also, something i noticed about listening to recordings i have already from this show in addition to the bits and pieces of the closer presented in the fb live... boston's hornline is different than most in the sense that when they play loud sustains, their sound feels like it's pushing you. almost to the point of a never ending crescendo. that's a feeling i haven't gotten from many hornlines ever. for example, when i hear crown play bruckner this year, (as much as i love bruckner) yes its an impressive sound, but it's kind of just an impressive sustain that lacks the excitement and push and drive being given by the boston hornline.

for what it's worth, in the organization's promotional live stream on facebook on saturday, you could hear bits and pieces of their closer - "Smile" from Castaway

boston sounds good is like saying the golden state warriors are good.

okay guys i know the hype is out and about for boston this spring, but rest assured it's warranted. we're talking championship contention. gold medal contention. especially with how underwhelming the Blue Devils seemed. it's anyone's game at the top, and it #### well might be boston's.

okay to be honest, i had the cavaliers pegged in the 5-7 range, but when i heard that hornline video, i thought that given the right program, they have the talent to contend for a medal. if anyone has anything on the program (which sounds appealing based on the rep and theme) that they could PM me, please don't hesitate, i'd love to hear/see more from this group. by the way seems like kevin could be a superstar in the making in terms of dci staff...

It's funny to see people fantasizing about BD not being top 2. What's the last time they weren't in top 2? Once or twice in the last 30-something years right?

With the returned emphasis on jazz and the trend of weird time signatures, I think this piece would be great for some groups, especially Bluecoats

Is it just me, or is there much more of a lead trumpet - and trumpet in general - presence in the Crown writing? I've always kinda thought that the Crown trumpet section was the weak point, if there was one, of that hornline, but they're killing it so far this year.

FWIW, can definitely confirm "loud and angry." And in terms of technicality, some of their notes put Crown a step below, tbh.

Here's my Top 10 as of December 1st. 1. Bluecoats (Canton, Ohio) - Kinda get the feeling something truly groundbreaking is going on in Canton this year. Also think an emphasis is being put on being visually beautiful as well as putting forth a breathtaking sound. Shot in the dark, that's all. 2. Blue Devils (Concord, CA) - Really wanna put Santa Clara here, but it's highly doubtful the Devils fall past second any time soon. It's gonna be hard to top last year, though. That ending stopped hearts. 3. Santa Clara Vanguard (Santa Clara, CA) - Very tight medal group, once again. The Gaines Effect is felt even moreso this season, and another great show is presented, but it's not enough. 4. Boston Crusaders (Boston, MA) - Up and up and up. As they said in the promo video, "2017 was just the beginning." Buy into the hype. 5. Carolina Crown (Fort Mill, SC) - They may be running out of stellar ideas in Fort Mill. That much was evident last year. That brass staff is incredible, but they're not incredible enough to solve possible repeat of poor design along with a poor percussion program that may be declining even more. 6. Blue Knights (Denver, CO) - Thought last year's show was criminally underrated and underscored. Really believe in Bocook going all in on this hornline as well as an incredibly designed program coming before us. 7. The Cavaliers (Rosemont, IL) - Wasn't as big a fan of 'Men Are From Mars' as it seems like most were. Not sure Kevin and his staff can fix a lot of the problems that plagued this hornline last year. Hoping for a great program, as always, but not expecting one. 8. The Cadets (Allentown, PA) - These are dark times in Allentown. The end of the Hopkins Era could (and should) be over soon. 9. Phantom Regiment (Rockford, IL) - Huge fan of last year's program, especially those gorgeous uniforms. Hoping that stellar brass staff can come in and propel the Regiment forward, but it might take one more year of the downfall of Cadets before that happens. 10. Crossmen (San Antonio, TX) - That Texas homegrown talent is starting to really show for Crossmen; they're headed in the right direction. Really impressed with their recent precision.

2009 and 2012 are two of my favorite music books I've ever heard on the field at any level of the marching arts so those two are in a world of their own.

This topic seems like one big smokey cloud with a huge lack of clarity, so with that, a couple questions. So it's basically a "Fan Network" of sorts for scholastic ensembles of all kind? After some above-the-surface researching, is there no way to see what you're subscribing to before subscribing? Does the $25 subscription give full access to any ensemble anywhere across the country?

Really impressive that high school students can pull that off so well. I'm guessing drum corps would have an easier time with it than high schoolers just because of the time factor, and it looks stunning. Would love to see it executed properly in DCI.

Wait this is THE Kevin from Crown. The same Kevin who told that wonderful, gold medal-earning love story in Crown 13! Great mind in the activity.

Academy add Concord's Meehan and Ronan as brass consultants. Big pickup for them depending on how involved they are. Also very impressed with the changes with the Cadets. Now there's somethin I can get behind. Hopefully Shane gets the influence and freedom that he deserves.

On the topic of SOA, how the heck did 2015's show only get 18th? I've been so confused about it all weekend going back to the 2015 shows.
