  1. One positive note: Bluecoats didn’t field a corps in ‘79 and ‘83. It’s possible to come back. HOWEVER, the landscape is MUCH DIFFERENT now than it was then. There simply is not much left to the drum corps activity and very little margin for error for survival. Hoping for the best.
  2. It’s a different era. In 1971 there were many local corps throughout the country. Shows were community held at smaller venues. Those who what wanted to march, could. Dues and fees were low. Budgets of most corps were sustainable by Tag Days, bake sales, BINGO and local sponsors. The touring model was limited to few corps (like the Troopers). No comparison to today. Budgets well north of a million dollars, member fees and expenses (with travel) getting dangerously close to $10,000 a year. Yes, that much. Also consider the time commitment for each member. No summer job and all. Easy 5-figure price tag for MM. BINGO has been obliterated by on-line gambling, casinos, and a declining population of BINGO goers Now, think about the scale of DCI A few remaining corps spread thin across the country Question:’Would any reasonable investor create a business model for a non-scholastic Marching Band based on today’s world? Drum Corps is only a remnant of what it once was The world is a different place - and a shame SCV will not be a part of it in 2023 The ONLY drum corps that had been in each DCI finals since 1972 The era ends there too
  3. You can’t judge how loud a brass line on a CD. Horn-for-horn, Crown is loud enough (and was loudest in 2016 in opinion) - contrary to your statement above. Take the electronic boosts away from the other 2 corps you mention and the sound would have been much different on a recording. Crown’s brass is unique with that signature sound that balances volume with utter lushness. Pound for pound, as loud as any corps of the there.
  4. Yes.Tour Of Champions (TOC) was the brainchild of the G7. The best of TOC’s began around 2011 and consisted of pre-shows, encores and bringing the marching members in close proximity to fans.
  5. Women’s soccer is way more mainstream than DCI will ever be. I don’t think an independent band activity will ever get the scrutiny that it needs. And that has been the problem all along.
  6. Check out Tilt. Folks stood in ANTICIPATION of the pitch bend all the way to the end and then some more. Standing O’s grew as the season progressed. It was an amazing show.
  7. A show titled “Secrets of a Drill Designer”. The show progresses to illuminate previously unknown mysteries of what drum corps shows are all about.
  8. Okay. One says Dennis Hopper, someone else says Richard Petty. Easy Rider (why no motorcycle?). It doesn’t matter to me.I’ll buy the doggone thing. For all I know, there’s a copy of the Declaration of Independence on the back of it. You know, things like this turn up at yard sales all the time. I’ll take it! SOLD!!!
  9. Not to get off topic here, but I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that didn’t know who the heck this was. Don’t get me wrong, LOVED watching the Bluecoats show. Very deserving of (one of the) silver medal(s).
  10. Brandt Crocker did a pretty good job as always. Dan Potter, “it’s not a record, but good enough”. 😀
  11. Must be a Robert’s Rules of Order or Marcus of Queensbury thing. As for me, if 2 tie for 2nd, that makes 4th, 3rd. Ah, who gives a darn. It’s BAND! 😀
  12. Same brass judge as Allentown, same opinion. Brass out-achieving content. Let’s see what tonight brings.
  13. I’ve been to many prelims. I’ve experienced this many times earlier in day. It doesn’t bother me and most of those folks move to the good seats to see their kid and leave after their corps’ performance. It’s actually one of the things I like about the earlier shows on prelims day. It pretty loose and informal. But….they’re is always a few that spoil it for others. Good thing is that those who do, usually leave. Most of the time, we simply talk with them, ask who they root for and root along with them.
  14. That looks like Phantom as you describe. I like it!
