  1. Hence, SCV won GE by quite a bit, I believe.
  2. Good review, thanks! I haven't been a particular Cavies fan the past few years, but this show may set me straight! *thumbs up*
  3. eh...but sounds technically pretty good
  4. Hm, I seem to remember from watching the video a while back that the opening block didn't quite rotate uniformly...sort of an accordian effect. *shrugs* I just thought maybe you were going for a cool visual thing :)
  5. Yeesh, and one of the most exposed numbers in drum corps history with their Jeremiah piece. And they tied for high brass on finals night, not sure if they won the brass trophy overall though... And Madison's incredible performance of Rhapsody in Blue... And what many consider to be THE definitive performance of Festive Overture by SCV... The Cavies' bold Thus Sprake Zarathustra (sp) opener, and The Planets to follow... One of my personal favorite Phantom Regiment shows with Symphonie Fantastique. Such a brave and complicated choice!... Suncoast going original with what many consider a truly classic show... Star of Indiana charging onto the scene in their first year (right?) straight into finals... The Freelancers with one of my favorite opening minutes ever, with that beautiful solo and the singing... *Note, I don't have actual memories of 1985 season, seeing as how I was 2 at the time...this comes from endlessly watching the videos... :) But boy do I wish I were around! What a great year it seems to have been...
  6. I have one for sale on this message board -- http://www.drumcorpsplanet.org/forums//ind...showtopic=63921 Chris
  7. I second that one. I also don't really like most of Garfield 83 I LOVE Rocky Point Holiday, but the rest of the show I'm waiting for the Barbara's solo and the RPH reprise. Madison 88, lots of people have said it before...I spend my time waiting for Malaguena to begin. Blue Devils 92...just When A Man Loves A Woman. I'm sure there are others, but these are the first to come to mind...
  8. Garner, NC -- Same complains as everyone about the sound. Through the first one or two shows, I thought it was just the quality (70s). But when Spirit came up, I was ready to be knocked out of my seat...instead, the whole night sounded like it was coming from my 13" television set. I asked for the sound to be turned up during intermission, and the guy said the did turn it up a little, but it didn't sound like it. This sort of soured the night for me...I was really looking forward to the sound slapping me in the face...for PR's ending to give me chills, for example (like it does even with my cd player's headphones!). Oh well... It was fun, though, to notice people's reactions to different things. With the exception of Cavies 02, I had not seen any of those shows live...only listened to recordings. Some things I noticed... -Some giggles at the first shot we had of the marching chimes/bells player for Kingsmen... -Some grumbling about the picture quality on the wide shots for Kingsmen... -By Scouts, people were feeling freer to clap at random moments, like the soprano solo... -Big applause when Scouts bunched up in the middle of the field to kick finale of the Gershwin piece... -Rather dry response to Blue Devils, except for good response after the middle piece (Legend of One Eyed Sailor?)... -Only polite applause for Spirit, I think because of the low sound volume, but there were some appreciative giggles for the great guard... -Some gasps and applause even for the PREVIEW of the Lancers guard (and I was disappointed the camera didn't zoom in on the guard at the end!!)... -Lots of SCV fans in my audience, so the rooting began even at their mention... -Exclamations of 'WOW!' during SCV's ballad when the guard expands from their ball with the black silks... -Great response to the SCV Music of the Night push... -Lack of response to Star's rotating box at the end of their opener surprised me... -Great response to the first formation of the Star on the field...then the first cross...then the second cross... -Lots of laughs for all things VK, but some gasps at first of 'wow, 10th place?' as if to say 'why are we about to watch a TENTH PLACE corps??' -Generous applause after each Phantom piece, and I especially enjoyed how it went from laughing and applause after VK to COMPLETE silence when PR started. The shiny flag poles during the middle piece didn't get the reaction I expected either... -Good reactions to Boston's drill in many places, and to the ballad... -Fantastic responses to Cadets show-off sections, and big applause at the end... -Lots of applause for several of Cavies' formations, laughs and some cheers for the 'fight club' bit, and some gasps at the breakneck speed at some point during the closer... Anyway, I appreciate DCI doing this. But I do wonder about the sound situation...
  9. Looking for what I paid for it -- $75. Section 310, Row 22, Seat 6 (the 'premium' section). Premium tickets now appear to be sold out on dci.org, so this is the perfect opportunity to grab one! I'll be there, I just bought more tickets than I needed in the end. Help a poor college student out :) Private respond if interested, or email ctholder@ncsu.edu
  10. 1993 Star of Indiana 1995 Madison Scouts 1996 Phantom Regiment (would have picked 99 SCV, but picked their 88 show instead...I also really wanted to include an early 90s or 1997 crossmen, but just no room here...)
  11. With the idea that you can't name more than one performance from a particular corps in this DCI top 12 idea... And given that I can't figure out what to change in my top 3 for 2000 that would allow me to pick a Garfield show in the 80s rather than their 2000 show... Here's mine: 80 Bridgemen 81 27th Lancers 88 Santa Clara Vanguard
  12. Yeah, it's my understanding that they threw out the show in early June? I don't remember what it was, but I know they sent the design team back nearly to square one.
  13. Good points, front. Thanks. And it's good to hear you take the health and development of your pupils seriously. When I was playing snare, we did stretch, but only the arms and legs, he unfortunately never had us do back stretches. Posture is indeed important, but even with good posture, you're adding quite a bit of weight on your spine vertically, which is still not good, and with snares and tenors, the drum is no where near your center of gravity. This just worries me, that's all. Why do these drums weigh so much anyway...
  14. I searched around some, so I think this topic hasn't really been addressed yet here. I marched snare for two years in high school, both marching band and in winter drumline. During this, and since then (that was 6 years ago and I'm 21 now), I've had significant and near constant discomfort in my back. Been to several doctors, etc., and it seems that I have a few slightly buldged discs and possibly the early onset of some slight bone loss from inflammation caused by the stress of these discs and from some of my vertebrae 'locking up' (says the chiropractor, at least, if you believe that sort of stuff). Anyway, my point is...does anybody know if this is really addressed in the percussion world? These instruments do weigh a lot, and marching with them puts even more strain on the back. I know there are people who march snare for 5-10 years (more?) and don't really have any problems. Do some instructors worry about this, especially on teenagers? Has drum weight been addressed? Thanks...
  15. I know this is an extremely old topic, but I want to chime in on it (I just came across it). The Cadets' guard is my favorite just about year in/out. Now, I voted for 1996 because it is EXTREMELY clean and because they fit well into the show and look like they are having a blast! Especially very close to the end, when they emerge from a prop, and for two measures they are sort of prancing and turning 360 a few times, and you can see one girl's face and she is having the time of her life. That's a great moment. It always makes me smile. 1992 is also an exceptional year. The only thing I would change would be to cut those girls' hair! When they're doing the flying sequence during the ballad and a few guys are holding a few girls and diving them around like airplanes...the girls have to swing their head up awkwardly when they reach the bottom of the dive to get the hair out of their face. Just an odd observation :) Also, before the final piece in this show gets going, the music slows down and the horns are playing back field...there is some really beautiful guard work. Perfectly together. It gives me goosebumps. I have also fallen in love with their work in the 2001 ballad. I know there were and are a lot of cracks on The Cadets for their laying down and other staging oddities during this ballad, but it effectively isolated the guard. The green silks are incredible, and they pull the emotion out of this song, especially when the song is at its climax and there is that toss that '88keys' mentions. I love it. My favorite silks of any corps of any year are contained in Cadets 98 Stonehenge production. Most of the time, each member of the guard is using a slightly different shade of the color currently being used. I remember specifically differing shades of purple at one point, and red I think at another. And the bright pastelle colors when the guard is lined up backfield and along one goal, using different shades of different colors to mimik the horn runs the brass is doing. Each color is a surprise, then they bring out another fantastic silk after that with the big horn hit. Some great weapons work, too. 1997 is also very fun to watch, but I'm not crazy about the uniforms and I don't...understand parts of their work. But I still like it. 1995 and 2002 sell the show, and I love the 1940s dresses. The rifle feature at the end of 1995 turns the emotion up for the final push of the show -- the ending to that show, at least on finals night, is one of the best endings of any show, IMO. I'm not crazy about 1994 in general, probably because I don't like the show overall. But I do marvel at the horn book arrangement, on a side note. 1993...as others have said, this show would not have been the same without the guard. Their work at the end of the first piece...in a block...launching flags at each other, and when they kick the flagpole down at the end of that first number...wow. Some very musical and appropriate weapons work, too. Shame it was so wet on finals night. Otherwise, 2000 is a blah show for me in terms of guard work, and I haven't seen 1990 in a long time so I won't comment. As far as the 80s go, the color guard world was quite a bit different then. I hate the hairstyles in 1986 (with the oddly perky, erect bangs!), but that's just a tangent. They worked their butts off in 1989, but overall I don't remember much about the guard work from 87, 85, 84... It's not fair to compare that era with 1990s+. Incidentally, I think Cadets should have won guard in 92 and 01. :)
  16. I still don't see what's wrong with 1996's recordings :-/ But I DO hate the 95 recordings, and I think 98's recordings are pretty poor too? 91's are just very soft, I always have to turn the volume up very loud.
  17. I thought the same thing when I was sitting in the stadium in Orlando on Finals night - 'Why don't they just cover the field?? I'll help them dang it!'
  18. Yes, thanks for the review! *hopes Cadets keep improving. they've got so much going for them right now* And Kevin, congrats on getting drum major, btw.
  19. There are quite a few tosses in the Cadets show in 1997, at least at finals. How early on in the season was that? chris
