  1. Today’s DCI needs more horn snaps. Thank you SCV for still doing it - I’d argue historically better than any corps!
  2. Mixed with 1980-1990s blue devils/scouts/other screamers, 2010s blue devils staging, 2014-current bluecoats electronics, and probably other influences I’m missing. The production is a really neat fusion of new and great things from DCI’s past.
  3. This season sure is shaping up to be a great one. Keep up the great work SCV!! To my eyes and ears their most complete program & top to bottom talent since 1999.
  4. Pretty fun when a corps selects music that has been posted at some point in this thread - especially when it's your favorite corps (and a piece that's one of my favorites)! Love SCV's use of it in their 2018 program - this is going to be a special show!
  5. Me as well! Without giving away too much (that's not the vanguard way!) would be curious to hear from anyone who has sat in on rehearsal. If you could describe the show using only an adjective or two, please share. Just curious to get a feel for the vibe!
  6. Very cool theme! I posted last year about hoping to get more Peter Graham music on the field so I'm super excited to see they'll be playing more (and Metropolis 1927 is my favorite piece of his!). This is gonna be a great summer!
  7. I love SCV but I gotta say dragging out their announcement has gotten annoying. I’m sure they’re just trying to build up interest/hype but feel like they’ve overdone it.
  8. Or you’re doing the victory performance.
  9. Guess we'll be waiting another day - no biggie but c'mon SCV! Last to announce show = last to perform on finals night?!
  10. Today’s the day of the big reveal (it’s Friday where I am)! Excited to see what they’ll be doing.
  11. Word has it they’re announcing their show next Friday (May 18). T minus 7 days and counting!
  12. I’m an unabashed Santa Clara fan, but anyone else feeling like there’s way too little excitement among the drum corps community regarding Gaines writing the drill for this summer’s SCV program?! That’s nothing to take away from the brilliance of Pete Weber but seriously people! I know some other topics have been the focus this offseason, but I think I it’s time to start getting excited about the upcoming summer for this corps ! Yes, we need a show announcement to have something more to talk about but with the staff they’ve amassed and upward trend they’ve been on for the last 5 or 6 years this is as good a chance as they’ve had to win the championship in 20 years in my opinion. Can’t wait to hear what they’ll be doing this summer and here’s to more hype for SCV!
  13. Good stuff! Interesting to hear the music is aggressive - last year definitely had that vibe (especially so after 2016) so will be interesting to see how the shows compare. I heard from a staffer that they will announce the show 2 weeks from today. The countdown begins!!
  14. Like being asked to pick one's favorite child...not fair! Top 5: 1989 2004 1999 1998 1987 Too many honorable mentions (1988, 2013, 2009, 2016, 2002, 2000, 2012, 1997...I could keep going on and on) Least fave: 1995
  15. What was it like to experience SCV 2017 from the head drum major's podium? This gives a great taste...check it out!
  16. Prediction: this thread will have fewer pages than the Cadets 2017 thread
  17. Congrats SCV on an unforgettable season, anniversary, and show! So proud to see you return to the medal podium as well as to see SCVC win the open championship, plus the alumni corps for its wonderful tribute to the organization. To the the vanguard organization and all the corps members (SCV, SCVC, alumni), design team, corps staff, volunteers, organization leadership, and so many others thank you for the countless hours you put in to make 2017 a truly magical season that we'll never forget!
  18. Yeah, I noticed that too. That final sequence with the rolling wheels is getting cleaner but still some polishing left to do. Not sure if others noticed it but earlier in the show (can't recall which movement) I noticed a marching member wipe out on the left side of the 50. Had to sprint to get to their next set on time. A couple individual bumps tonight but overall ensemble quality is increasing.
  19. The BD and SCV top 2 thread and then this...whew what a cranky week on DCP! Off-season is almost here folks!
  20. I was holding out some hope for that until seeing the new closer over the weekend. Having 12 rolling members in the final sequence makes that seem unlikely. With that said they could potentially do a partial early wearing of them like BD does and then remove them. Could be logistically very messy though adding that to the already complex visual design. The practical side of me says don't mess with it...the nostalgic side of me says figure out a way to make it happen. I would suspect the odds of them remaining without the aussie are pretty high.
  21. What a razor thin margin between SCV and BD as the season is down to two weeks left!! 0.0125 - are you kidding me?! And must say while I loved the old ending, this new one is sweet and with more cleaning should be perfect come finals! Take it home Santa Clara!!
  22. I shared some of this in the Mustang show thread but just wanted to include here as well! Had my first opportunity last night to hear this show live and my goodness what a masterpiece this year! Visually there's so much going on and the demand is off the charts. While undeniably vanguard the show is this wonderful drum corps fusion of eras and corps influences, which given the background of the design team is no surprise. Musically it has a vibe of late 90s aggressive SCV, with hints of Phantom in a few spots (bless you mellos and JD), yet very modern too. Visually it has that early 2000s cavalier vibe at times with the drill (meat grinder sequence for instance) and guard integration yet is also "new school" with the complex use of props. It's a wonderfully complex fusion of new and great things from the past. Kudos to the performers for making such a difficult show look easy and to the design team for putting one heck of a show together. If you have the chance to see this show in person - DO IT!
  23. Great show tonight and good turnout! There's something neat about these smaller lineup shows - less "audience fatigue" I suppose. Had a drum corps rookie with our group and she seemed to really enjoy it. She was pretty speechless after Crown and liked them the most. The quality of their brassline is undeniable to the most and least seasoned of fans. She also seemed to really enjoy the highly fan-friendly Academy show. As for my reactions I appreciated all the hard work of all the corps and the great stuff they're putting on the field. Academy - as others have said - have really got a formula down. Familiar music, well played, with a cute/clever concept. Really enjoyed it! Cadets are improving and think the new drill ending will be very cool when cleaned. I love the Cadets but it's just not my thing this year. Crown's brass is just sublime to hear live. As has been the case for many years now it's gonna be tough to beat that line. Great performance by the singer - my brass loving ears just wish they could hear that heavenly brass plus percussion exclusively. Guess I'm a drum corps dino at heart. And last but not least my favorite corps - Santa Clara. I am biased and tend to prefer their style but my goodness what a masterpiece this year. Visually there's so much going on and the demand is off the charts. A great night of drum corps!
  24. Will be there - can't wait! Bringing a few along including a co-worker who hasn't been to a DCI show before. Will be interesting to see what she thinks of drum corps on first viewing! I've given the volume disclaimer. Hope to share some reactions tomorrow.
