  1. I remember! Unbelievable guard and rockin' drumline.
  2. As an arranger/composer, I feel it is wrong to pirate copyrighted material for resale, but to just get a glimpse is fine. In some cases, I might sell more. It could be free advertising. If I chose to not purchase DVD's or CD's, it's not because I have "stolen" versions, it's because I might not be able to afford them. The quality of those "stolen" recordings is not even close to the quality of the DCI productions.
  3. Very true! I saw a vid of SCV on "youtube" and it only made me want to find a way to get to a show. I'm taking about 20 on my students to Louisiana on a four hour bus ride just to get a fix. That vid of SCV did them no justice at all. Nothing on TV is near as good as seeing it live. Nothing.
  4. Very wierd year indeed. We seemed to be playing catch up all year long. I think we peaked at Finals, but still finished 5th. The top 4 were within .8 of each other, and we had beat Sprit in Allentown the week before, so it was a bit hard to swallow. Small consolulation was winning marching. We did take pride in the fact that marching was our thing back in those days. I think that made two in row for marching. Anyway, I don't remember the crowd sounding abnormally loud, but that was a long time ago.
  5. Scores 1 Blue Devils 86.400 2 Phantom Regiment 84.600 3 The Cadets 84.400 5 Carolina Crown 80.650 6 Colts 74.900 7 Crossmen 73.600 8 Capital Regiment 72.650 DIVISION II 1 Colt Cadets 56.
  6. Well, it was tough getting punished in Flying Dutchemn, but I was involved in my fair share of dishing out some whoopass. Uncle Z, do you remember a couple of guys named Kent Scott and Bob Greer? They came to Quincy in about '74 or '75 to help us out. They were a big influence on our organzation. We were never very good, but we did climb to 14th in class A by '77.
  7. That would be correct! The scores always seemed to jump up about 20 points and they still did inspections, I believe until about '75.
  8. First show I performed in was Macomb, Illinois on May 15th, 1972. First show I saw live was in Springfield, Illinois on August 21st, 1971. Last Junior corps show I performed in was DCI Finals in Montreal, on August 21st, 1982. Last show I've seen live was in Memphis, TN on June 26th, 2004. I did march a couple of seasons with the Bayou City Blues and we did the Houston show in 1995 or 1996. Enjoyed almost every minute.
  9. Me and a couple of buddies from the horn line watched them at Lynn about a week before DCI, and before T.O. was over, we knew that they had the championship locked up. I hated to admit it, but they were incredible. We were fighting for 2nd. The energy of the marching and playing was over the top. The horn line was the best I had ever heard to that point, and the guard was fantastic. Hats off to the 82 Blue Devils.
  10. A Phantom Regiment great and lifelong member of the organization is in this photo taken in 1958. Can you guess who?
  11. Thanks for the compliments GGarrett, but the Scouts weren't far from being in the mix as well. Didn't mean to be splitting hairs, just thought that BD and Cadets were better after I saw the vid. I never believed that until I bought the Legacy DVD a couple of years ago. I always felt like we should have ended up 2nd to the DEVS. I really didn't like losing to the Cadets. I think they only beat us one other time that year and our drum score dropped 1.4 from prelims. I always felt like the drum line sort of let the corps down. Don't get me wrong. If I had it all to do over again, I would still choose to march with the Regiment. I spent the best years of my life with that organization and I remain close to those involved with the corps today. Just trying to be realistic.
  12. I totally agree. I felt like the drum line had a better prelims performance, but we didn't suck at finals. I hate to admit this, but about a week before finals, we saw the Devs in Lynn and I remember thinking, we can't beat them. They looked and sounded incredible. Even SCV tried to dust off the bottle dance in an attempt to beat them. Spartacus was a leap of faith, and we pulled it off. What a wonderful ride. Anyway, I did find a bunch of pics from '81 and '82. Although none as stunning as that perlims shot. I'll get them scanned and put some up here. Most are from finals, but some were from earlier in the season. Also, if memory serves, wasn't the attendence about 40,000 that night. Seems like I remember something like that.
  13. Speaking of 82', I'm listening to finals from that night on season pass. Gotta love it! I hate to admit it, but I think the Cadets beat us. I never believed that until I got the Legacy DVD and saw it for myself. They were rockin'.
  14. I might have some. I'll check my old photo albums. I also have the Regiment yearbooks from back then. Maybe I can dig those out as well. JD, didn't you send me a recording of 81 or 82 with some other stuff on it a couple of years ago? I still listen to that tape every now and then. Kevin
  15. I too performed in this historical event. Like GGarrett I was in the snare line, but not the Scouts. My mind is going, but I was thinking the same as Jeff. Seems like 81', but maybe it rained the same year we had the tie-breaker. I was thinking they happend in different seasons, but it has been almost 24 YEARS. A couple of our percussion instructors came out to retreat and told us to "saddle up". The Scouts had tied us and we were doing the show again. I don't believe they had beat us that season yet, (just checked corps reps and they had not) so we were somewhat "###### off" as I remember. I think the only way to break ties is to do the show again. Like overtime for sporting events. A tie for the championship should never happen. Decide it on the field. Fun memories
  16. I saw my first Drum Corps show in 1971 at the Illinios State fair on a track. The Cavaliers doing the clown show and the Black Knights playing The Impossible Dream. I was hooked. After marching for 11 seasons, teaching for 3 and being a Band Director for the last 7, I enjoy todays productions as much as I did then. As far as pride, discipline, dedication and musicianship are concerned? These young students today exhibit as much now, if not more. Especially musicianship. I do not care for the narration, but I STILL LOVE THIS ACTIVITY for many other reasons. I saw the Phantom Regiment rehearse thursday night and I had GOOSEBUMPS. PLENTY! P.S. Not sure how I'll feel about saxophones though.
  17. I don't usually do these things, but it looks like so much fun, so I'll give it shot. 18. Your killing me. I spit out my coffee all over my keyboard. Funny Stuff!
  19. Try to use Evans heads. They stay in tune longer and you can play with the amount of muffling for different size drums. I muffle all of the bigger drums, then use less for the 16 and 20. If the line is a bit dirty, then muffle less, because the ring will cover up many sins. If you can't get Evans, then try glueing the muffling to the drum. Leave about a quarter inch above the bearing edge and use a spray adhevise. Spray the shell and the foam so it sticks. I have NEVER had any fall off inside the drum. This saves much time when you change heads. With regard to tuning. Start with the bottom drum then go up a 5th, then a 4th, then at least a 3rd or even a 4th, then the same for the top drum. If you keep the intervals wide, you'll get good definition between the drums.
  20. That was my age out year, and I remember two of our percussion staff coming out to retreat before they announced the last 3 or 4 scores. They told us to mount up, because we had to warm up to do the show again. We were like, "what's going on", then they tell us we tied Madison. I also remember playing in a huge rainstorm at Dekalb, but I think that was in 81'. Anyway, neat to remember some of this old stuff. Kevin PR 79-82
