  1. how much does everyone's jackets cost? (if you don't mind me asking) i remember my jersey surf one was like 50 or 60 bucks in 02. I actually didn't get my my last two jackets because they were both so expensive to wear once then put in a closet for 20 years. and i'm a uni patcher... i put my "semifinalist/finalist" patch and that's it.
  2. The cavaliers have performed for 4 presidents over the years. not sure of the circumstances though. Dwight D Eisenhower, Harry S Truman, John F Kennedy, and Lyndon B Johnson
  3. or they might mean they want to hear you play a rudimental snare drum solo(on bass drum) or spree or something of that nature. you might want to send an e-mail and ask so you don't bust your butt on the wrong thing.
  4. since this activity is subjective, it depends on ones taste. some of my favorite shows might be someone else's most hated show... i would recommend if you already have a favorite corps. check out corpsreps.com and check out some years that they won and download some of their shows from dci.org's ADP service. another route if you don't already have a favorite corps would be to check out which corps does what style music and find one that fits your style. i.e. blue devils are synonymous with a cool in your-face jazz style where as star of Indiana have been known to be... well we'll go with "artsy fartsy" you'll get a ton of answers by the morning... ha ha some of my personal favorites are blue devils 1993, 2000, and 2004; phantom regiment 2005; cadets 2000; crossmen 1992; cavaliers 2000; 2002 good luck and welcome to the activity!
  5. I just listened to glassmen 02 again for the first time in a while. really good drum line. love the flugle(sp?) solo in the ballad. good for them. came in 8th place and i don't hear very many people talk about it much. i'd say it qualifies for underrated
  6. ha ha agreed. it's important for people to know you don't have to be a blue devils center snare for 6 years to be a great educator.
  7. i just think it's pretty interesting information. could be inspiring for the youth. jim cassella was a bass drummer and actually once a bass tech for BD. Jim ancona is one of the few caption heads that is actually a pit guy.
  8. That's cool. just spouting a bit of history for those who didn't.
  9. Jim Ancona - Cadets Lee Beddis - Cadets Tom Aungst- Cadets Tom Rarick - Cadets Bret Kuhn - Cavaliers Scott Johnson - Blue Devils Tim Jackson - Blue Devils Roger Carter - Blue Devils Mike Jackson - Blue Knights Murray Gusseck - Santa Clara Vanguard Jim Cassella - Santa Clara Vanguard Paul Rennick - 27 Lancers those are just the head guys that I could think of off the top of my head. but tech staff wise I would say cavaliers also have a pretty high number.
  10. The Jersey Surf used to have an indoor percussion ensemble entitled Riptide Percussion before they merged with, I think, eagle independent to become United percussion. I guess it's a good name. ha ha
  11. bd 93 and 00. do i think those show's should've won? no but they were two shows that i absolutely love and changed my life. (they got me to march and into don ellis.)
  12. no order... 92 xmen 93 BD 00 BD 00 vanguard 04 vanguard 04 BD 03 phantom 93 star 02 cavaliers 05 phantom
  13. My favorite corps to eat with (in order): Phantom - Tater tot pizza casserole... delish. BD - had good quality, but just very repetitive... same 7 meals on rotation over 3 months (but my god, pizza bagels... so good...) Crossmen - can't beat the philly cheese steaks and the grilled cheese is magnificent. Cavaliers - Eh... not bad, but nothing to write home about... wins the best beverage contest though... so many choices... Jersey surf... well they didn't have a food truck when i marched. We had plenty of cold cuts and trash bag salad... some times combined into one awkward sandwalad. I gotta say though, from eating off of blue coats truck from time to time. they also have some delicious food.
  14. I really really really disagree. While Lee's tuning and arranging is quite different from most of the other top lines, I really appreciate what he does to make the whole drumline sound as one vs. snare vs. tenor. vs. bass (other people do that incredibly well too, but his just seems different.) check out crossmen from 02-04. BUT. you are entitled to your opinion. so fair enough.
  15. really disappointed about the potential loss of drum cam / judges tapes... plus i was really looking forward to hearing Georges explanation of the cadets show.
  16. Anyone witness the interesting start to BD's stanford show in 07?
  17. well, yes that also makes sense... but I meant in the way that auditions for each corps would be more competitive resulting in more competitive corps. If there are no lower tier corps, it forces everyone who wants to march to funnel into the 7 remaining which would mean that the remaining corps would have the pick of the litter. It would result in more internal competition. Think about it this way, for every person who leaves troopers and goes to corps x, there are two others who have the performance ability to march where ever they want but stay at troopers. If the troopers are gone, that takes away two spots for the green kids who barely make corps x. Thus making those who make the corps have to work that much harder... follow? sorry it's late...
  18. been said... but march somewhere... previous experience can get you farther than you think. not only that, i would recomend going to phantoms audition camp this upcoming season. you've never marched before and you're basing your ultimate life goal on youtube videos and watching some lots... go to a camp and check it out for your self before you bust your ### for three years go audition and find out you hate it... if you don't like a weekend of it, you wont like 3 months of it. (not saying you will hate it... i'm just saying)
  19. Great performers will be great performers. what about all the 16/17 year olds in cavaliers and blue devils who've never marched anywhere before. Actually, i'm willing to bet if every corps from 21-8th place folded it would make 7-1 way way more competitive.
  20. Crossmen and blue devils have theirs after tour on the weekend of the first audition camp. phantom has theirs during tour around the atlanta show/allentownish. Cavaliers used to have theirs like crossmen and blue devils, but this year they had the banquet the day after finals so all the members from out of state, country, and continent could attend. I dig the audition camp version. It gives you enough time to get the hell away from everyone so you actually miss them instead of wanting to go home to your girlfriend/bed/beer.
  21. (jesus with the puns...) did he cross the line? maybe... but are you that emotionally invested in how marching bands handle them selves at retreat that you will allow the actions of one member to shred all positive memories of corps x? i've been a part of lots of corps. i've seen little things here and there that not many others see. you can choose to blow it out of proportion, or you can understand that out of 150ish people in corps x per year, some of them are bound to make social blunders... Some guy puked in bluecoats... are they all a-holes? certainly not. some guy in BD was a #####. good for him. the majority of the rest of the corps is made up of great guys/girls. we're on a giant rock flying through space... eh, we're flipping out about summer marching band. if this is your main issue with life, you must have a lot more figured out in your life than I do...
  22. i've marched 5 corps in 7 years. i won a ring and two drum trophies. twice i went to a lower placing corps... i've thoroughly enjoyed the experiences i've had at every corps i marched. i've been in a wedding of one of my good friends i've marched with. i still keep in touch with people from every corps i've marched... if you have a good heart and a good personality you'll create friendships where ever you go. i mean, it's just marching band. -christopher
  23. i tried to give my world championship ring to my dad and he wouldn't even try it on let alone keep it... he marched for 10 years and never got one, i'm where i am today because of him and i wanted him to have it. i was actually dissapointed he wouldn't take it.
  24. i could see a horn player needing some stuff, but as a drummer, i haven't used a rehearsal bag in years. don't need much more than sticks and a drum.
