I have mixed feelings about the percussion section here. I recently downloaded the 1989 audio bundle for the top 12 and when listening to Phantom's recording, it sounded incredibly dirty, especially the exposed snare rolls. However, after I compressed all the shows into a program I use for my mp3 player, those rolls sounded MUCH cleaner. They still were by no means perfect, as the double stops/unison notes didn't really line up together in the drum solo, for example. So anyone have any clue as to why the recordings sounded like that to start with?

I agree. I'm not a brass player, but I enjoyed the brass book for their 2004 program much better than this year. It seemed more continuous in the brass section in 04. I, too, have noticed that the pit picked up the melodies far more than I wanted them to compared to the brass. Even so, it was still among the top as one of my favorite shows this year. Great performance by the players, though!

I was just listening to Phantom's show that year and I was wanting to know what the loud vocal at the end of the 2nd movement was. I must have listened to it a hundred times or more and I still can't make out the words.

So since they scored perfect in visual ensemble, I'll assume that means the domino effect went pretty smooth. I've only read about it, but it sounds like quite a site to behold. Great show that year!

I'm just curious if anyone has had any issues with purchasing audio bundles on the fan network. Ie. your purchased bundle yields no shows to download and you only have 72 hours to download them. The .zip file link also shows up as "page not found." If anyone has experienced something similar to this, I would appreciate it if you would share whether or not the fan network support team was able to solve your problem in a timely fashion and with good results. Beware if you try to purchase the 2014 Nashville audio bundle; you might not get what you paid for.

I didn't see any of them live, but when I listen to the recordings, at least to me, SCV 89 sounds more clean and powerful than 88 did. Both are quite enjoyable.

Definitely 1996, but then again I love many shows from that year.

2003 followed closely by 2004. Very entertaining shows all the way around!

Sorry, but I feel the need to play devils' advocate. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions folks. I personally don't have a problem with fans and alums aiming their frustrations at the staff for things they don't like in a corps because that's exactly where it should be directed. As long as you are making a point not to blame the performers, fire away. Sure, I respect people's opinions that believe such talk is juvenile, but not everyone sees it that way nor do they have to. The same thing happens to sports coaching staffs all the time due to competitive reasons. It's all part of the game folks.

Pure entertainment from start to finish. I miss those kind of shows.

BD 2000 : No explanation as to why the arrangement makes me experience side effects commonly associated with taking antibiotics Phantom 2005: I've heard the source music performed by almost every other corps prior to that year anyway Crown 2009: Just a drop in entertainment value from the previous 2 years Cadets 2009: It just didn't match up to what they did in '84 and '94, but still entertaining Bluecoats 2010: Way too many electronic sound effects for my taste. It took away from my enjoyment of the brassline. SCV 2010: Same problem almost. I still can't get used to a piano sound in drum corps, and the fact that it carried the melody so often, ruined it for me. Replace the synth with a brass book in those parts, I would be a fan. ________________________ The reason I believe some shows mentioned above (ie. Phantom 2003/2008) is overhyped is due to the fact that so many people can relate to the music being played. The music makes sense, is easy to follow, and creates a sense of satisfaction for so many listeners that some other corps did not offer that year. It's just that alot of shows have been so intellectually constructed, that the output can make the brain hurt. Maybe I sound like a moron to some of you, but I am like most people that judge entertainment mainly by if I like what I hear, aesthetically. Just give me something I can follow and put some power and emotion behind it! Don't think I'm complaining about others' lists, it's just why I believe certain shows are overhyped.

Simple. Phantom didn't need to use a synth piano sound to carry the melody of the entire corps so many times. If it weren't for that factor, I would probably give all props to SCV.

I always enjoyed being able to watch the percussion camera and listen to the percussion judge at the same time. Some up close and personal notes - almost like an "in the lot" experience. I would like for them to put that back in for sure.

It would be awesome if someone could upload the clip of him saying that on youtube.
