  1. If I am recalling correctly, the Thursday night viewing availabilities at the theaters (pre-lims a/k/a quarter finals) was possible because Thursday is an off night at most cinemas while Friday and Saturday nights are not.
  2. I think the Troopers of this decade also have a song "The Long Blue Line" written by Gunny, RIP.
  3. This year Siberia. Other years the glaciers of Antarctica?
  4. Agreed. And one could easily imagine that assistant drum major from Virginia who did the pinning being a Pentagon commander!
  5. I think you may be too much of a DCI front office homer on this one, Michael. In fact, unless you are the official DCI spokesperson, it almost seems like a conflict of interest to answer given your blogging seating at preferred shows. The previous poster has a real objection which challenges the decision rationale you relate. As an activity, we do not charge exhibition groups at drum corps shows to sit in the end or back stands to see the rest of the evening. We do not charge the Open Class corps members for seats when their portion of the contest is over (outside of LOS championships) to watch the World Class corps. We don't even charge the World Class members to watch the Open Class corps. I know of no drum corps contest sanctioned by DCI ever (as of yet) where the audience is charged a separate fee to watch the open class corps perform, and then a second fee or even discounted fee to watch the World Class in the same show except for Championships week in Indy. Why charge the Soundsporters? It seems to be shooting yourself in the foot.
  6. Are you referring to the Fleur-de-lis made toward the later part of the show? If so, please remember that this symbol has been identified with the French monarchy for more than the 75 honorable years of the Madison Scouts who borrowed it from Boy Scouts of America.
  7. You must be from that "other county," the new comers...Nazz-saw. (from someone who also learned a lot about guard from Joe Mason.)
  8. Don't you mean "Matzah-pizza" ???? as they say on Long Guyland
  9. and Crown was so, sooooooooooo lucky that not once this season did they compete in the rain! Carolina Cloud no longer!!
  10. What amazes mw about this thread and the reactions it generated, that here, several pages in, not one person even said to Normy, "Hey sorry for your loss, but..." I sent him a private email. Unfortunately, it tells me a lot about those who post on DCP
  11. And as yet, no one in DCI has figured out how the members performing hear the cheers, applause (or even boos) of those sitting in the theaters or at home on FN or livecast.
  12. Kudos to Crown our Champion! By simply reviewing how many times their "poem/narration' is quoted on other posts here on DCP threads, it is easy to acknowledge the excellence and effectiveness of their narrator, even when he wasn't tooting his horn on the field.
  13. Thank you Sir Monk. Two questions formulated by us non-Hoosiers: 1. What actually is a Hoosier? (besides coming from Indiana?) 2. Am I to be surprised that the "Fall break" just coincides with BOA Grand Nationals for Avon and with that other "regional" the Indiana BOA bands have at LOS the week before GN's at LOS so that they can perfect the horn angles???
  14. Yes, they started that early...more in 2013 doing it than in 2012. And Tim K, I hope you remembered me in your prayers. i certainly need them and have enjoyed both St. John's and Sacred Heart near LOS.
  15. Gene was fabulous with the Long Island Kingsmen staff, Our Lady of Assumption in Copiague guard, and a number of L.I. High school bands and winter guards. He, his wife Vivian, and son (who ultimately marched Crossmen I think) have helped shape so many in the activity and always with the respect of the members and families associated with these units. It was always "Mr. Bennett" said with respect and admiration.
  16. What effect might the earlier school openings in Indiana have had on prelims' and semis' attendance? People sitting in my row at those contests remarked then that 1) the place seemed emptier; 2) noticeably absent were the hoardes of band kids (although they were seen at Finals.) Even Avon, Indiana (where Crown practices, where many of their staff teach, and who has an award winning BOA band) had opened school this year earlier such that Crown could not reside there. Ditto on nearby Carmel which seemed to have some sort of schooling occuring when I drove through town. School busses galore. Just thinking aloud... Also while some areas of the country are having an economic rebound, that is not true for many parts known to be loyal to drum corps. Gas prices still are at $4 dollars in a number of States. Hotel prices, airline prices, and food prices (grocery and restaurant) are dramatically up in the past few years. However, I doubt salaries and disposable income are, particularly with the college loan situation confronting recent corps alums and families. Although DCI ticket prices seem to be holding steady, other costs needed to travel to DCI are not.
  17. This article from DCI about 2013 attendance was just emailed http://www.dci.org/n...%2E21+DCI%2Enow Seems to answer the OP. Does anyone else remember the early days of DCI when a smaller venue (University of Colorado at Boulder Folsom Stadium) was used for prelims-semis. Only Finals was at the NFL stadium in Denver. And that's back when DCI prelims had to be a two day event because of more corps. The reason for the site shift was due to Denver scheduling but budgetary factors and attendance projections were also considered. ( I served on one of the contest subcommittees for those shows.) Would these attendance figures for 2013 herald a need to return to that sort of arrangement.? P.S. The montage taken of 2013 Champs may not be the best marketing device because almost no spectators are ever seen but plenty of empty (endzone and 10/20 yardline) seats. If someone not physically present for the show at Indy saw the vids, they would be moved to agree with the OP. Better camera angles might help.
  18. I give you plusses. How great of you to be thinking of others in this recoup time to take care of yourself. Hope your healing goes well!!! (Can you hear the applause?)
  19. I am not a FB user and don't know how to copy and paste embedded photos. But I was just shown a neat photo on Cadets FB page (left hand column) of a snare drummer and Cadets 3 (!) first recruit. Here's the link. https://www.facebook...&type=1
