  1. Hate to be the one to say it but......most the DCI activity we know today will die off in 5 years..... As for the poll........ In the Cadets 2007 show, there was a piece of narration that said "Let's do something with no voice" Just by listening to it over and over again.....I would say at least 1/3 of the crowd cheered (Indicating they did not want to hear voice). The others fans......maybe they like narration, maybe they don't like to make any noise during a show or maybe they did not hear what was said...... I myself...do not like (And NEVER will like) narration, amps, electronics or any changes to the existing instrumentation One final thought.....if the corps are looking for ways to tighten their belts (Due to the current economy), selling off the equipment required for narration might be a REAL good idea. The last thing they need to do is buy/add the "Nice to haves"....
  2. Me to....... Good idea.......but it is evident that DCI has really been pushing/selling the Big Regionals in the Big stadiums over the last couple of seasons. I guess what I am saying is....there are going the opposite direction
  3. With complete respect (Because I liked both SCV 86 and 87 (As a matter a fact, I think you should have won in 87)) your 1986 placement was accurate. I say this with complete 1986 BD bias.....as I list that show to be my favorite all-time single junior corps show to date. The 1986 BD corps was born to win....actually now that I think of it they had a stuffed animal in the pit that had a sweatshirt on it that said "Born to Win". SCV 1986 was a bit of a repeat of 85 and I agree with Don Angelica in that SCVs' feet were a little off. Just my opinion........ On topic now......I think that magic tricks may have caused some controversy but don't really feel they pose as big of a distraction as amp's, narration and soon to be electronics do.
  4. I think all div 1 corps last season were the best (From technical standpoint) that we have seen yet. I wish all of the corps best of luck and safe travels this season. A special good luck to a couple of my favorites, Pioneer Madison Crown Colts Troopers
  5. Yup....these are the type of things I am looking for.......anything additional you or anyone else could provide would be great
  6. So......I have been a drum corps fan for quite a while (See Sig). Having played in the hornline......that is typically the section I watch and listen to the most during the course of a show. I know about music overall....so I can also compare drumlines and pit sections fairly well. Marching??......not impossible to analyze. Color Guard' s......have enjoyed so many through the years....but honestly other than comparing how many drops there are and how together everything is.....that is about all I am aware of. So.....what are the key "Technical" items I should focus on when watching (Judging....in my own way) Color Guard' s ?
  7. Another spot Grand Prix fans converge on after the show is Rutt's Hut (Also in Clifton). Also featured on the Food Network with special mention of their famous homemade hot dog relish and deep-frying method. Rutt's Food Review Everyone seems to have their own traditional places to go to after the show. It would be pretty cool if everyone would go to the same place. The folks running the place wouldn't know what hit them. Much like a full corps hitting a local spot after an all-night bus ride.....
  8. Actually.....the missed step off and AWESOME recovery made the crowd even more crazy then if you stepped off perfect. What an awesome two nights they were in Madison (semis and finals) On topic.......1998 is definately more tame than the previous and post seasons. I like 1998.....but I find myself watching 1997 and 1999 way more than 1998.....
  9. I think the main driver (Maybe only driver) for corps to feature many styles of music (jazz , pop, classical) in their shows today is for scoring purposes. I don't like corps being totally different from season to season. I love the strength of identities. Star is the exception because they had produced a ringer just about everytime. That's probably why I like 80's drum corps the most. You can also be successful with a stong identity. The corps I marched with has stayed true to it's field identity for 62 seasons.......
  10. Crown 2007 would be a pretty good choice. For drill you could pick any number of shows...maybe 2004 Cavies (007 show)
  11. In the DCI realm......for me its the 1986 Blue Devils. I saw it live in late July.......... oh.....and the won to
  12. I don't think I am going out on to much of a limb by saying no corps played the softs better than Star......NO corps.....
  13. I love the 93 Scouts show.....especially the closer. That final wedge and note is AWESOME drum corps. 1990 Crossmen is also nothing short of amazing. My favorite show from the X-Men. (I have a small stadium show audio cassette recording of them in 90. Back then you were allowed to bring in a boom box and record the shows)
  14. Hi All, Need help with my signature. I have observed other member sig's with larger pictures than mine. When I try increasing the size of my pics, it spits out an error at me saying I exceeded the allowed space. How can I get my pics larger than an avatar size ? Thanks
  15. No particular order, 2000 Cavaliers 2000 SCV 2001 Cavaliers 2002 Cavaliers 2006 Blue Knights 2005 Blue Devils 2004 Boston Crusaders 2006 Cadets 2007 Cadets (LOVED the HR....but all the narration...boo) 2007 SCV Overall the last couple of seasons, Love 2005 then 2007 then 2006
  16. As a longtime Crossmen fan (1987) I am a bit concerned myself........we will see how it turns out.
  17. Sorry for bringing your topic OFF-topic so much .........
  18. Very true. Only the corps staff's and DCI week show coordinators would know how to organize a DCI/Fan conference. My guess is....with some flexibility from everyone, it could be done. I work in a large company that sometimes requires 70 separate work groups to work together to coordinate a time/date to complete a task.
  19. To make money Do you think they said "Lets do something special for the Legacy fans" To make money They probably realize that they can attract a couple of "On the fence fans" by putting in an alumni corps in a show lineup I haven't tracked it that long. To me......it seems they use the revenue that Legacy Fans spend to reach out to and promote to it's upcoming fanbase (The marching band crowd). Please don't be locked in to the "make money" comments. This is a necessary evil.......but there are a lot of ways you can do it....
  20. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet...... 2002 Carolina Crown.......lets put all the guys in the guard in pastel colored (Peach, pink, white) silky toga's
  21. I think logistics could be "cheap" and a lot of fans would be engaged if they utilize the DCI Market place area. In recent years there have been a variety of musical groups (On stage) entertaining the folks as they enter the market place. Getting DCI directors/instructors away from the practice field....well....that may be tough but I am sure they can afford one hour of their time somehow.
  22. A few pages back I mentioned that I spoke with someone who was a sponsor of a local show and who also ran a local show. Unfortunately, I don't remember specifics but DO remember the lilt of the conversation. I asked this nice gentlemen, Do sponsors expect big perks from drum corps events in the same way they would from companies. Basically the answer was yes. Now I am not going to say this is the case for every sponsor and every show. I don't know....maybe its the minority. But I am sure some of them treat business as business......weather its for youth and non-for-profit or not....... I think just about everyone has bought something they did not need or did not use......same idea. Fritter/waste..... Good one........ I think you do a fine job......thanks for your contributions. I have sent a few email/suggestions over the years. One of my favorites is to have a DCI/Fan conference the week of DCI finals. Have the DCI managers field questions from fans in a town hall/open mic format. That way DCI can hear and see (First hand) what fans are concerned about.
  23. Now I am not going to say this is the case for every sponsor, but some of few of them appear to treat business as business......weather its for youth and non-for-profit or not....... Honestly, I never hit anyone........well actually my older brother but he deserved it
  24. If you were in a management position with the Dupont company, what would you do differently ? Kind of hard to answer.....because you are not (Or maybe you are ) familiar with the day to day operations of the Dupont company. Without knowing the details of running DCI, a couple of areas I would focus on are, Grow the fanbase and number of drum corps *I would not alienate anyone. (Only focus on marching band and just expect Legacy fans to hang around) Help the corps with being better money managers *Number one reason why we lose a lot of GREAT corps.......DEBT !!! *I believe I mentioned earlier that someone involved with a corps took a second mortgage out on their house to buy two contra bass horns. Try to expose drum corps to more people through non-drum corps events *How about some standstills for the elderly or for children at children hospitals and grade schools ? Provide Training for the customer service staff in the DCI office *Because I feel a lot of them don't have a grasp on what true customer service is. I am sure I can think of a few more but these are the ones off the top of my head
