  1. Clarification -- Checked the link again just now, and it's gone -- called the local store, and they said that the "Aerosport" model is being discontinued. As such, it's not available online. The deal is still good in all Linens 'N Things stores, however. There were plenty available at our local store yesterday.
  2. Word up to 2007 rookies or folks who need to replace/upgrade their tour sleeping equipment: AeroSport twin size, 2 for $99 at Linens 'n Things stores/website
  3. Oh, to have Paula Deen in charge of Spirit's food truck
  4. They're trying to distract people from the Golden Girls; a difficult task, to be sure :)
  5. Weedy, I can only respond as a Mom, but as a parent or volunteer, that kind of enthusiasm is the sort of thing that makes you smile right before going to sleep at night, and makes getting out of bed a little easier during alldays. Just a hunch, but even the most jaded instructor would appreciate that kind of feedback from students sometimes, I bet! Looking forward to meeting you, and welcome to Jacksonville 36265! B) Will's mom (we had the basset hounds at camp ) P.S. OldSoprano marched 1977 through 1979.
  6. This past weekend's description of the program to auditionees included a particular emphasis that there would be NO vocals in Spirit's program
  7. Sounds like word hasn't gotten out about the big turnout & talent level (i.e., caption heads with sly grins) at Spirit's audition camps. Ah, but a little mystery is a good thing, right? B)
  8. Some video of Spirit color guard caption head George Armenta's Scholastic World guard at Arcadia (CA) High School last spring: Looking forward to some fresh cool stuff in '07! B)
  9. Wow... like nobody's noticed this drum corps quandary before? Dr. Phil could do a whole show with a guest list split between drum corps "creative" types and "reality check" types. Trying to think of anybody I know who might've double-majored in finance and music...
  10. The most expensive D1 corps is a bargain, compared to therapy (or legal fees) B) Gift-giving for drum corps people: the best shower of their lives, a Speakman Anystream 2000 showerhead. Two words: Worth. It.
  11. From a publicity standpoint, carrying out the full letter of the law would be P.R. suicide; they might not love the way the deal smells, but the lesser of two evils is sometimes the best business choice ya got.
  12. Eh, whatever. These are my husband's photographs and constitute his personal property; he took them, he owns them, and we know some attorneys Here's Mike Morris (top left) with the original "Georgia" soloist, Joel Schultz, Terry Hampton and Tom Stubbs, telling St. Nick (barely visible under all that testosterone, heh heh) what they want for Christmas ("6th place in 1978, Santa!") at an Atlanta mall in December, 1977:
  13. Golly, '89 SCV. How I loved that show, and take TLC of my aging videotape of the PBS broadcast. Have watched it a gazillion times and can hum every horn part. What a thrill it must have been to perform! Who knows how the in-the-tunnel "gipper speech" went, but anybody can one look at 'em and tell that they KNEW that by god, they were in show business, and they went out there and didn't take any prisoners. It was fierce and passionate and fabulous, and it still makes me want to hold my breath until it's all over. Yeah, I love '89 SCV. If somebody told me tomorrow that they were in that thing, I'd hug their neck :)
  14. We've already heard some affectionate reports from the baby blue crew who were there. Was getting a little verklempt, but the story about the one guy in the end zone... Don't have to hear all the details to know that it was the kind of experience that everybody there will always remember.
  15. Ehh, let's not put something like strawberry (ack! ack!) liqueur in the Spirit drink... We submit the following, originally invented by an MD. While no scientific tests have ever been performed, we have found it cures a large number of ailments... "THE RECIPE" 1/2 cup Campari 1/3 cup vodka (orange-flavored vodka would probably be good) 1/2 cup sweet Cinzano splash club soda orange slices Slice an orange, then rub the inside of two glasses with the slices (this part can be done as dramatically/alluringly as the situation seems to call for B) ). Fill both glasses with crushed ice. Stir ingredients together in a small pitcher and pour over ice.
  16. Former University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley used to admonish players who did a victory dance after a touchdown, "When you get to the endzone, act like you've been there before". Being gracious and modest in success is a sure sign of a gentleman or lady. Whether one just won the football game, sank the winning putt, or defeated another lawyer in court, being genteel and unassuming is just so more much impressive than loud, obnoxious grandstanding. "Tacky" needs to be called out for what it is, and shunned like Hester Prynne.
  17. I think the Scouts may have been the first drum corps I ever saw, in about 1975... on a Betamax player Sounds like a really great addition to Finals week!
  18. Those who've ever priced traditional summer camps for their kids know that drum corps is a unbelievable bargain. $20 a day doesn't even seem realistic, considering operating costs. Average price for average 4-week stay = $2,500 (read more)
  19. Yes, it was South Cobb High School. DCI provides a housing inspection form. There is a provision for the withholding of show fees to a corps if there has been a reported problem. I imagine that outlet is being utilized. A big hug to our friends with the Crossmen who sure made a lot of good friends up at Central HS in Florence, Alabama for the Russellville show last week! For several very nice reasons  he and I both hope the Crossmen have much brighter days ahead of them...
  20. "Okay, honey, as soon as this show's over, we're going to DragonCon!"
  21. The DH and I volunteered at the BOA Regional at the Dome just last fall. The difference between it and drum corps is that drum corps fans get there and settle in to watch the whole show. The crowd size during the BOA event appeared to fluctuate dramatically through the day as groups came and went. Some stayed to watch Finals, but not all did. Have never been to the show band event, but that's in a category by itself...
  22. OldSoprano is right. We ran three shows this summer, and had to come up with a total of 19 housing sites. Started the week after New Year's, and finished after the season had started. Yes, it is that hard. DCI's housing guy is one of the hardest-working, stand-up gentlemen it is ever been our pleasure to meet. If you don't know him, and only have about .05% of the information necessary for a clear understanding of how tough drum corps housing is... :sshh: I am furious with the corps that ruined the housing site that's only about a 15 minute drive from our house. It was a school where this particular corps had several alumni on the band staff, even! People, you have no idea exactly what a threat the ever-dwindling amount of housing sites is to this activity. It's the knife at drum corps' throat. If housing goes, you won't have amps or anything else you perceive as some unspeakable danger to drum corps to complain about, because it'll just be gone. Game over :( I'll be even more specific: You may be young and/or a little light in the bank account, but the best thing you can do to make sure you've got drum corps to watch next year, and in the future, is helping your local show secure a housing site. In my book, it's as good as a thousand-dollar donation to your favorite corps.
  23. ...and member dues will average about $5K. Even a week-long soccer camp for a kid is $1K these days (just try an internet search on sleepaway summer camps for kids for a really depressing eye-opener). It's amazing that drum corps dues are so inexpensive.
  24. Thanks for coming to the show, Baumer! The Russellville band boosters did a GREAT job for us and we're looking forward to another show there in 2007! Trivia: The Alabama Battle of the Brass flag that was on the flagpole was actually the SAME flag that some very nice Spirit of Atlanta alumni had saved... a show by that name was at Gadsden High School in the mid-1970's, then was at Jacksonville State for a number of years. Nice to have a bit of drum corps history flying in the breeze for good mojo for the new location! B)
