  1. Fantastic sound from that hornline. Not sure about drill... will have to get another read but the opening drill... eh? Guard incomplete but I can tell you they have one heck of a book so far, tons of triad and execution is pretty well done for June. Great drums. I'm excited for Canton again.
  2. me like spinny flags... there purdy :P
  3. Loved everything BUT the gong at the end. Appropriate for this arrangement but don't hear it w/ horns. I think this will translate very well and can't wait to hear it!
  4. "Name a movie, song, painting that is does not have some sort of theme behind it."-- TGC ... or drum corps show, for that matter.
  5. Sounds like some real good things are happening up I-4. I have a little twinge thinking about it!! :P
  6. My votes... 1984 Suncoast Sound I'd love to see this on the big screen. This Vietnam show is amazing! Suncoast deserves the nod on the Countdown for their overall contribution to the activity. Was torn between 84 and 85 but I marched in 84 so they got the nod. 1986 Blue Devils One of DCI's masterpieces. 1987 Garfield Cadets and Santa Clara Vanguard Both shows are acclaimed as one of the very best from each of these corps. Appalachian Spring and Russian Christmas Music... classic's indeed. 1995 Madison Scouts I've only heard the recording but I get chicken-skin everytime as the crowd goes ballistic at the end. 2000 The Cavaliers This first Championship show of the "5 of 7". Why this one? The music and visual are both haunting and beautiful. 2006 Phantom Regiment and Carolina Crown Faust is one of my favorites from last year and ranks up high on my All-Time list. Carolina Crown... speaks for itself, just a ball-buster music book. LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! No repeaters on my list (saw the last two CC's and want something new) and I did not split my vote even though this list could be filled with multiple great shows by many great corps out there.
  7. It's people like you that we, as a smaller corps, appreciate and make all of our efforts worthwhile. As a former (?) MM of smaller corps, I am aware of the attitude some folks have towards us. So what? They can have their hot dog and we'll continue to rehearse our long weekends and giving our all during performances. Thanks for appreciating what we do. "Entertainment value" indeed.
  8. My thoughts and prayers are with the Stearn and Bluecoats families.
  9. Heard it live about 8 times in the summer of '84... incredible. And they KILLED it on Finals night. The audience was on it's feet a full minute before the end and it was utter chaos. I remember jumping up and down and screaming like a little girl along with 20,000 or so other fans in Atlanta. My fondest memory of that summer. :P
  10. You'll find that throughout the very LONG history of drum corps, literally thousands of woodwind players have adapted quickly to brass instruments and done quite well. Many corps are eager to teach woodwind players due to your ability to read music, breathe, understand articulations and dynamics, and march and play at the same time. As for your contention there are no drum corps in your area, I've provided a list of all corps in the NE US: DCI Div. II Jersey Surf Mount Holly, NJ Spartans Nashua, NH DCI Div. III 7th Regiment New London, CT Citations Burlington, MA Raiders Wayne, NJ Spirit of Newark/New Jersey Linden, NJ Targets Springfield, MA Vision Elite Brooklyn, NY DCA Brigadiers Buccaneers Bushwackers Caballeros Empire Statesman Hurricanes Rochester Crusaders Skyliners Sunrisers White Sabres You'll find that most, if not all of these corps would be thrilled to have you in their lines and the instruction you would receive is first-rate. Check out the DCI website for links to Div II/III corps. The other option is to check out DCA. The membership includes many top professional musicians and many staff members teach BOTH DCI and DCA. Many students train in DCA before finishing their junior careers in DCI. Bottom line... if you really want to march, the resources are out there. GO FOR IT! The experience is amazing in both organizations and you don't want to be 50 and wish you'd done it. Good luck!
  11. So, the next time there is a heavy debate regarding changes to the current system, will Jeff reply... "submit a proposal"? :P (but I want the $1!!)
  12. Many marching band circuits limit how far into the form a judge is allowed... typically remanded to the front sideline and the outer fringes of the perimeter in front of the front hash.
  13. Yep. Mike is correct. Placement changes for 2006 based on ordinals: 4. Cadets 5. Bluecoats Margin= 5 ordinal points (or 0.5 ordinal points if you divide by 10) 7. Crown 8. Blue Knights Margin= 3 ordinal points (or 0.3 ordinal points if you divide by 10) The margin for the Top 3? 1. Cavaliers 18 or 1.8 2. Regiment 19 or 1.9 3. BD 25 or 2.5 EDIT: Phil's post points to the need for discussion if this is to be considered as he and I used 2 different formulas to calculate ordinals... Phil adding all subcaptions and I adding caption totals.
  14. Thanks Vic! Here's wishing all of the South and DCA warm holiday wishes and a safe new year!!
  15. Great choice, JJ! Congrats Amanda! Your leadership and passion for drum corps and, specifically, Heat Wave, keeps the future bright. I know you'll do a fantastic job.
  16. Seems like up until last year, James Logan used quite a bit of street dance in their programs to great success. Braddock injects alot of FLAVA into their repetoire and does well. As with all skills, goes to training. Well trained = well credited. p.s. Hey Alisha! Welcome to HeatWave! Congrats and can't wait to meetcha.
  17. Funny, I didn't hear any ensemble tears from Bloo on Finals night. In fact, they were much closer to tearing in Atlanta and during 1/4's and semi's. Articulation was MUCH better in Finals. IMO, of course. I remember feeling an incredible amount of tension from the corps during 3 small segments in the first 4 minutes of the program in Atlanta and Thur/Fri nights. That feeling that "OMG" they're gonna lose it any second. Nothing but bliss on Finals night.
  18. So to answer the question of who would have won the audience award this year based on crowd response? Clearly Phantom Regiment as the roar of applause shook the foundation of Camp Randall Stadium on all three nights! ^0^
