  1. Nice! There's also at least one corps in the park, with their buses lined up on New York Street. (39.770622, -86.168698)
  2. I don't think their guard lost again after the Stanford show on 6/23/2012 Phantom 14.7 BD 14.4
  3. I thought that was meant to be the iconic gun barrel sequence from the opening of every James Bond movie...
  4. New music vs. old music... There are many modern composers who write brand new music every day for orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz bands, string quartets etc. Not to mention some of the amazing work that's done on television and film scores. Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and other pop stars aren't the only new sources of music. Just saying. Edit: On topic, I always find it interesting how new talent interprets a classic piece, whether it's a piece of music or an entire play/film. Christopher Nolan's Batman films, West Side Story (the musical), Metallica's S&M, all of these exist due to revisiting and reinterpreting classic material.
  5. Great ideas, but an extra souvie location would require an additional body to work it. Would the extra income from the lot be more than the extra cost of having another person on tour? What about a tip/donation jar at warmups?
  6. Also, direct link to the results (pdf)
  7. Might be perfect for the Open Class events the first half of the week
  8. Both of these points are about southern California, not the bay area.
  9. As far as the poll choices go, Percussion hardest, Guard not quite as hard, Brass least hard. This is based mostly on numbers, since a hornline makes up about 50% of most corps, guard around 25% and percussion about 23%, if each section ages out the same percentage of members each year, the percussion section will have the least spots available. Percussionists trying out for one section are less likely to simply be moved to another section if they can't cut it (especially in regards to pit to battery and vice versa) whereas guard folk going for weapon line may only make the flag line, or a trumpet auditionee may be asked to play mellophone. Add to that what others have already said about the 'cool' factor of being in a snare line, and percussion is definitely the most competitive section. This is probably even more apparent in some of the smaller corps that struggle to recruit a full hornline, but have relatively no problem finding folks for the battery.
  10. BD has 15 guard trophies now, not 16
  11. Scores and placements for both shows are being held until Monday, so they couldn't use that to determine performance order the second night. I heard that the performance order will be different each night, but I'm not sure how that will be determined.
  12. I have seen many members over the years pack a set or two of nice clothes (jeans etc) for free days, laundry days, and after shows, but most of your suitcase will be filled with rehearsal clothes because that is what you will be doing most of the day every day. Your first year, you'll most likely find out you packed way more than you need... especially as you become more and more comfortable with being "drum corps dirty" (a perpetual state of griminess, especially in the more humid regions of the country)
  13. Well it's not a free subscription, it's just free access for this week... so you'll still have your new subcription when the rest of us are cut off once again!
  14. Exactly why this wouldn't work. As long as marching members are paying to participate in the activity, they should have the freedom to choose what corps they march.
  15. If SCV had a mini corps, they would be the Mini Vanguard. Blue Stars and Academy become... Starfleet Academy. CorpsVets and Cavaliers performing together as... The Chevys. If they got sponsored by a particular bank, they would become the Chevy Chase. Mandarins and let's say Blue Knights... Blue Mandarin Group.
  16. You added this part after I wrote my reply. I'm glad you added it, because your previous statements seem to discourage taking someone with you to this theater event. What's wrong with bringing someone you know to the movie theater to create one of these personal connections to drum corps? If this theater event isn't causing DCI to collapse financially, I don't see why we shouldn't be excited that more people have the opportunity to enjoy the activity in some form.
  17. And my point is that you're not even going to try to get anyone new to like the activity? So what if a high percentage of people won't like it, what about the small percentage who WOULD like it but wouldn't have known about it if someone didn't tell them about it?
  18. So... everyone who has seen a marching band play half time at a football game and didnt care for it definitely won't ever like drum corps? Might as well not even try to introduce new people to the activity, I suppose. The activity could benefit from a bit more optimism from all of us.
  19. 2004 BD because they have the highest non-winning score of all time. 2010 Cavaliers because they had the highest score that didn't win in 2010.
  20. I miss the summer, could it be time for drum corps already?? :-)
  21. They have quite a few videos of all kinds (warmups, indoor shows, field shows etc) on their website http://www.jubal.org/index.php/media/videos
  22. I was thinking it would be an entirely separate program from the drum corps itself, separate music, local membership. Groups wouldn't necessarily have to be associated with a corps, I was just using BK as an example. High school programs in the winter and spring could do it too, just like the do winter percussion and guard.
  23. I don't think we should change what DCI is, but it would be cool to have something smaller and widespread happen in addition, like an off season mini-corps localized thing, as we have with winter guard and percussion. I know a couple of indoor winter brass ensembles have been tried (I'm thinking of BK in particular) but don't seem to have caught on for whatever reasons.
