sadly, I believe all three are no longer with us... from the Grey knight post Crusaders 1965

roy hodgson - wayne searles - george grau

Wayne was hit by a car while helping his daughter and son-in-law (Empire Statesmen) move

George was one of the first from that corps to pass - quite a few years ago

Not 100% sure on Roy, but I'm pretty sure he passed a short time ago after spending the last 40 years playing taps for the Legion

Thanks for the background info, Tom. It makes me feel old to know they have all passed. I was starting my first season in the Appleknockers junior corps in the Fall of 1965 when this photo from the Sunday Democrat and Chronicle caught my eye. It was always a source of local pride to know that the national champions were just down the road. The next summer at Aquinas Stadium for the NY/Canadian Championships, I remember playing with Geneva for one of the largest "wall to wall" drum corps crowds in my memory. I am sure that the biggest draw was to see the defending national champions.

I remember seeing them in the spring of 1965 at an indoor show at the War Memorial in Rochester. We all knew there was something really special going on with that corps. I would love to hear that corps live one more time. They were an inspiration to me. I would play that Fleetwood 1965 NYS American Legion Championship record over and over. I still have it, but it's so hard to hear with all of the wear and tear. You were so lucky, Tom Peashey, to be in the right place, at the right time, to be in one of the all time legend drum corps.. That's a great picture Geoff!

Yes indeed... I was very fortunate... '65 was special... I could play every note of the show today without even thinking about it...

Little known fact: the first field contest of the year was in Batavia... following the show, I was driving Dick Hoppe's VW bug home and was run off of I490 in the Town of Gates the week I490 opened by a drunk... I rolled the bug end over end and hit the Howard Rd. Bridge... I missed the second show of the year in Hamilton while I recovered and gained a bad back for the rest of my life... Hop only had some bruised ribs... but the rest of the season was most memorable as was the remains of Hoppe's bug... not much left of it... it did not survive the trip.

The DON is right. ALL pictures are to be submitted to Nanci. SHE is the one who posts the pictures. This is HER thread and she determines what pictures are posted. When you send her a picture give her the background on it. The *Guess Who* Mailbox This is where you send your photos to. Just click on the big black letters, Nanci will do the rest.

This message goes out to "Geneva" and "GOLDE". And Tony (as usual) you should know been.
