  1. I know where the pistol is on a lot of my recordings -- my favorite is during 27's 1975 show; the double shot at 11:30 is precisely in tempo w/ the music...
  2. Yes it (the show) would, but doesn't it get an exemption due to it's "dead white guy" origins?
  3. Just curious, what do you consider "mainstream"? With the exception of some of Cadets' and Crown's shows, "mainstream" seems to be a bit of a stretch...: Mad World - Mad World * Harrison's Dream * Dismantling Utopia * Smile Into the Light - The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms Toy Souldier - Procession of the Nobles * The School for Scandal - Overture * Prelude to Act II and Maypole Dances from Merry Mount Suite * Children's Dance (from Merry Mount Suite) * Dance of the Tumblers * March of the Toys from Babes in Toyland Metropolis: The Future is Now - Asphalt Cocktail * AHA! * Metropolis * 160 BPM from Angels and Demons A Second Chance - Resurrection Symphony (Symphony No. 2) * Symphony No. 2 * Danzon No.2 * Nimrod ‘from Enigma Variations’ * Resurrection Symphony (Symphony No. 2) BTW, "simply needs to start living a life"? That's a little harsh...
  4. I remember marching that show -- always loved East Coast crowds!
  5. We had this one too, seeing as my Dad is a St. Vinnies alum
  6. This one for starters... It had a 'tick' at the beginning that perfectly meshed with the music; LOVED this album! Also the 1972 (I think) "Fresh Air Fanfare" I wore out many more tapes than albums, esp. our "made in the stands" tapes from Finals...
  7. If we're looking to musicals for inspiration, how about BD 2010 -- "Dance 10, Book 3" or "No Music and Lotsa Mirrors" PR 2010 -- "The Music of the Light"
  8. "MADISON!" during the break in the big "Ice Castles" push...
  9. -- in no particular order, for the most part -- - 1975 SCV, whole show - 1974 Muchachos Finals show - Bottle dance - Rockford file - Bacchanale, 1991 - Garfield Cadets 1986 (I believe) part of the show with fast drill and music and guard carrying the streamer frames over the hornline as they move - marching into Franklin Field in 1975 - marching into Olympic Stadium in 1982 - 1976 Phantom DM playing the rifle/flag "organ" during Toccata and Fugue in D Minor - Troopers sunburst BTW, XmenRam, any year you hear 2-7 playing Danny Boy you can count on a pinwheel
  10. AmFlag61, That's probably the one my dad was referring to...
  11. Actually, IIRC, this was taken at retreat, so no tick...I don't believe we ever went to 'Parade Rest' during the show...
  12. Elphaba, Sorry about the apostrophe; got a little excited in my typing... My Dad (baritone) was already out in '61 but I do remember him talking about a "discussion" or two they had with the Cavies...
  13. I'll ask my dad about the order; he marched in the 50's with St. Vincent's Cadets and actually can recall quite a bit from those days, e.g. post-show "rumbles" with rival corps in the bus parking lots, etc.
  14. ...or having someone hold onto the back of your shirt while you "relieved" yourself out the door of the school bus -- making d@mn sure you told the people down that side of the bus "Windows up!!!"
  15. if you remember: Tapping into the electrical system on your corps' school buses to supply power for the stereo in the back of the bus... Passing copies of 'Drum Corps World' and 'Drum Corps News' around the bus...for that matter, the excitement of seeing new issues for sale along "souvie row"... The Mark Twain Cadets' drum major commanding "Mark Twain, mark!" and the little hop they did at "Pop!" when marching to their "Pop Goes the Weasel" cadence... There actually being (a lot of) people in the backside stands, even at local shows...
  16. A story as old as recorded (DCI) history... I don't have them but I wouldn't be surprised if the CD reissues of some of the 70's recordings still have speed/warble spots in them...
  17. mmmm...BD guard in bolero jackets and gauchos...
  18. That second picture looks A LOT like the opening formation from this year's Cadets show...
  19. Keith, I agree w/ getting along with the current DC kids, etc. -- anyone who marched can relate to putting in the effort, the thrill of a good show, etc. I really think a lot of the angst that is growing regarding 'the activity' is that, even with a lot of the program changes, styles, etc. that have occurred, up until recently it was still "drum corps". Now it seems like it's reached a tipping point where it would be more accurate to call it "Marching Music International"...through no fault of the members...
  20. Heh heh...I fell in love w/ the Lancers wearing out (almost) the live tape my father made during '75 Finals... I had a GREAT time marching w/ them in '82!
  21. +1 on '91 SCV and '75 Madison... '75 27th - Crown Imperial build into the goose/kick step; '80 Spirit - no hiding what they wanted to do with that hit... '10 Madison - "Step into the 'Way Back' machine, Sherman..." BTW, WestCoaster, what did you like about our opener in '82? Greg
  22. +1 about your views on electronics. I am (yet another) "purist/dinosaur/whatever" in the process of getting over the addition of amplification/electronics. I can see how they add a dimension to the show; my problem with them, and this was more noticeable at the Canton show than the Akron show, was that they were TOO LOUD. Several times during the night the volume level on the vibraphone/marimba ensembles was WAY out of balance. With some of the corps having 10 instruments in their ensembles, there is no reason for them to be amped that much. As far as show reviews -- I agree with your observation about Cadets' performance. I honestly was blown away by the whole show. I have 2 observations about them: 1) Kudos for keeping stripes on the pants. 2) "Jeffrey" or whoever he is, is way too prominent in the show. He tends to take attention away from some of the amazing work the rest of the corps is doing. He also looks alarmingly similar to the overalls-wearing kid from their show several years ago (the year escapes me right now). I've always been a "homer" for SCV and freely admit it. I really like this year's show. I think the guard/visual/dance section does a great job with the show and the two breakneck drill moves are amazing.
  23. Actually, I believe the song is "Black Orchid" by Stan Kenton. I remember that show quite well -- "Hey! SCV can play jazz, loud AND high!" Funny quote from SCV's web site about that year: 'DCI also made its mark this year by officially approving two-valve horns, and they went on record as being "permanently opposed to any three-valve horns in the future."'
