  1. It's only "exclusionary" if there is not a fair replacement for those two corps, which we all know there are. And in recent competitive years better options. So I don't buy that argument. As for the fact that they're all male not leading to competitive success in the future I don't buy that either. The only thing that has affected Cavaliers the last 3 years is upheaval in the staff (aside from percussion). When you have that much movement after losing the team that was together for so long there is going to be a change. Part of the reason BD is so successful is they have had the same basic design/creative team for 20 some odd years. Cavaliers AND Scouts have been successful in every decade they have existed and that won't change just because they don't have females (in the corps, many female volunteers run that corps spectacularly well).
  2. Who...Cares... Why are you so against two corps sticking to their identities?
  3. Can't quote because I'm on my phone but to go back to the person who said "kicking your ###". First off way to keep it classy. Second off you're right, other corps having been beating mine, and my corps has been beating others. That happens. Stop taking things so seriously (and in a true logical discussion the minute you swear at someone you lose all credibility). Brotherhood is different than Family. I have no doubt that other corps have a strong family bond, but there is something different when you are going through the same thing with 149 other guys than if there is a mix. I'm sure it was the same for all female groups back when they were still around. The identity of The Scouts and The Cavaliers Is based off masculinity, that is not up for debate. The reason the have stayed as they are are many but, and I can't speak for the Scouts, Cavaliers started as a way to get young men off the streets of Chicago and out of the gangs. The mission has always been to mold young men into something more than just that. Look into the history of the corps and you can see just what type of person Don Warren pulled into the group back in the 50s and 60s. Is it like that now? Of course not. But the tradition and mission behind the corps has never changed and never should it. It's not some sexist agenda, it's the sole reason behind the existence of the corps itself. And on another note, i never understand why this topic comes up every year. If it doesn't affect you personally why worry about it? And BozzlyB, there are more things in this activity than "winning the gold". Yes that is every corps goal but if that were the end all be all of drum corps there would be a lot of ###### off people at the end of the season.
  4. Oh look, this again... Cavaliers I believe (I can't speak to Madison) are registered as a Fraternal Organization. Just like any other "boys club" there is. No, we do not want girls in the Corps. Not because we don't think they can hack it (just look at all the other corps that have won championships), but because we are a brotherhood. There is a difference in a coed group and a Brotherhood. Through everything in life we know our Brothers will always be there for us and that is a special, shared relationship throughout all of our lives. The issue of females never came up. Have you been to The Cavaliers truck after a show? Never a problem. Also The Cavaliers are the only TRUE all-male drum corps, Madison has had two females march with them in the past :-). (That last sentence was a loving jab)
  5. World Class 1. The Cadets - 77.20 2. The Cavaliers - 72.90 3. Crossmen - 67.10 4. Spirit if Atlanta- 63.70 5. Colts - 60.80 6. Pioneer - 52.10 Open Class 1. Racine scouts 29.80
  6. The opener is meant to invoke participants entering the arena, the run boy run section is training/preparation, the ballad is the calm before the event, the closer is the event itself. This from Mark Ackerson at the Cavalier Reunion this past week end. I am paraphrasing what he said.
  7. Marched with a 5'3" mellophone player. He matched contra elsewhere the year before. Did 5 years with my corps and aged out a horn sergeant. He's still short too.
  8. I know this is from earlier but I just got home. Let me be clear that the member (he was not yet a Cavalier) that took the BD uniform did so on his own, without knowledge of the rest of the corps. Once the members saw it they were horrified and immediately told Fiedler and he handled that situation. In response to the Murfreesboro incident, knocking someone down on asphalt is not something I would consider "fun" but yes, some changes were made after that...sadly.
  9. You're correct (except that the default of Periscope is to post it to your twitter feed, it can also be viewed in the app later). I guess DCI is just hoping that people will be adults about it and respect their wishes that you don't video or share videos of their performances. They don't ask people not to video just to be jerks about it, they ask people so they can make money (it's no secret and shouldn't be condemned) and to protect themselves should any copyright matters come up.
  10. They say no video recording right? I think that still counts as video recording.
  11. I would hope the people in the audience respected Mr. Ackerson's wishes before the start of the preview show and will not be posting anything online, since they were asked not to video anything last night (copyright and all). That being said the show is much more mature than the past couple of years, the hornline is playing some notes for sure, I'm skeptical about the vocal part but it is a very short segment, and I'm excited to hear (and see) the rest of the closer. This should be a fun one.
  12. You're right, what was Cesario thinking. He's such an amateur and has never been successful in his designing career. How dare he.
  13. I went through the entire Gregory Maguire "Wicked" Series in 06 (Wicked, Son of a Witch), and various other fantasy/sci-fi books. I usually read after most of the bus fell asleep, that would usually cause me to fall asleep too. Alot of times I would either watch "LOST" with my seat mate or watch "Firefly" on my ipod video. Even standing in the pit I was usually too tired to do much.
  14. Cavaliers are huge on history. You learn some your first year but your second (initiation) year is when you really learn it all. I know every drum major from 48 to when I marched, every guard sergeant, horn sergeant, winning show (VFW and AL), addresses of corps halls, names of famous members, etc. History is really big in the corps and I loved learning every minute of it.
  15. How have we gone this far and not mentioned "15 Minutes of Fame"? Gaga, dubstep, etc.
  16. Technically speaking "hosing" a brass part would mean they took a previously written part and watered it down. Since most all those shows were original music they didn't hose anything, those were the original compositions. This means they played the original brass parts without hosing it! :-)
  17. So far this is what I've gathered from this thread: 1. The quality of the show logo is somehow indicative of the quality of the playing and marching in the show. 2. Talking about athleticism means they are going to "hose" brass parts. 3. This could be really good or really bad. I'm set to wait and see the show until I pass judgement, I definitely won't pass judgement on a show from the LOGO of the show. 15 Minutes of Fame didn't know what it wanted to be. They had so many things going on (all the musical selections) and the "idea" behind that theme was just too esoteric and hard to present. The explanation behind this show makes it sound like they are just giving a name to this to have something for the announcers to say when introducing them, not so much a story or anything like that. Worked for Coats last year.
  18. In my 3 years we did required PT once (it wasn't required for us but we decided to join in and instantly regretted it). We did run some during the summer on our own and me and a friend would do 10 pushups at the beginning and end of every water break. But we were never required to do PT. Hell the corps never did running in the morning but they would do a variation on pilates and body weight stuff. Granted this was 04-06 so I imagine times have changed a bit.
  19. Sigh...this never happened. All music was written long before drill was. Integration was there for sure, but there was never a time where the brass was written to fit the drill... Now, the stretchy interlude part in 2006 is another story, but that is percussion stuff.
  20. Kennesaw Mountain High School has had their pit on the field for the last few seasons I believe. Perennial BOA Finalist.
  21. The year after I aged out we had a vet get cut because he couldn't hang. 2 years in the corps and it was his ageout that year I believe. No it didn't happen a lot, but it did happen. It was just understood that if you wanted a spot you had to bring and 99% of our members did every year.
  22. Had AT LEAST 1-2 vets cut every year I marched. If you didn't show up ready to play, you didn't make it. No one was guaranteed a spot. This made those that wanted to be there work harder every year. Didn't seem to affect us negatively during my time...
