  1. That was just to say that a point is not impossible to make up... even between one show. And not quite 7 points. I don't think BD will be scoring a 98.8 tonight
  2. Just want to point out that in '99, BD was nearly a point ahead of SCV in semis.
  3. I was under the impression that Myron's first drill writing for SCV happened in 1987... at least partially. I could be wrong, however.
  4. I was there for that night in Concord. I remember there being a lot of conspiracy talks about that freak occurance. The basis of that conspiracy was formed around the fact that SCV went undefeated for most of the season (I think it was mid July when we first lost to BD). Anyhow, as I mentioned in a previous post in another thread, when we hit the first impact of our show, we got an explosive standing ovation... at BD's home show.... so the conspiracy theory was that supposedly a BD fan thought, "Oh crap, we're doomed. Let's cut the power!" Of course that isn't true, but it was a funny theory nonetheless. Mad props to them for pulling it off.
  5. That's precisely what I was thinking. Can you imagine life without the interwebs? lol
  6. Very nice write-up, Michael. Wanted to comment on a blurb in your article taken out of context, however "The word from the West Coast early in the season was that audiences were not buying into the minimalism of the Philip Glass opener" I can tell you that during our early-season performance at BD's home show, we got a standing ovation at our first impact of the opener. Not sure where you heard that it wasn't working with the audiences, but I can assure you that it was.
  7. I rarely post.... but, as I know a lot of those kiddos now check these forums on tour, I'd like to give them a tip of my hat and perhaps some advice. I marched during a time when phones with internet access did not exist. It wasn't long ago. I marched SCV from 1998-2001 as a Euphonium/Bari player. But it seems like a lifetime ago. This show reminds me a LOT of 1998. I remember jumping into June rehearsals and listening to the drumline (who had been rehearsing a whole week before us) and thinking.... oh my god.... that is amazing. It was my rookie season (at the age of 17) and I was so starstruck that I almost forgot that I had to bring myself to that level. The drumline was clearly the best section of the corps, and we (the hornline) didn't kid ourselves by ignoring it. Instead, we challenged ourselves -- and so did our staff. We looked at our OUTSTANDING DRUMLINE (who ended up winning drums that year) as a challenge.... they set a bar for the rest of the corps and we chose to reach for it. When the corps was dismissed each night, many of us stayed up during "snack" to rehearse. We chose to work our ##### off because we did not want to be known as a drumline show -- especially since our Copland show was very well written. I know these kids in SCV can bring it. Their staff is top notch. I need to be blunt. What I think is missing (if I may be so bold) is that their section leaders (the true leaders of SCV) need to step up. Demand more of your section. They respect you... they look up to you. They'll jump to the moon and back for you as long as you perform at the same, or even higher, level that you demand. I remember looking at my section leaders and thinking that they WERE Vanguard. Does your section think the same? This is the year that you revive GR's dream. This is the year that you force the activity to remember... the Santa Clara Vanguard is just that: the forefront of the activity.
  8. SCV did Eclipse by Talvin Singh in 2008. It's not an American pop tune... more of Asian underground... but it is considered pop music from where it comes from.
  9. They really should win it. They are far superior to BD, imo.
  10. I tend to avoid complimenting my own corps if I can... but yeah dude..... 1998 SCV. The whole opener was amazing. Also, 2001 SCV's opening statement was great, too. Sorry that I marched those years... don't want to take away from how great the opening statements were.
  11. I haven't read the rest of the thread so this may have already been said.... but I'm willing to bet that Garfield would have marched symmetrical drill in '83 if it hadn't been for SCV in '80. Did Garfield take it to the next level, setting the standard for years to come? Yes. Did they change the activity in the same way that SCV did... or even to the same degree? No. This is all speculation, of course.
  12. I think SCV had a three way tie for high percussion in '91 and they ended up in fourth.
  13. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just read this. Awesome.
  14. You (and by you, I don't mean this particular poster... I'm just piggybacking on his point) also have to consider that the corps are on different sheets. Asking a judge to go back and forth between open and world class sheets over and over throughout the night would severely taint the results.
  15. I think this can be summed up by the words we lived by when I marched in SCV. Work like dogs. Sweat like pigs. March like Gods. To this day, I still don't know who originally said that, or why/how it became a motto for us... but it was. Go get 'em, SCV.
  16. I have a job interview tomorrow (Friday) at noon in Delhi. I'll be stopping at the hospital on my way back. For any of Matt's other friends and family that may be reading this, he is in my prayers and I'll see you tomorrow.
  17. I'm always fascinated by the DRASTICALLY different opinions showcased on these forums. I just got through reading a thread in which a dozen people said SCV's guard is going to keep them out of the top 5 and that their hornline is their strength. /popcorn
  18. I'd probably wait for the scores from the San Diego show tonight to be posted.
  19. Haha, great recommendations. I'd actually never seen/heard that full metal jacket speech until just now. Awesome lol! Is there a place where I can download an audio version of that speech?
  20. Can't believe I forgot Journey! - Don't stop believin..... great suggestion And carry on my wayward son is great, too. Nice suggestions, folks. What else? Remember, I'm looking for tunes that you'd be able to play over the loud speakers of the bus to get EVERYONE pumped or excited. What did they play over the speakers on YOUR tour bus? Thanks again in advance :)
  21. Here's a couple more I remembered: Car Wash Flashlight Superfreak Give up the Funk
  22. Alright, folks. I'm putting together a mix CD for one of my students who's marching BDB this summer. What are some of the tunes that were frequently played on your tour bus? Whether it was to pump you up before a show or just to enjoy on one of your longer stretches of road, what can you remember being played over the loud speakers? I know that the selections posted here will be rather eclectic, given the 4-5 decades worth of marchers that frequent these forums, but that will just make this more fun. I'll go ahead and start it off.... Some of the tunes I can remember being played a lot on my bus were: Jungle Boogie Brick House We are the Champions (We weren't presumptuous... it's just a sweet tune with an awesome guitar solo and we liked Queen) Bohemian Rhapsody
  23. It's been a few years since I marched.... but, iirc, I think most of the folks that I marched with in SCV had either come in with no previous experience with other corps or came from SCVC (a lot of folks came from here, actually). I remember a handful of folks that came from other corps, but it wasn't a whole lot.
  24. For those of you actually interested in the advocacy of Music Education, take a look at this. This man was the keynote speaker at the Texas Music Education Association conference. I'm actually a music educator in California, but a friend of mine in Texas told me about this. It's 48 minutes long, but it's probably the best advocacy speech I've heard to date -- full of fresh ideas and data to back it up. http://www.tmea.org/2009keynote/ The second video is the full speech. 48 minutes.
