moving up, I don't see a problem with the way things are now.
  8. There's some great stadiums out in the east too! Like..... MetLife Stadium; East Rutherford, NJ Went there for the TOC show this year and it was amazing! All of the corps sounded great! I was sitting in the front row almost all the way to the left and still got to see most of the action. After the deal at Lucas Oil expires and if finals ever comes back to the east coast, this would be the perfect place for it! Clifton Stadium; Clifton, NJ A historic stadium, and not just because drum corps have been using it for a long time. It's not the most comfortable place for the audience and the performers, but behind it lays a nice park which serves as both a beautiful backdrop for the show and a great place to watch corps in the lot. Sprague Field (Montclair University); Montclair, NJ I know it's not used for drum corps lately, but it's been the home of the North Jersey Band Festival for a very long time (which used to be at Clifton stadium). I've performed in that festival so it has special meaning to me, but the stands are incredibly comfortable and the stadium is in a very beautiful area. I would highly recommend it for drum corps shows! Memorial Stadium; Scranton, PA Another historic stadium, but not in a bad way at all! Pretty much anywhere you sit here will give you a great view of the show, and the field is turf so the performers have a great time as well. There's another field right behind the home stands and the lot where the caravans park is just next to it, so you won't have to go far to see the corps in the lot. Lion Stadium (The College of New Jersey); Ewing, NJ Honestly, I didn't like this stadium at all. The concession area was constantly overcrowded, and there isn't much room in the stands either. At one point in the 2010 show, there was literally an ocean of people standing in the small area between the entrance gate and the stands because there weren't enough seats for everyone. Probably average for Open Class or DCA, but definitely not a good place to watch World Class corps. That's all I've got. I had images but the forum won't let me post them. Hope this helps!
  9. I know most if not all of the top 17 have full spring training and full tours, but what about the World Class corps who don't? Which ones are they and what are their individual schedules like? I'm just curious. And while we're at it, which Open Class corps, if any, have full schedules?
  10. I think you're getting the majority of people's perception of the Bridgemen wrong. I'm definitely not old enough to have ever seen the Bridgemen perform live as a junior corps and when I think of them, I think about how they brought innovation to drum corps and were one of the first to successfully try something new. Folding, disqualification, etc. come second if at all in my mind. In fact, I have friends with no connection to drum corps that know about the Bridgemen. That's how powerful their legacy is.
  11. Wow, you guys seem to be pretty rough on a corps that's doing exactly what they should be doing. The Bridgemen Alumni are exactly what they say they are: an ALUMNI corps. And as an alumni corps that's based off a great corps from DCI's earlier days, I think most people would be disappointed if they played anything other than what they're playing now. If the Star Alumni corps decided to keep playing every year, they probably would never differ much if at all from what they did at semi's, and judging by what some of you have said your opinions of that corps would probably change drastically if that ever happened. That's the difference between alumni corps and regular DCA corps, and why some organizations have both. Leave the change to the DCA corps and let the alumni keep entertaining the nostalgic. Oh and personally I would absolutely LOVE to see the Bridgemen perform at semi's, but not that and Allentown in the same year.
  12. That's actually exactly what I want it for. When I wear my corps jacket around, I want them to know the corps I marched for competed in DCA.
  13. I'm trying to find a patch of the logo below. Does anyone know where I can buy one?
  14. One of my friends who went to the Surf camp said they have somewhere over 80 horns and already finished the opener.
  15. Yeah, please close it. I had a serious question and if people aren't going to give me serious answers it does more damage than good to keep it open.
  16. Thank you! This is the exact kind of logical, serious, factual answer I was looking for!
  17. I asked for no opinions, just facts. I was hoping that people would respect that. Can the mods please close this if it continues?
  18. Didgeridoo. Some consider it a percussion instrument, some consider it an aerophone. Carolina Crown used synthesized didgeridoo tones in 2009, but not an actual didgeridoo. If a drum corps had a real one in the pit, would that break any rules? This is purely out of curiosity. I know of no drum corps that are even considering using one.
  19. Shadow of the Colossus It's a PlayStation 2 game form 2005 that's used as an example to defend the notion that video games can be art, and you'll know why if you do some research on it. Look it up on "the site." The artistic design of the environments and the colossi themselves could make for some amazing guard and choreography designs, and the music is regularly regarded as some of the best in video game history. In particular, these songs stand out to me the most: *The Opened Way *Counterattack *Demise of the Ritual (would make a PERFECT ballad) *In Awe of the Power *A Despair-Filled Farewell The best way to appreciate this music is the play the game, though.
  20. http://www.jerseysurf.org/articles/256/1/Surf-Sets-Sights-on-2012-Lone-Star-State-Debut/Page1.html Surf Sets Sights on 2012 Lone Star State Debut (notice the italics I added throughout the article) While program design plans are underway to propel the Jersey Surf to new competitive heights on the 2012 DCI Tour with its exciting Bridgemania production, intensive logistical planning has also begun, intended to expand the corps' travel schedule to include the DCI Southwestern Regional Championship in San Antonio, TX next July. "It has long been our dream to provide our members with the opportunity to perform before one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable audiences on the DCI Tour at the Alamodome in San Antonio," said Bob Jacobs, Executive Director of the Jersey Surf. "We've had a number of discussions over the past several seasons with our student leadership and corps administration pertaining to further expansion of our tour, and we are excited at the prospect of taking this next growth step, by hopefully adding the Southwestern Regional Championship to our itinerary, along with our regular visits to the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta and Eastern Classic in Allentown. We will have considerable work to do to manage the logistics of this expansion, and of course ensuring that we have adequate funds in place to offset the additional expense, but our intent is to bring our Bridgemania production to a new audience in Texas and the deep south, and to "Share the Love" with tens of thousands of new friends that we've yet to meet!" Although the official Drum Corps International Tour calendar isn't scheduled to be released yet, some of the rough details of the Jersey Surf's 2012 Tour are starting to take shape. The following dates are subject to change and will be finalized and confirmed later this fall. 2012 Jersey Surf Proposed Tour At-a-Glance: June 15 – Spring Training Begins June 23 – Jersey Surf's First Tour Begins July 08 – Friends and Family Day, Alumni Reunion Barbeque, End of First Tour July 13 – Jersey Surf's Second Tour Begins Aug 09 – DCI Prelims, Indianapolis Aug 10 – DCI Semifinals, Indianapolis Aug 11 – DCI World Championship Finals, Indianapolis Aug 12 – Return Home from Second Tour "When we founded the Jersey Surf in 1990, our goal was to provide an alternative to a full-time touring commitment, to make it possible for corps members to participate without having to entirely forgo summer employment, additional classwork or vacation time," Jacobs said. "In our extensive surveys of members over the past several seasons, however, we've learned that those seeking a World Class drum corps experience have a desire and even an expectation to be a part of major events like the San Antonio regional, and they want to spend more time on tour together. We seem to be doing our job of instilling in our members a love of performance, and a tremendous appreciation of the entire touring drum corps experience. It seems logical, then, that we'd want to continue to enhance their experience by creating additional performance opportunities such as traveling through the southern United States and to Texas." Spring Training A Competitive Challenge "With some corps moving in for their spring training sessions in mid-May, we know that we have to be smart about our time management, as we only 'move-in' together for about a week in June," added Jacobs. "The schools in our area of the country are often among the last to dismiss their students for summer vacation, and we've had several instances in the past few years where the corps performed in its first competitive event without a full complement of performers, as some were still finishing up classes, participating in commencement exercises, etc. We don't want our members to miss their final days of high school or college classes in the name of drum corps, and we will continue to honor our commitment to supporting the students and their families in the successful completion of their scholastic responsibilities prior to jumping on board with us." Corps members involved in the planning process are excited about the possibilities of expanding the tour to include the San Antonio regional and the southern US. "We're digging the fact that we're going to have more touring, but still have a break between the two tours," said Jersey Surf's 2012 Drum Major. "Having a few days off between tours enables us to refocus, maybe deal with college paperwork or other things like that, and enjoy a few days of down time at the beach before hitting it hard for the final push to the World Championships. It's like having a full tour with four free days in a row right in the middle of it, and I think that is going to be a great thing for all of us. Many of us are ready to get going now!" The Jersey Surf's complete tour plan will be unveiled at the 2012 Kickoff Weekend, slated for November 18-20 at the Camden County Technical School on Cross Keys Road in Sicklerville, NJ.
  21. The announcement said that all of these guys are on the design team, not the instructional staff. I'm sure other people will be teaching Cadets2 at least most of the time.
  22. In 2010 I was contacted by a staff member of the Glassmen asking to fill a vacant horn spot, but I declined because I was already registered for summer classes and my parents would have never let me fly all the way to Toledo anyway. There is a part of me that wonders what would be different if I took their offer, but I had a fun summer anyway so I don't regret missing out. This year might be a similar story too, as I've decided to age out with a lower-tier World Class corps instead of auditioning for a G8 member like I've been planning all summer. I don't think I will regret this decision either, though.
  23. I'm not totally for that idea. Not that it wouldn't be a great show, but that seems like a marching band kind of thing (literally, that's exactly the kind of show a marching band would do). Besides, I'm a believer in keeping sports and drum corps as separate as possible for obvious reasons. It's bad enough that we use the same field.
  24. I hope they throw in a Colts football game at the end. Then again, that would break the age limit...
  25. I'll have to save this for when August rolls around to see how wrong I am. 1. Carolina Crown 2. Cavaliers 3. Blue Devils 4. Santa Clara Vanguard 5. Cadets 6. Boston Crusaders 7. Bluecoats 8. Blue Knights 9. Phantom Regiment 10. Madison Scouts 11. Spirit of Atlanta 12. Blue Stars 13. Troopers 14. Glassmen 15. Academy 16. Crossmen 17. Colts 18. Teal Sound 19. Jersey Surf 20. Cascades 21. Pacific Crest 22. Mandarins 23. Pioneer I originally put explanations for most of my "odd" choices here, but I took them out to avoid arguments.
