  1. His camera flips everything though. A lot of people thought he was drumming right hand traditional.
  2. To my Rose Bowl again! Actually our director says Stanford has the best stadium for marching band in the Pac 12 (and I guess therefore drum corps).
  3. Went with Criminal. Was the show that got me into drum corps to begin with but it's close with Knockout, 88, connexus, and Metropolis.
  4. Go for it. I know a few rook-outs. You're not old at all. The PT varies depending on corps, but as you condition for it yourself, just see how long you can run. Something you can do is run a few laps than jump on your horn while you're out of breath. Simulates what you'll feel like in a show. Push ups are always good too since they seem to be the universal punishment (along with running). Not sure how long Surf or Raiders tour but it's likely to be shorter with Raiders for financial reasons. Most OC corps don't travel as much or as far. I see no reason for you not to try on both.
  5. Was at an airport in Baltimore once. Was wearing a Bluecoats shirt. Guy with an Academy shirt asked if I marched drum corps. At the time I hadn't and told him so. I asked if he marched Academy and he said that he volunteered with them, but had marched Phantom Regiment BITD. I told him that the guy who got me into DCI was a Phantom 93 vet. His wife said, "No way..." and I was like "What?" Turns out the guy I was talking to was also a member of Phantom Regiment 1993.
  6. Madison - ESOM. Saw that like 4 times and it gave me goosebumps every time. Bluecoats - Creep, Mr. Flippy-guy Cavaliers - upside down stuff, Jungle Tango, contras doing that record scratch thing Academy - visuals at beginning of Lollapalooza Crown - Herbert Cadets - Battle scene Phantom Regiment - I loved the whole show, it's taken time but now that I listen to it I find it's the only show that still gives me goosebumps like three times in every part of the show as opposed to me listening to other shows and only one song really hitting me, of course I love the dead drum major (that's always good).
  7. I was in Logan Airport and I was wearing a Bluecoats shirt. While waiting for my next flight I noticed a guy (looked about late 30 or early 40s) wearing an Academy shirt and remember thinking he seemed old for Academy. He noticed my shirt and stopped me while I was walking by and he asked if I marched Bluecoats. I said I didn't but wanted to and I planned on marching the next summer with Music City. Then I asked if he marched Academy and he said he didn't. He simply helped them out but he marched Phantom. I commented that my band's visual instructor marched Phantom 93. His wife was like "No way!" and the guy was like, "That's the year I marched Phantom." How many activities can find a guy helping an Arizona corps who marched an Illinois corps in Boston who marched with the teacher of a Tennessean who's going on to march this summer himself? Granted the guy couldn't remember my guy. He marched soprano, my guy marched contra, you can only remember so many people although he said the guy sounded familiar.
  8. I had written a similar plan. I don't know all the problems you see with his plan. but I feel like mine covers most issues pretty well. Thing is when drawing crowds, you need the big names. Honestly I know people who wouldn't go to a show if Phantom wasn't there. If they're confined to a region then we have troubles. Blue Devils and SCV can get a pretty decent crowd for west coast. But South is a little more lacking. From what I've seen of Tennessee it's actually a heavy Cavie and PR fan. Don't let them tour here crowds are gonna drop quite a bit. Looking at the plan I set, I see the biggest names drawing crowds to corps who couldn't have done anything near that by themselves. It is inconceivable to tour everyone but the G8 are generally going to have the most donations and souvenir base. While they're going to draw away some souvie sales, I figure the bigger crowd more than makes up for it.
  9. In my high school, we only went to two or three contests per year. While we also had football games, I don't see many kids not doing drum corps just because of a short touring time. If a corps can only afford to go to regionals, then you better believe they're going to work their hearts out to make themselves shine at regionals so they get some publicity. I recall Phantom Regiment working with Beefaroo to make sure kids who were short on money had a job they could do. Why not have more corps teaming up with local shops and restaurants?
  10. 1. Music people make music. Business people know business. Better management from people who have worked to know the system and can get better deals out of what corps have. 2. More corps. Since we have TOC events let's make the most out of them. The G8 have the most money, and while they can't throw it around, they have more slack than a group like Imperial Sound. I say more regional corps who do a small regional tour with the G8 separating into groups of say 2 (ie 1st and 8th place go to one event, 2nd and 7th, 3rd and 6th, 4th and 5th all go to others) and use each of those to draw a crowd to smaller competitions and then have one large regional featuring the G8 and all the smaller corps who will compete. The G8 are there to draw a crowd, while the rest are competing for show order in a true regional later in the season when they are the only corps competing for a right to represent at prelims in a rotating location. Corps have a right to forfeit their prelim eligibility if they cannot afford it allowing another corps to take their spot. I'd also include a G8 for open class who make a smaller tour (perhaps not separating at all) to showcase open class talent. For the smaller regional corps I don't think I'm going to far to ask them to share and borrow pit equipment from visiting corps and local high school and college bands. World Class nonG8 corps can tour as they please. They are not barred from G8 events. I do not think they would be required to start their tour at home. All they must do is guarantee they are available for the final regional of their region. The corps I'm talking about staying around their region are all open class. World class corps can simply use most recent scores to determine show order which will naturally be later than the regional corps who played in the early regionals for their spot. In short. Have an open class and world class G8 to use to draw crowd. Have smaller corps to promote the activity and open it up to less fortunate people who cannot afford to be in a G8 corps. If a corps makes the top 8 they have a right to withdraw from the G8 tour due to lack of finances, but would have an automatic by (As the rest of the G8 would) to prelims. I see a West coast region encompassing CA, OR, WA, NV, ID, AZ, and UT and if it ever occurs Mexico as well as BC Canada. A Northern region for: MT, WY, ND, SD, NE, MN, IA and Canadian Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. A South region for: NM, CO, KS, OK, MO, AR, LA. Southeast for: TN, NC, SC, FL, GA, AL, and MS. Midwest for: WI, IL, IN, MI, OH, and KY and Canadian Ontario. And a Northeast region for: ME, NH, VT, NY, PA, WV, VA, DC, DE, MD, NJ, CT, RI, MA and Canadian Quebec, Nova Scotia, etc. I realize my regions are a bit far reaching as they are, but I'd leave it to the regions to determine if they desire a subregional. The two G8's wouldn't necessarily travel together but they would start their own tours and compete at more minor competitions and exhibitions until they meet a predetermined start point where they begin the Tour of Champions. 3. Better advertising means more revenue. Instead of being so fly by night, I think corps should show up and stick around for a day or two. While this would increase gas costs, and extend the touring period, I think it'd be worth it. Corps could have cheap previews concerts or offer their services around the city. They could hand out coupons for cheaper tickets to the next show or even limited edition standardized coupons for auditioning at any drum corps under the DCI umbrella. The audition fee is not a huge barrier to those who march, but if it's free to audition for any corps (local especially) I believe more people will be willing to try it out. More people trying it, more people sticking around. Bigger fan base.
  11. Bluecoats. Always been my favorites and I wanna see if they can improve upon last year.
  12. 1. Cost to march (which is essentially gas prices, etc). Many talented musicians can't afford it. 2. Lack of/poor advertising. Even in the high school marching band world, the majority of students are not aware of drum corps. 3. Not enough show sites. Many people are interested to but cannot attend shows due to distance. It is difficult to convince someone to drive 3 hours to see something they don't really know or care about.
  13. I know that Phantom's tenor line had no vets return. I'm not sure about anything else. I voted SCV but I'd like Bloo to do it.
  14. And we're sounding pretty good too :)
  15. And your pewter piece choice can just be based off whoever's show you liked that year. :P
  16. I think the go to jail space should be "Overage member! Disqualified this year" or even better "Stuck explaining what drum corps is. Go directly to the explaining square." with the card being "Came across someone who watched 'Drumline' go directly to the explaining square. Do not pass (whatever it is) do not collect $200" Maybe just take the top 22 corps and the last one in the "Go" space that says something like "Pioneer! Building funds Collect $200" I figure DCI.org sells the board with chance, money, community chest, and utility cards. To complete your set you have to buy the rest of the deed cards from corps. The corps out of the top 22 sells Railroad or utility cards so they get a little more money to help them earn their own deed card. The pewter pieces you collect are your choice but the set's worth the most is you have all 23 pewter pieces. Houses and hotels can be replaced with tour buses and schools. The utilities could be food truck and equipment trailer. Railroads are 4 big event venues. Although now with the new way finals are done top 12 isn't necessarily world class.
  17. Who knows? Maybe in years to come it'd be a hot collector's piece. It'd be funny to see on ebay "RARE! Phantom Regiment 2011 deed card!" Maybe have a printout board online or you can get a better made, longer lasting board at DCI.org. That way DCI gets money selling boards, corps get money selling pewter pieces and deeds. Everyone's happy!
  18. That makes it a collector's item! The 2007, 2008, 2009, etc monopoly DCI board. And every single corps sells their own deed cards for like $1 each or less because that's a $23 investment just to get your cards and additionally you can by a pewter piece that looks like the corps logo!
  19. Bluecoats to pull off the ring, Cavies to take out BD first.
  20. Now imagine the music video with all the people wearing their full uniform which covers every inch of their bodies. Kinda like an anti-Katy Perry look.
  21. It's late. I was reading and for some reason the song California Gurls came into my head only replaced with California Corps. I was amused and started thinking about lyrics and I had filled in so many lines I managed to change that atrocious song into an atrocious song with interesting lyrics. Only really references Blue Devils and SCV (And yes I have my little jabs at Blue Devils but I mean no offense to them) but that's only because of a lack of lyric room. So yeah. A random New Years fueled parody of Katy Perry's California Gurls. Yeah. I'm weird. (And that rapping part was actually really irritating to do) To Blue Devils, SCV, Pacific Crest, and the Mandarins (California Corps) I know a corps, Where the drill is really cleaner. Tall, loud, and proud, They have a sound like no other Mirrors, chairs, and more As they change the face of drum corps (playing) Corps break their legs Tryin’ to beat them at marching (in step) They travel the world But nothing matters as long as they get gold Once they go on the field Judges fall in love (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) California corps, they’re unforgettable Bibbers and coats with plumes on top A sun-kissed sound so hot, they’ll melt your face off (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh) (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) California corps they’re undeniable Championships are a lock, West coast represent, now put your horns up (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh) (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) Vanguard’s cymbal V And fans cheer a little louder They sleep, on a bus Because soon they’ll do the Viper They travel the world But nothing matters but tradition Once they go on the field Fans be falling in love (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) California corps, they’re unforgettable Bibbers and coats with plumes on top A sun-kissed sound so hot, they’ll melt your face off (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh) (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) California corps they’re undeniable Championships are a lock, West coast represent, now put your horns up (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh) (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) Tuned, tanned, fit, and ready Sound real good and march real steady. Loud, proud west coast, These the corps I love the most I mean the ones, Like champions, Blow it, beat it, play that drum That corps a freak, They keep that beat with their feet No way, they love to play Work all day, better than okay Here at Indy, marching Summer time is everything! This corps be playing out All them corps be hanging out Sabres like lasers, hard labor, you savor Corps and drum major, My four corps (Yeah?) Keep doing more (uh, huh) I cheer for ya, Cause you representing California (oh yeah)! California corps, they’re unforgettable Bibbers and coats with plumes on top A sun-kissed sound so hot, they’ll melt your face off (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh) (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh) California corps they’re undeniable Championships are a lock, West coast represent, now put your horns up (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh) (oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh)
  22. Depends on their tastes. More classical people I've had success with Phantom 07, 03, 91 Generic marching band members really like 07 Crown, 89, 07, 08, 10 Bluecoats, 08 Phantom And random people I usually show 06 Cavaliers, 90, 92 Velvet Knights, Coats 07 and Phantom 08 are good too.
  23. Well I already said that I heard of Phantom vs Cavies. This is all just from a Phantom alum though. He implied both corps hated each other equally to the extent that he would never say green. He said the rivalry was longstanding.
