  1. They've received two warning letters and there won't be a third. If they don't comply the next notification will be from the CA DOJ informing them their non-profit status is suspended. How long to get to that point I don't know, but I do know it will take the state at least 90 days to examine their back filings. The fact they announced an intent to field a corps in 2024 and a staff - a good staff - tells me they intend to catch up, or maybe have already submitted their back filings. If not, well, then they're beyond hope.
  2. Our favorite Mexican restaurant is called El Farolito in the barrio of Placentia CA. Last year a kid in a black jacket brought me my take-out order. When he turned around, it was a Santa Clara Vanguard jacket! It’s fun to meet and speak with another Drum Corps person especially a current marching member. He plays trumpet and it turns out he works there to help his aunt & uncle who own the place. Now every time I go in if he’s working, we chat a bit. He did not march this summer to focus on working and making money for college, but he’s always said he will return to SCV for his age out year in 2024. I’ve not seen him since the announcement yesterday, but I’m very-very happy for him!!! He just seems to be a good kid – the type Drum Corps often produces. We have family friends also and their kid will be returning in 2024, so, to answer your question, there will be at least TWO. Beyond that, I have no clue.
  3. Local tip: Spend the extra $25 per ticket and get Genie Plus and avoid staying at Paradise Pier Hotel.
  4. That analogy is awful. In announcing they intend to field a corps in 2024 what would you rather they say? Would you be happier if the announcement was "we are folding and never coming back"? Sounds like you don't trust them, but let's see how many kids do and I'm glad there will be an opportunity for them to decide that.
  5. Obviously issues remain, but this is FANTASTIC news from the Santa Clara Vanguard and for the activity of Drum Corps.
  6. Never felt the need to put anyone on ignore until these SCV threads started showing up. It's a fantastic feature that I appreciate.
  7. Can't disagree. Especially with the last paragraph but would only add GR was indeed a genius, legend, and also a bit complicated......as many leaders are/were in and outside of the activity.
  8. I'm from Southern California and I doubt you care anything at all about the Santa Clara Vanguard or what they mean to this activity.
  9. Hi Grandpa Joe, It's great to hear from you. Thank you for your reply. It's not my "only takeaway" as several things can be true at once, but it is my main takeaway. Appreciate your concern on my heart.
  10. It means there are people that don't like SCV's current management and are lobbying to replace them.
  11. We won the first DCI with a Finals score of 88.10 In 2023 it would have put us in 12th place.
  12. To me it would be absolutely tragic to lose the power and beauty of the all brass ensemble. Drum Corps is unique and I hope it stays that way forever. There are tons of other places for woodwind players to express their talent.
  13. It will be for me, and I think it's inevitable. I just hope I've checked out before it happens! For the "Dinos/Traditionalists" Drum Corps would lose, it may pick up more fans/interest from the woodwind-bando crowd and be a net gain. I would just ask they let us have a proper funeral.
  14. I don't know how many. A bunch. First 1972. Favorite 1974.
  15. As long as the kids are receiving a good education, forming life-long friendships, and having a good time I don't care what form Drum Corps takes. It's for them. That said, I do believe mistakes are being made in the direction the activity is taking. Broadway and stage shows already exist, so why emulate and compete with a well established product at the sacrifice of your own unique brand?
  16. Eliminating the tic system had little, if anything to do with the advancements of modern Drum Corps. I was there from before the creation of DCI and saw all the advancements from 1971 until about 1980 - all occurring under the dreaded "tic system." Drum Corps was already evolving and it wasn't going to matter what judging system was used.
  17. You'll have to excuse me. I have PTSD from Westside Story. 🙂
  18. That is a misconception. The tic system did not "beat down" corps that tried new things. You had to work within the specific requirements at the time (starting from the side line, color pre, etc.) but corps could and did try new things. That's how we progressed from playing mostly Yankee Doodle Dandy & Battle Hymn. If a corp didn't want to do much stuff for the sake of being clean (no one did that) their GE score would suffer. I'll save my rebuttal for G-bugles for another time 🙂
  19. The end of Drum Corps means the beginning of college football, so it's all good, no blues/depression. Fight On!
  20. It was done as a drum solo in 1974 by us (Tom Float, RIP, center snare). Not to say it can't be redone in the modern era.
  21. Understood. I interpreted your original post as meaning the SCV will never field a corps again.
