Well, the Sabres lost some key players from their '06-'07 roster - that's a big reason they're sitting home right now! Did the Brigs lose key players? And Minnesota? And Connecticut?

It's not about judges' slotting, it's about how the corps could change relative to each other. For Cru to climb 5 spots requires them to become better than 5 more corps. They might be able to do that - but it's doubtful: Cru has never climbed more than 4 spots in one year, doing it twice: '84-'85 (12th-8th) & '92-'93 (8th-4th).

Besides, no one moves up that many spots in DCA anymore. The last time was Bush: '00-'01 (10th-5th). [note: The '03 Cabs only had to climb over 4 corps going from 6th to 1st - the Inspires didn't return in '03.] What are the odds that Brigs, Hurcs, Renegades, CV, and MBI will be worse than Cru all at the same time? Based upon recent history, that's very doubtful too: Cru hasn't beaten Hurcs since Finals '03, Renegades since Finals '02, CV since Finals '02, MBI since Prelims '96, and Brigs since Prelims '95.

There have only been 7 different corps (ignoring the Inspires) to occupy the Top 5 spots during the 2000's: Renegades once (and only 5th place at that), Bush 4 times, MBI 5 times, Cabs 6 times, Brigs 7 times, Bucs 8 times, and ES 8 times. In 40 DCA's, since 1967, Cru has made the Top 5 only 11 times (27%), and and only 5 occurred since 1977 (17%). The last time was 1993 (13 seasons). The odds of Cru joining them this year are diminishingly small.

DCA is not the NFL. DCA competition is not a case of "any given Saturday". George Mason making the NCAA Final 4 doesn't happen in DCA. Appalachian State upsetting Michigan in The Big House doesn't occur in DCA either. After 3 straight years of some very good corps trying their hardest to beat them, the Reading Buccaneers have not lost.

I'm not saying Cru can't make the Top 5, just that the evidence required to believe it right now is not very convincing. Maybe Cru can make some history this season. (THAT would make DCP - not to mention Paetec Park - buzz with anticipation!)

And for the first 30 years or so of their existence, the Bluecoats never cracked the top 5; never beat the Cavaliers; never beat the Blue Devils. But then all of a sudden... Same thing with the Boston Crusaders. Never in DCI history did they ever even make Finals. And then they did. Never cracked the Top 12, but then all of a sudden Top 10 followed by a Top 5. Guess what... it happens.

Then came that night in Centerville last year when they took out BOTH of them!

As Chris Berman would say "That's why they play the games". In the early part of 1988, a lot of folks doubted that Bush would even make finals much less share the title at the end of the season. But just like in sports pre-season prognostication is for fun only and should not be taken too seriously.
