  1. Didn't North Coast used to be Sagineers? Could be wrong though.
  2. Electronics can be used tastefully. Here - http://www.stevenbryant.com/ecstaticwaters.php The piece is called "Ecstatic Waters" By Steven Bryant, we played it in our Wind Ensemble concert last Friday, and I'd say that the electronics compliment the winds perfectly. Pre-recorded effects can be used tastefully, it's just not often. Hasn't anyone heard "On The Transmigration of Souls" by John Adams? One of the most moving pieces I've ever heard, and it's full of pre-recorded things. I know I'm getting off topic in to a larger umbrella of debate and not quite answering the question at hand, but I'm just saying. Electronics can be good. It's just not often.
  3. When I marched, and when I'm going to march this summer, I don't really care that much about the cities I'm not seeing. If I wanted to see in-depth views of Denver, San Antonio, Atlanta, and Allentown, then I would just go to those cities. But I don't want to go to those cities, I think that'd actually be pretty boring. I wanna work my butt off and get better at something. And I can't find anything I'd rather do than spend 16 hours a day doing drum corps. If you want to see cities, don't do drum corps. But I'll bet you it's not as rewarding. Corps are probably more financially aware than a lot of things out there nowadays. They rely heavily on the support of Alumni, and friends who donate extensively. If you'll notice the Troopers' Silver Spur campaign to buy a new food truck. As Fred Morris said "You can't run these things from your kitchen table anymore, it's a business". There are a lot of groups out there treating it as such, and those are the ones succeeding. It's entirely about the kids. Who are the 20,000 fans at finals cheering for, the design staff? Yeah, it's cool if you meet a person who taught or designed '08 Phantom, but the credit goes to the kids, those are the heroes of the season. After all, they're the ones who are being judged when it really comes down to it. It's about their ability to put themselves in to the show given to them. Design only goes so far. Talk to any corps director. I urge you to watch America's Core, the documentary about Troopers' return to tour, and watch Fred Morris react to the things those kids do. Then come back and tell me it's not about the kids. And it's not about winning. That's not an empirical statement, of course there are some out there to win it. But I won't say I'm an exception to the rule when I tell you that I had the choice between Troopers and Cadets, and I chose Troopers because it felt more like home. I also went to Troop because I want to say I was a part of making something great, not that I joined something already great. Of course we all want to get better, but a large part of that is challenging ourselves to beat our own expectations, not the corps that's near us in score. It's not about the arrival point, it's the journey one takes to get there. It's not what you experience. It's who you have those experiences with.
  4. Current member, music major, 3 hour flight, 3 hour drive
  5. - Go back to Troop - Make it past a February camp - Finally experience finals
  6. Some mild locational humor. I can't help but notice you talking up State, and then saying go blue at the end of your post. Go Spartans.
  7. While I was at Troop's camp this weekend, I talked with Corey, the DM, about it. He said it sounded fine. Now I know sound is obviously different from different perspectives, but maybe that's the "judges angle" being talked about. Take note that the main point was Troop's DM said there was nothing wrong. Not "I know what everyone's talking about"
  8. As far as synths go, has anyone considered the idea that corps might just fizzle out from using them? It seems like (relatively) a lot of corps used narration in 2005, but even as soon as 2008 the only corps I remember using them was Cadets. It could just be this past summer's popular thing to do. Maybe next year a lot of corps will decide that they don't need a synthesizer to produce a winning show. Even though Cadets used narration to tie for highest score ever in '05, a lot of corps that did use them in '05 didn't repeat with it in '06. I think.
  9. This show is going to be stupid crazy awesome.
  10. Copeland? In googling the name, all I could find was an alternative indie group, and a professional wrestler. Then again, I haven't posted on here since mid-august, maybe I'm rusty on DCP satire.
  11. With Blue Knights and Troopers being so close in both score and geographic location, will they affect each other, especially since they're not top 7 or 8 yet? My opinion is drum corps has become too national for it to really affect too much, I'm from Michigan, and I marched with that corps from Wyoming. Granted, I joined in April, so travel wasn't a big deal at that point. Anyways. Discuss. Or hate me, your choice.
  12. Makes me proud to have HLD on my left shoulder blade. GO TROOP!!!
  13. Anyone know if there's a way you can save the crowd reaction spot when crocker said Troopers in top 12?
  14. Last year I woulda given it to Troopers DM. But not the case this year.
  15. I thought they did. I remember reading that, I think
